Makes the Weak Strong
Tho marked benefit which people la rat down or weakened state ol health derive from Hood's Sarsaparilla, conclusively prom the *'al™ that this medicine makes the weak strong." It does not act like a stimulant, Imparting fictitious strength from which there must follow a reaction of greater weakness tfrnn before, but In the moBt natural way Hood's Sarsaparilla overcomes that tired feeling, crcates an appetite, purifies the blood, and, In short, gives great bodily, serve, mental and digestive strength.
Fagged Out
"Last spring I was completely fagged out. My strength left me and I felt sick and miserable all the time, so that I could hardly attend to my business. I took one bottle of Hood's Sarsaparilla, and it cured me." There is nothing like it." K. C. BBQOLK, Bdltor Enterprise, Belleville, Mich. "I derived very much benefit from Hood's Sarsaparilla, which I took for general debility. It built me right up, and gave me an excellentappetitc." ED. JENKINS,Mt.Savage,Md.

HANNIBAi PUESEL,
Was a Unique Character of Former Days in Orawfordsville. One bf the most noted characters that lived in Orawfordsville up to the close of the war, was Hannibal Purael. None of the younger generation now living here remember him, but hundreds of the older citizens of both town and country have a vivid remembrance of him, and the mention of his name will provoke a smile and start many a tongue to recounting the oddities and eccentricities so peculiar to

fitly illustrated tho words of Shakespeare, that "a man in

many parts," as in his time while living here ho was a merchant, showman, hotel proprietor, farmer, and what else can not now be recalled. His characteristics wore mixed with much energy, business ability, determination, and plenty of personal courage.
Pursel came here in an early day from Ohio, He married a Bister of Elder Mathias Vancleave, as his first wife. He understood human naturo and was able to profit by it in many of

Ventures. He could Bwear very energetically if business did not go on to suit him, and was ready to enforce with his fists any argumont that could not be combatted in any other way. On the west side of Washington street at the corner of Market, is a two story brick building that was once four stories. Pursel built this and kept a hotel, known .min I as the "Pursel House," therein. It was built poorly with much inferior mate

Taylor, who kept a three-story frame hotel where Campbell Brothers dry goods store now is. Taylor was fully of as iirey a temperament as Pursel, and their quarrels, slanders, and ridicule of each other kept the town in excitement about halt tho time. A traveling man, getting off the train, was at once beseiged by the runners of those rival houses. Tho runner for one house for instance would quietly inform him that a man had died with tho small-pox yesterday at that other house, and ho certainly would not want to "put up" there. The other runner, equally cocked and primed, would tell him the grub was not fit to eat there and there was danger of the house falling down, etc., until the traveling man would be thankful to escape from the town with his life. Truce was finally declared between the rival landlords, although Hannibal held his own until the last. At one time Pursel a museum on Washington street, and snakes, stuffed aligators, monkeys, etc., were plentiful. The museum drew many school children and country people to see it, and occasionally the proprietor would appear in the role of lec turer and describo the habits of the ravinous "animals" on exhibition when in their wild state, although numbers of his animals had been manufactured to order here in Orawfordsville. At one time Hannibal had a "Grand Gift Distribution," in which a fabulous amount of "jewely" was given away for tho small sum of 50 cents from each purchaser of a ticket. The prizes, numbering twenty or more, were placed in a circle of a ta bio top, and a pointed spear, which af ter being started to revolve around would soon stop, and tho point of it in dicato which prize the man paying the 50 cents could have. There was gener ally one really good prize out of the twenty, and it was noticed that the spear point never came close enough to claim it. Business was good for along time until tho public "got onto" it, when it stopped. He also ran a book store for a number of years on Main streot, and did a thriving business. One day Prof.
Hovey, of Wabash college, a pious, sedate, and God-fearing man as lived, stepped into the book store. In looking over a finely-bound, gilt-edged Bible, ho held it in front of Pursel, remarking on its beautiful appearance. To this Pursel remarked, "It's a damn fine Bible, you bet." This unexpected blast of profanity caused the immediate disappearance from the store of the professor without further inspection of Bibles. At one time Pursel is said to have traveled with a circus, going as auctioneer to sell jewelry, razors, etc., and also to have acted as clown for the establishment for a short season. From his general versatility to adapt himself to almost all business pursuits, he may have been the funny man for a circus and a good oue, too.
He was also a great swimmer, and is reported to have swum, at one time, the entire distance from Logansport to Delphi in the Wabash river, which in length is twenty miles at least.
Through all tho vicissitudes passed, the energy displayed, the number of callings followed, most people might, of course, expect Pursel long since to have worn} out and passed away from this world of sin and sorrow, but he has not. Hannibal Pursel is yet living, hale and hearty, and at this time is engaged in keeping a boarding house at Loeansport. Although 81 years old, ho has yet much vitality and energy being but 60 miles away from his former home, he has not visited hero in many long years. His old friends trust ho will call down soon and appear once more among them, as they would warmly welcome him to old familiar scenes.

