A CANDIDATE BUT NOT THROUGH HILL'S PLAN. Ex-President Cleveland has written a letter to Gen. Bragg, of Wisconsin relating to his candidacy for the office. He does not in it avow his candidacy, but intimates that he would be such if selected. His plan is different from Hill's. He is not seeking the position, and is not allowing his fiiends to fix up conventions in his interest. Delegates so far as be is concerned are unpledged, and are free to vote for whom they may desire. Below is an an extract from his letter:'
I have an idea that tho presidency is preeminently tho people's office, and I have been sincere in my constant advocacy of the effective participation in political affairB on tho part of all our citizens. Consequently, I believe the people should be heard in the choice of their party candidates taat ihey themselves should and make nominations as is consistent with open, fair and full party organization and methods.
I speak of theso things solely for tho purpose of advising you that my conception of the nature of the presidential office and my conviction that the voters of our party should be free in the selection of their candidates preclude the possibility of my leading and pushing a self-seeking canvass for the presidential nomination, even if I had a desire to bo again a candidate.
Believing that the complete supremacy of democratic principles means national prospent} and the increased happiness of our people, I am earnestly anxious for tho success of the party. I am confident success is still within our reach, but I believe this a time for democratic thoughtfulness and deliberation, not only as to candidates, but concerning party action upon questions of immense interest to the patriotic and intelligent voters of the land, who"watch for an' assuranco of safety as the price of their confidence and support. Yours very truly,
GROVKU CLEVELAND.
MUST STAMP THE SQUAEE. The supremo court Thursday decided some important points in regard to the Australian election law. It says a ballot must be stamped within the squares printed upon its face. OtherwiBO it is not to bo counted. The initials of election clerks must bo written on the back of the ballots so as to bo plainly seen, but tho law is not mandatory as to whether tho initials shall bo in tho lower left-hand corner or some other place. When the ballots are placed in the wrong box prima l'acie they should be counted, as it is presumed they wero placed there by mistake of tho election officers.
THE GERRYMANDER BUSINESS. One of the meanest features of political warfare is the gerrymander business which haB become a favorite weapon with both parties during the past twenty years. 11 practically disfranchises whichever sido is in tho minority in the selection of Congressmen and Legislators. It first, if we remember correctly, was used in this state by the republicans at the suggestion of Oliver P. Morton who was at the time-in the zenith of his power. The State was so re-district-ed that hardly a democratic Congressman could be electod. But it was a boomerang which injured the party more than had been dreamed and in a few short years the most of the districts of tho state became democratic, "fhe Ohio legislature which is republican and the Missouri legislature which is democratic, are both this year using the gerrymander to perpetuate power, but it' will rue it. The people like fair play, a fair deal all round, and in those States will soon speak out in unmistakable tones against such unfair work. The honorable, fair and durable plan, and the only way, to defeat opponents is by argument and open work. Any law that permits a political opponent to take advantage of any adversary through disreputable means is unjuBt and is always condemned by the honest Titers regardless of which party they may be attached.
IN regard to tho bichloride of gold cure for the drinking habit a noted physician says that preparations of gold are all poisonous, and their use as a remedial agent is all fudge. He further remarks: "So far as I can learn, and I have access to the leading medical journals of England, France, Germany and the United States, there is no remedy yet discovered that is tincture of eolden seal and tincture of Peruvian bark, equal parts—and take a teaspoonful in a tumbler of cold water three to four times per day, or at any time the desire comes on to drink liquor. This has cured hundreds of bad cases where there was some will power left. It does not eradicate the desire whether you want it done or not, but will effectually take away the desire to drink at the time, if you havo nerve enough to take it just when you want a drink. It is a powerful tonic and safe to take almost any time. The fluid extract is the best
The way to use this remedy is to get a pint of it. and then fill a two-ounce bottle and put it in your pocket, so that you can have the antidote on hand when the desire to drink seizes you."
THE new election law exacts purity on the part of candidates for office, and men aspiring for positions should be familiar with its provisions. The law provides that any person being a candidate for nomination to any office of profit or trust under the constitution or laws of this state or of the United States, before any convention held by any political party, or any primary election, who loans pays or gives, or promises to loan, pay, or give any money or other thing of value to any delegate or elector, or any other person for the purpose of securing the vote or influence of such delegate, elector or person for his nomination, and whoever hires or other wise employee for consideration any person to work for the nomi nation of any person to any office, or to work for the selection of any delegate to bo chosen at any party convention or primary election, shall, upon conviction thereof be fined in any sum not more than five hundred dollars, and disfranchised and rendered incapable of holding any office of profit or trust within this state for any determinate period, and if nominated shall be ineligible to hold such office.
