WISE WOKDS FKOJSI CLEVELAND. When ex-president Cleveland addresses any assembly ho alwayr ~'..ys much that is sensible, timely and beneficial on political matters. At a Jackson festival in New York, January 8th, among many things he said: "We cannot trifle with our obligations to the people without exposure and disaster. We ourselves have aroused a spirit of jealous inquiry and discrimination touching political conduct which cannot be blinded and the people will visit with quick revenge the party which betrayB them,

I hope, thon, I may venture to claim in this assemblage that, even if there had been but slight encouragement for the cause we have espoused, there would still be r.o justification for timidity and fainthbarthodneBS. But with the success we have already achieved, amounting to a political revolution, it seems to me that it would be the height of folly, considered purely as a question of party management, to relax in the least our determination and persistency.

If we suspect anywhere in our counsels comproming hesitation or a disposition to divert the unity of party e£forts let us be watchful. The least retrd&i bodes disaster cowardice is often called conservatism, and an army scattered into sections invites defeat. We have preached and taught the doctrine that honesty and sincerity should be exacted from political parties. Let us not fall under condemnation which waits on shifty schemes and insince professions.

I believe over countrymen are prepared to act on principle and are in no mood for political maneuvering. They will not waste time in conundrums, guessing riddli., trying to interpret doubtful phrases. They demand a plain and and simple statemont of political ^purpose. Above all things, political fitness should not lead us to forget that at the end of our plans we must meet face to face at the polls the voters of the laud with ballots in their hands demanding, as a condition of their support of our party, fidelity ancl undi. vided devotion to the cause in which we have enlisted them. If inspired by the true Jacksopian spirit we hold to the doctrine that party honesty is party duty and party courage is party expediency, we shall win a sqre and lasting success through the deserved support of a dis criminating, intellegent and thoughtful people.

THE TRUE RING.

The lion "sty, economy and soundness of Mr. Ho)' an of this State is shown in in the fo'. wing resolution introduced by him in the House of Representatives last week, and which after some feeble opposition from the republicans side passed by a good majority:

RESOI.VKD, that in the judgement of this House, the granting of subsidies or bounties by Congress, in money, public lands, bonds, or by endorsement, or by pledge of the public credit, to promote special private industries or enterprises of corporations independent of the question of the constitutional power of Con gross to make such grants, is unjust and impolitic and in manifest conflict with the spirit of our Republican institutions, as it directly tends to create and foster the wealth of favored classes at the expense of the whole people, who bear the burdens of Government, and manifestly furnishes undue facilities for the enlargement of great private estate, a policy which a Government of tho people cannot justly or safely encourage by any form of favoritism in legislation.

It can safely be asserted that this present congress will not be a "Billion Dollars" one. The democrats are in control of tho House, and no "bounties," and appropriations to this or that scheme will bo granted. Let us pay debts, not contract them. We have been since 18G5 reducing the debt, a quarter of a century, and yet we owe at this time $1,500,000,000. and when we will have it wiped out completely the Lord only knows. We may bo a"great and prosper ous nation" and all that, but wo have a very limited opinion of any n's wealth !,1 property when we tinea hi in mo ji-d all over. A nation's business should be managed the same as any shrew 1 financier manages his whcnovai possible. The resolution of Holeman'o tends to put a curl) on tho extravagance and waste of money that has too often seen and realized. It may work disasteriously on the loocheswho haveoxpected to fatten off of tho government through appropriations for this or that object but it will'bo all right for tho peoph^.

NATI'UAL gas beats a railroad often when it comes to killing off people. Last week by an explosion in a house at Anderson eight persons were injured. A match was lighted in ihe house to find wliero 'the gas was es -aping, and the explosion took place at once with tho result above stated., ZSViurai c?as is anew thing in Ciawfordsullr Ve are not yet thoroughly fannnar with its antics, but we will learn, if not caroful, all about it soon.

EXAGGERATED WEALTH

It is remarkablehow the fortunesof alleged millionaires drop down after ail administrator is appointed for tho estate aud the appraiser gets to work. A few days ago when Carson, a former president of the Monon died, it was announced that he loft an estate of over a million dollars. Tho administrator announces it as worth about 8500,000 Cooper, the owner of the Forepaugh show died early in this month at Philadolphi and as is the general custom ho. was pronounced a millionaire. His widow was last'week appointed administratrix of the estate "valued at $275,000." There seems to be a positive delight with many to over rate and exaggerate the wealth of most persons who have accumulated fortunes. Even the fortunos of Gould, Vauderbilt and many others are, no doubt, greately over done in figures. We have seen the fortune of Phil. Armour, the great meat man of Chicago, pu^ down at $50,000,000. Now it is greatly to bo doubted if there is any man in Chicago possessed of one-half that sum, but as long as it tickles the fancy of re. porters to deal in such high figures. Mr. Armour will not object. Hon. W. H, English, of Indianapolis, is another victim of high figures, his wealth at times, (depending, of course, on the reporters figures,) being placed aB high as $4,000,000. We very much doubt if there is a man in Indiana worth one-half that sum in hard spot cash or its equivalent. Persons making these estimates do not seem to realize that a million dollars is an immense pilvMof wealth, and that such millionairtWire scarce, very scarce.

