Labor day, and any general national or suite election day. The legal phase of the answer is justified by the following decision of the supreme court of Michigan: "Reeog' nized holidays cannot be deducted from the time for which a schoolteacher contracts to teach and his pay reduced accordingly, lie is entitled to pay for such days even though he does not teach."

Phonographs for Mutes.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Dec. 14.—Superintendent Johnson, of the Indiana institute for the deaf and dutiil). has been using the phonograph experimentally in teaching mutes. His experiments were prompted by those of Dr. II. F. Yarey. of Baltimore. Superintendent .lohnson said that he found the phonograph concentrates sound at the drum of the ear in such it way that many ullliiAed with deafness can hear. lie intends to carry the experiments further, and he thinks the instrument may become a means of teaching the use of the voice to some mutes whose inability to speak is due to the fact that they have never heard speech. He tried the phonograph with twenty-seven boys and twenty-nine girls. Of these only three girls were unable to hear anything at all. Twenty boys and twenty girls could hear instrumental music, while eleven boys and fifteen girls could distinguish spoken words. Of the lifty-six whose hearing was thus tested eight could hear best with the left ear and fourteen with the right, while eleven heard alike in both cars. Other facts similar to these will be determined, and Mr. Johnson will also compare notes on the causes of the deafness with the results of the phonograph experiments.