OBJECTIONS TO THE TAX LAW. Attorney-General Smith says it is evident that the corporations in Indiana intend to break down the new tax law if money and the best legal talent can do it. "It is somewhat remarkable," said he, "that tho politicians are preparing to try to make tho people believe that the poor man and the man of moderate, means are being robbed by the tax-law. Now, I havo given a good deal of attention to the operation of the tax law, and so far I have not heard of the men of moderate means raising any objections to the law. Tho enemies of the law say it is burdensome to tho poor man and the farmer, and yet wo find the corporations of tl\p State constantly holding conferences here in Indianapolis, trying to devise plans to break down tho law. As a matter of fact, it is tho corporations that are objccing the peoplo are not complaining of the law. And I want to say that if. tho corporations combine to down the law, tho next Legislature will make it mighty interesting for them."
Nkvek was a machine more thoroughly oiled and free from frction than the Harrison political machino. It was in thorough preparation everywhere for chosing Harrison delegates to tho Indianapolis convention, and is manfestated by post masters, revenue collectors, postal clerks, and those drawing money from the government. Tho republican that dares raise his hand against them is run out, cryed down and abused. It is very little free speech in a republican convention now unless the speech is for Harrison.
JOHN L. SULLIVAN says he will hold as responsible those editors who are unfriendly in their illusions to him. Let him begin on the campaign liers first.
BBOOKSHIBE'S SPEE0H. The speech of Congressman Brookshire in the house last week would appear to have been well recoived and gained for him much praise. It related to the important question of tariff upon which Mr, B. has devoted much study and attention. He is well posted upon the question.
Representative Culberson, chairman of the judiciary committee of the house, complimented Mr. Brookshire's speech highly. He said that it would make a splendid campaign document for the democrats.
Representative Patterson(Tenn.) says: "I regard Mr. Brookshire's speech aB a very valuable contribution to the fund of political information. It exposes in a masterly manner the barrenness of the reciprocity scheme and I regard its delivery as one of the noteworthy events of the session."
Representative Bailey (Tex.) was greatly pleased with the speech and socured a large number of copies to send to friends in Texas.
CONFIRMED.
Judge Woods who sat in judgement in the Sim Coy trial at Indianapolis had his nomination for U. S. Circuit Judge confirmed last week in the U. S. Senate by the bare majoriety of 1. The other candidates received a majority of 8. According to this he is an eight part of a judge in fitness, which iB about the proportion with which he should be be measured. Unless he has the hide of a rhinocerous he must feel humiliated at this balloting of his name with others who were confirmed. It indicates the feeling pretty clearly in which his action while a' district judge is held. It is probable that he would have been defeated had not some of the Senators have feared the deadly influence of the administration. Ho came of the contest with anything than flving colors, and must really feel deeply humilated over tho entire proceedings.
JOHN E. LAMB cannot havo it all his own way in Vigo county. There are many democrats down there that despise the man and his methods. His efforts to control the political machine will fail, as witness the following whereas and resolution passed at a convention held at Terre Haute a few days ago:
WHEREAS. Through a snap call for primaries, false promises and representations to honest democrats at these primaries, by deceiving, browbeating and bulldozing delegates chosen by different wards and townships and instructed to vote for Cleveland delegates, the selfconstituted leaders have succeeded in thwarting the choice, will and judgement of the democratic party in this county and,
RESOLVED, That we hero and now place our seal of condemnation upon this political rape of Vigo county, denouncing the means as undemocratic
THE Homestead Steel Works of Pittsburg of whichCarnegie, the especial friend of LJiaine and Protection, is owner has lalely discharged over 400 of their employes in order to "retrench" and cut off expenses. This in another indication that the McKinloy law failed to make more labor and better times for tho working men. Carnegie has made an enormous fortune through protection while his workmen have not been benefitted.
A hill has passed tho Senate providing for the construction of post office building in all towns whore the postal business has amounted to as much as 89,000 annually for the past three years. This would include most of the county seats of Indiana and the scramble for opportunity to swindle the government in the price of real' estate on which theso buildings are to bo erected wil) commence no doubt as soon as the thing i6 settled.
AN English critic says of Hen Ilur that the book is "intolerably dull, prosey, and. not to put too fine a point on it, silly." If Shakespeare should havo happened to be born on this sido of the Atlantic the average^ Englishman would have said of tho great dramatist and his works, that "the Yankees cawnt produce any poets, you know they haven't got the English scenery, you know."
Tiie peoples' and democratic party havo united on their state tickets in Kansas this year. This may win and it may not. There aro always largo numbers of voters in all parties who aro disgusted with fusion, and will either not vote at all or go over to tho party that has no fusion in it. If through this move the republicans elect their State ticket it should caus no surprise, y-.
No ciKXEKAL organization of the party has yet been put under way in tho county, and we would suggest that the timo to begin is here. Clubs should bo organized ui every township, good wholesome anti-tariff literature circulated and greater interest exhibited in political matters. Delays of this kind aro too often felt in the fall elections.
A FOOLISH report was in circulation last week that Harrison would withdraw his name as a candidate for President at tho Minneapolis convention. The originator of this forgot that republicans decline no offices if there is ever any boodle in sight.
