DEMOCRATIC MASS CONVENTION.
The democrats of Montgomery coun
ty, Indiana, will meet in mass conven
tion at the city of Crawfordsville, Ind.,
on Saturday, April 2,1892, at 10 o'clock a. m., for the purpose of selecting delegates to the following conventions, towit: Congressional, Senatorial and Joint
Legislature. Every democrat of the county is earnestly requested to be pres.
ent and assist in making these selec
tions. WILL II. JOHNSTON, A. T. THOMPSON, Chairman. Secretary.
"WHAT SHALL WE FIGHT FOE? In his address Saturday night before the Reform Club in New York, Senator Vilas said: "We want no platform for the sake of words we do not care to formulate a policy merely to win an election to execute a wise policy."
If tho Democratic party is to bo marshaled to victory in November it must clearly understand the meaning of victory. Tnere must bo no misconception, no lingering doubt anywhere concerning party policy ancl party purposes.
Senator Vilas says truly we want to win that we may execute a wise policy. The McKinly bill has been the source of woes innumerable to this people. Mr. Breckinridge clearly points out tho fact that
but for exceptional conditions at home and abroad the year just closed would have been ouo of almost universal bankruptcy.
That bill and the whole system of taxation back of it is a menace to national prosperity and progress.
It is not sufficient to repeal it and go back to the iniquitous act of 18S3. The Democratic party would not do that if it could it.could not do it if it would.
It must reconstruct tho whole system of tariff taxation, so as to increaso revenue while we relievo the people of many of the McKinley burdens.
That is the policy which we wish to execute, and for such an opportunity wo can fight vigorously. That purpose and that policy must be declared alike in the candidate. Any wavering, any faltering, any hestitalion, any evidence of treachery anywhere would prove disastrous.
Down with the robber tariff.
ONE TERM ENOUGH.
A very satisfactory way to dispose to great extent of the wrangle over presidental nominations is the adoption of an amendment to the constitution prohibiting any incumbent of the presidential chair from holding it for more than one term. There has been no occupant of tho position from tho formation of the government that we can now recall but what always desired a second term. Thoy aro ambitious and conceited most times and want the office as lontr as possible, even Grant was willing to occupj it twelve years, eight not being enough, if ho could have secured tho nomination. To do away with all schemings for the place, lot the law read one term only and no moro. The country is ffSvor
so
short in brains but what a now occupant can be safely installed every four
years.
NOT FOR HILL.
The Cincinnati Enquirer is emphatically for Hill for President, and every day has columns of matter devotod to his candidacy. Of course the Enquirer in this simply voices its own sentiment, and while we are free to say that wo do not believe Cleveland can carry New York if nominated, wo do not believe Hill could carry Indiana and other doubtful states. The plain fact which should be not forgotton at the outset by the convention is that New V'ork is not in it this year for the nomination, and that a western man must be selected or we will fail. All the schemes big and little that may bo fixed up in Hill's interest will not win, and the Enquirer will mould a very temporary interest in his favor. The west does not want him, has little confidence in him spite of tho Enquirer's efforts in his favor.
STITFCONVENTION
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Feb. 9,1892. To the Democracy of Indiana: The Democratic State Convention will assemble at Tomlinson Hall, in tho city of Indianapolis, at 10 o'clock a. m., on Thurday, April 21, 1892.
The Convention is called for tho purpose of nominating candidates for state offices, to bo voted for at the November election, 1892 the adoptiou of aplatrorm the selection of delegates to the National Democratic Convention the selection of Presidential electors, and such other business as may properly come before the Convention.
It will consist of 1,303 delegates, which are apportioned among the counties on the basis of one delegate for each 200, and for each fraction over 100 votes cast for Grover Cleveland for President atthe election of 18S8.
POLITICAL prejudice and party bias is strong, even among tho CJ. S. senators. In all reason, justice and sound sense Woods should not be confirmed for U. S. Circuit Judge. His record has been opened for their inspection in tho Dudley case, his partizan malignity fully shown, and his thorough unfitness for the high position fully exhibited, yet all the same ho will, we believe, be confirmed. The republican senators aro very sensitive about having the ill-will of Harrison, and though some of them may be termed statesmen, they aro as narrow and timid in their conduct in matters of this kind as it is possible to be.
HUNDREDS of copies of tho New York Tribune, marked paid until next November, are being sent to democrats all over this county. It is the work of the republican national committee and indicates that they are already alive to the importance of the coming campaign. Democratic Central Committees could pursue a similar plan with excellent results. If there are democrats or republicans unable to pay for a paper make up a fund and send it to them. One hundred dollars spent this way is worth more than a half dozen campaign orators and their accompanying brass bands.