MR. EDITOR:— The Catholic priests of this country are waging a bitter war on our publicschools. Occasionally one of these clergymen, more zealous than the others, gives vent to his malignity. Rev. Father McCanna, of Joliet, 111., preached a sermon, not long ago, in which he declared that if parents sent their children to the free schools they would be "eternally damned." Said he: "The American public school system is immoral, unjuBt, and unconstitutional, and tho result of education in those schools is paupers, lunatics and criminals. You might as well send your children to the jails and penitentiaries at once, as education in the public school ends there,"

tics Bhow that the greater number of our criminals had their early training in Catholic Bchools. A greater number of the inmates of prisons, poor houses and asylums have been turned out of parochial schools. How many temperance Catholics are there in this city? Where did that young hoodlum, who spends a good portion of his time behind the
barB,
and who recently robbed a man in "growler" alley, get his education? Of course I do not claim that the majority of Catholics are criminals, but a great many of the criminals are invriably Catholics.) The members of the Clana Gael, tbe Mafia, the Mollie McGuires, and other cut-throat societies, received instruction in Catholicism it is deeplyrooted in them. The mid-night assassin of Sicily, clutching his victim by tho throat, knows ho will be forgiven. The good priest will pardon him, while the application of a little holy water will purify him. That is the way he has been taught. Tho Catholic church is working to regain her lost power. She docs not want her children to attend our schools for fear they would'get in the habit of thinking for themselves and become free. Catholicism hopes to be strong enough somo day to rule the
United States. Protestants should awaken to a sense of the danger that threatens our free land. "Eternal vigilance is tho price of liberty."

Mr, Byrd on His Ear.
Last Saturday tho democrats of Brazil township, Clay county, met in mass convention for the purpose of selecting delegates to the various conventions, That Mr. Brookshiro has some very ardent supporters down in old Clay, and that Mr. Byrd was unable to have his township instruct for him, will be seen below:
The next delegates to be electcd were for the congressional convention and was hotly contested for by the friends ofG.A. Byrd and E. V. Brookshiro were out in full force. J. L. Sullivan, George II. Schultz, Charles E. Matson, Moses Rodenbarger, Wm. Lynch and Robert Neal were nominated with tho fellowing result: Sullivan, 91 Shult, 92 C. E. Matson, 89 M. Eodenbsirger, 122 Wm. Ljncli, 120 Robert Neal, 121, resulting in the election of Rodenbarger, Lynch and Neal. As soon as the result was known, Senator Byrd arose and stated to the convention that he would not bo a candidate before the convention for congress and was becoming a little warm when Chairman Wilson called him to order.'"—Brazil Times.
The three delegates selected are staunch Brookshiro men and will refuse to go into the convention instructed for Mr. Byrd or any other candidate but Brookshire. Whether or not Mr. Byrd, after more deliberation, has retracted the statement made in the heat of the fray to the effect that he will not allow his name to go before tho convention wo
