Fred Bandel has been granted the contract for boulovarding "Wabash Avenue. His bid was 92 cjnts per foot, making a total of $3,8G5 for the whole work. The work is to bo finished within 00 days. Mr. Bandel's bid was 91,000 lower that his nearest competitor.
Said a very prominent republican school teacher this week: "1 think it a wise idea for each of us teachers to hoist a flag on our school houses and then hire some boy to tear it down anil trample it in the dust. It's the greatest 'snap' for cheap notoriety I know of."'

Parties who came down this week from Michigan City state that Warden French's new privilege permitting convicts to grow mustaches is working quito a revolution in the appearance of the eight hundred prisoners gathered there, and that the variety of the appearance of the various hirsute growths is almost amusing. Nearly all the prisoners have taken advantage of the privilege, and prisoner Pettit is said to have regained his former handsome appearance.

Death of Mrs. Rebecca DePew. Mrs. Rebecca DePew died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robt. Larsh, on south Washington street, last Monday night, at the age of 79years, of paralysis, of which disease she has long been a sufferer. Mrs. DePew was well known to many of our citizens, and was a good Christian woman. The funeral occurred from the residence on Wednesday afternoon. Revs. (J. W. Switzer and J. W. Greene, officiating. Death of Madison Hamilton. Madison Hamilton died at his home, five miles east of the city, last Sunday morning of paralysis of the heart, at the age of 49 years. Mr. HamJ lton was born in Virginia, and removed to this county some three years ago. He loaves a wife aud five children. The funeral occurred from the Fiends church on Tuesday interment at Darlington.