IN polititical sagacity ex-Gov. Gray has proven himself among the best of the country, fully equal to Gov. Hill, if he does not live in as large a state, and since there is no probability of New York harmonizing over Cleveland and Hill the national convention could make no more judicious move than to nominate Gray. With Gray as the nominee for president and Gov. Flower, of New York, for vice-president no better ticket could be placed in the field. If the west could center on this ticket it will bo elected in November.
THE wifo of James G. Blaine, jr., has secured a divorce after a long siege in the court at Deadwood, North Dakota. Sko has by the decree of the court the custody of tho child and is given an alimony of 81,000 and £100 per month. Tho alimony will amount to nothing at present, as her husband has no property. Tho trouble originated.from too much mother-in-law on tho young man's sido of the house, and their treatment of tho woman has been anything but creditable on the part of the "Plumed Knight" and his family.
RI0H SILVER STRIKE.
From reports from some silver mining districts of Colorado it would seem that there would be no lack of silver to coin if a free coinage bill is passed by congress. Last week at Florissant, Colorado, a wonderful strike of silvor was made. A blast in tho tunnel opened a body of silver glance twenty-six inches in thickness. The ore comes out in massive chunks weighing as high as 300 pounds. The entire matter is almost solid ore. Mr. Guyot, tho assayer, says it is the finest silver ore lie has seen in years.
NEWSP.U'KRS containing marked arti cles highly eulogistic of this or that candidate for some state office, which they desire published, and almost always ending up with the expression. "The convention can make no mistake, etc.," aro received almost daily at this office. Tho thing has become decidedly monotinous, and no attention is paid them. Candidates for state offices who wish to place themselves before the poople, Bhould pursue the same course as county candidates—pay for their announcements,
A DISEASE known as Typus, a severe grade of fever, has broken out in the east, a large number of cases being reported. It ia rare in this country and is brought over by many ot^the emigrants from Russia,'Poland and other European countries. It looks like the emigration business should bo called to a halt. We have enough of the scum of Europe now to last for a century in tho way of paupers, anarchists and worthless people in general, and a limit to it should at once be instituted.
As a solution of the much discussed question, whether tho world's fair should be opened on Sunday or not, Rev. De Witt Talmage suggests that religious services be held in the fair buildings of Sundays, to which everybody should be invited. This would bo like the pious man who would not visit the wicked circus, but simply went alone to lot the children 6ee the wild animals of the show.
NOTWITHSTANING his letter saying hiB name would not be presented as a candidate for president the friends of Blaine in Chicago (tho Blaine club) are determined to present his name at the Min neapolis convention. This indicates that they have little faith in Harrison's strength before tho people, and there is a good foundation for this. Blaine is strong with his party everywhere, while Harrison is not.
THE emuto between tho friends of Williams and Dice, those two good republicans, and which cauie near resulting iu a fight last week is nothing more than tho old Ramsey vs. Pierce fight continued under different individuals. 'Tis sweet to have the brethren dwell togother in harmony, and yet it don't look like much prospect of harmony very soon. Too bad!too bad!
HILL had all the New York delegates at the State convention at Albany this week but ten. He and his lieutenants had tho thing all niceh "it and driod," and did about as tin v,.se. He may propose but other state? nay dispose. The New York gang can be relied upon to defeat the ticket November if possible.
A NEW paper, the Greencastle Democrat, was issued for the first time last week in that city. It. is neat und newsy, and its proprietors say has come to stay. It may be "a long Celt want," but as the Star-Press, a democratic paper, has been occupying tho field 'or many years, tho "want" to an outsider is not very per. ceptible.
AMONG tho petitions reported and referred by the senato last week was ono by Mr. Voorhees from the citizens of Veedersburg, Ind., asking that tho I'inkerton detective force be suppressed by law or else that it be incoporated in tho military force of the country.
It is too bad to rend the G. O. P. assunder, yet Brush, Dice et. al. YS. Williams et. al. seem determined to do it. It all results over whom shall bo delegate to the Minneapolis convention, but at this writing it looks like tho Williams gang was ahead.
A HIGH tariff upon woolen goods is a boon to the shoddy industry. It enables the manufacturer of shoddy goods to sell his worthless stuff at a price which good woolen goods ought to be sold at.
THE American workinginan ought to realize by this time that the McKinleyites have been lying- to him al! along. Where is the prosperity big wages, wellfilled dinner pails, and plenty of work?
IF a twentieth of all tho tin plate mills "projected" in this country becomes a "condition" (an actual reality), thero will be an "over-production"of tin. But thero isn't a particle of danger.
FAKMKRS sell their grain in Livorpool in competition with all the world. Let, them have tho privilege of buying where they can buy the cheapest.
THE best possible protection the Americans can have is the right to buy and sell where they choose, without restriction.
