The Midland In Earnest.

The following communication from New Ross to Saturday's Journal said: Dr. Moore of tho Indiana Midland, was in town today, and immediately after dinner drove out west of here, abouttwo miles, to the great rock field. IIo has had some experts examining the rocks for some time and these gentlemon pronounced the field to be the finest limestono field in Indiana. Dr. Moore promises to sec Undeveloped and the Midland will put aside track to tlit field and it is now negotiating for a purchase of a number of acres of land from Daniel Myers overlying tho finest gravel bed in the county."

The Loss Aejusted.

Last Saturday the representatives of tho different insurance companies met in this city and adjusted the loss by fire of the Central school building. After a long discussion tho loss on the building was put at $22,700 and $2,500 ou the furniture. The settlement proved very satisfactory to the trustees who think they can repair the building easily for that amount. The outside walls are undamaged and the work of rebuilding will begin at once in tho hope of having the building ready for occupancy for the fall term. Tho outward appearance of tho now building will be very much the same as the old one although boveral improvements on the inside will be made.

An Extension of Tine In the Pettit Case. The Supreme Court has granted an extension of time in tho Pettit case. The defense last week asked and was granted a three montliB extension dating from March 30 in which to file their brief and to even things up the State was also granted three months to file anything new that might turn up. This throws the case until the last of October pending which Pettit will continue to bottom chairs and cultivate his luxuriant mustache.