THE SUGAR BOUNTY.

There does not seem a moro unjust feature in all the McKinley law than that which pays a bounty of so much per pound to the producers o? sugar, and the few of comparative large number of agriculturists of this country who are able to engage in it will soon under favorable climate acquire a fortune, and all of which comes off the tax-payers of the country. Is sugar a more important production in this country than many others not fostered by the government? Why not a bounty to tho producer of corn, wheat, cotton, and other articles entering into doni' ^tic use? Does the man raising whe -.i receive any bounty for each bushel he raises? Not at all.

His profit from it whatever it may be is regulated by the market price, and the government pays no attention to his gain or loss. The surgar producers are paid by thi) Government a bounty. But who is the Government but the people, and they pay the sugar bounty. This is class legislation. It is in the interest of those only who can raise sugar. Why not make it general and give the wheat and corn raiseis a bounty too? There is no logic or equity in such legislation as this sugar bounty business.

SHOULD BE AT HIS POST. It is the duly of some statesman or widely circulated newspaper to explain by what right a member of congress or of the legislature has to be away from his post of duty at any time unless from bodily affliction of himself or immediate family. They are paid so much per year or diem for their services and it is a bounden duty to be on hand. In assumiug the duty they bind themselves to this, and no private consideration should keep them away. They owo it to the people. While Congress is in session we observe Senator Voorhees is away attending to a law suit at Terre Haute. By what authority is he practicing law and at the same time drawing over 814 per day as a member of Congress, and especially while it is in session? He is setting a very bad example in the way of "reform" in attending to matters aside from his office, although not the first Senator to act thus. It has been the custom for years for many members, republicans and democrats alike, to absent themselves for this or that season. But they do wrong. They are transgressing their duties in doing so, and the most reasonable plan to prevont it would be to deduct the pay for each day of absence.

Resolved by this convention. That its delegates, here nominated, bo requested, in deference to that universal sentiment, to cast their vote in the National Convention for that peerless statesman and foremost republican."

CHAIRMAN OF STATE CENTRAL COMMITTEE. Mr. Thomas Taggart, Auditor of Marion county, was last week at a meetof the State Central Committee appointedits Chairman. The apppointmont seems to have been a very judicious one and will command general approval from the party through the state. Mr. T. has been in control of the party management in Marion county and his work is shown by his success—both county and city democratic—and that too at the home of His Excellency President Harrison. Taggart is an Irishman and is therefore at home in politics as is every member of that impetuous race. An Irishman out of politics is like a fish out of water —he is lost until he gets in again. Taggart understands the ins and outs of politics is full of resources in a political fight, and it is questionable if a better selection could have been made. Nothing like a good start in the fight and tho State Central Committee have made that kind.

INGERSOLL'S INFIDELITY. It would seem decidedly unjust that a man's religious views or rather nonreligious views should injure him with any political party. Yet because he is an infidel, has opinions and fearlessly proclaims them regarding the Bible, Bob. Ingersoll is never selected any more by the republican national committee as a campaign orator. The committeo fears that he hurts tho party on account of his infidel-ideas, and that thousand of orthodox and extra pious republicans would be drawn from tho support of tho ticket if Ingersoll talks in favor of it. Although the most eloquent orator now li-' ng of the republican party, Ingorsr services are not sought for by tv committee, and probacy never wil1 again. They fear his infidelity moro than the*-- esteem his eloquence.

DISCIPLINE HEEDED.

It stands the officials of the Monon railway in hand to take right hold of this property and inaugurate a policy that will provent so many wreaks and disasters on that line. It can bo done, and determined executive management Vdl do it. Through the increased number of these disasters travel is turned from that line. Many fear to go'over it, not knowing what may overtake them before their journey is completed. This should not be. The road has been doing a fine freight aud passenger business for some time, but incompetent or careless management will cause the loss of much of this hereafter if a vigorous and thorough business discipline from section men clear through to the highest officials is not at once inaugurated.

ABAi'ETIDA PILL FOR THE GRIP. Dr. Keeleyr originator of the cure for drunkeness, writes last week to a gentleman at L.uisville of a ven simple cure for the grip. He says: "I would like to fiuggest a treatment for the grip which know is nearly specific as well as innocent. It is simply nsafetida, given in four-grain pills, one pill four times a day. No man need be sick of the grip these days who will take it. For the past two years, with all the patients here subject, of course, to such epidemic, I have not had one man to go to bed from the disease. 1 break it up very quickly, and, in fact, cure it. If this treatment was genorally known it would save many sufferers much expense and wretchedness and many useful and valuable lives."

STATE CONVENTION.

The State Democratic Convention to nominate a state ticket and establish a platform of principles will convene at Indianapolis on Thursday, April 14th. It has been decided that an early convention is preferable and thereforo this date is determined upon. County conventions to select delegates to district and State conventions will be held very generally through the State in March.

IT is an outrage on the judiciary to have such a narrow contracted individual as Woods selected as a Judge yet it would appear from present indications the thing cannot bo avoided. Fear of the ill will of the adminiotration and a desire not to bo considered disloyal to the republican party, will drive many Senators into voting for him, repugnant as the act may bo.
