Sept. 18.—The number of

people who perished in the Hoods in the province of Toledo is now placed at 2,300 and the number of lives lost in other localities at 500. In addition many were injured. The destruction of grape, olive and maize crops in the flooded districts is in itself a serious evil, coming as it does in addition to bad harvests in most of the provinces and their complete failure in Aragon and a portion of Catalonia, where the distress in the rural districts is intense. It is estimated that the total loss from the Hoods, including the destruction of crops, damage to property, the railways' loss of traffic, etc., will amount, to little short of £1,000,000.

The Infanta Isabella, the young kinjj of Spain, and Don Francis d'Assise have each sent 15.000 pesetas to the national fund being raised for the relief of sufferers. The queen regent has given an additional sum of 810,000 towards the national fund. The queen regent was desirous of personally visiting the ruined town of Consuegras. but she was dissuaded from so doing at the present time by her ministers. The latter represented to the queen that it would be extremely difficult for her to reach Consuegras without suffering considerable discomfort. The queen gave way to these representations, but insists that she will go to Consuegras so soon as communication with that town is safely restored.

The Dead Body of a St. Louis Man Found, Showing EviuVnoex of a Cowardly Murder.

ST. Lor IS, Sept. 18.—The body of Michael Tiernan, aged 45, private watchman of the Missouri Pacific, was foujid about? o'clock a. m., lying between two lines of freight cars, hall between Conventand Choulteau streets, with one bullet hole in the bael of the neck, a second in the left breast and a third in the left cheek, which \+as powder-burned, showing that the murderer or murderers must have been very close. There is no clew but it is supposed the deed was committed by tramps whom Mr. Tiernan had thrown out of the ears in the Missouri Pacific yards. A score of detectives are. working on the case. Mr. Tiernan leaves a widow a::d six young children in destitute circumstances. A pipe in the dead man's mouth, tightly clinched between the teeth, ti right hand in his breeches pocket and the left in the eoat pocket shows he hail no thought of danger.

WASHINGTON. Sept. The recoinage into standard ilver dollars of the S5,000.0110 (in round numbers) of trade dollars bullion. which the. last congress authorized, is also in progress and will be completed in the next two mouths.

BISMAKOK,

N. 1)., Sept. Ul.—Dis

patches from points in both Dakotas show no amelioration of the situation. The heat is intolerable everywhere, and the spectacle is presented in nearly fifty counties of farmers thrashing by the light of the full moon, acecntuated in spots by the blaze of prairie fires. In sections where the cropshave been harvested there is a fervent prayer for rain, without which there is the greatest danger of the most disastrous series of tires ever known. The. western counties in this state arc also suffering and fires are reported from C'lav, Norman and Travers counties, where lire lines are being burned in all directions by anxious farmers. Notwithstanding the warnings incessantly uttered by those who have suffered with this terrible scourge iu the past, the ordinary precautions are not taken by the farmers and ranchmen of western North Dakota, and the result is that many thousands of dollars' worth of properry is now in ashes and ruin faces many a man.

No rain has visited this section for weeks. The weeds and grass are unusually tall and heavy. The time is ripe for fires, and they are here in full force. Friday afternoon a fire broke out in Kinmons county, adjoining Burleigh on the south, and at this writing is wiping out all before it. The daily mail stage from Williamsport, the county seat of Emmons county, was utterly unable to make its usual trip Friday night on account of fires. The driver returned to Bismarck, and reports all in that section a vast ruin and only smoking embers visible as far as he could see. A fire started near AVilliamsport and swept down on the village. A fortunate change of the wind enabled the citizens to save the buildings there, but it was with great difficulty. Heavy losses have been sustained by all the farmers in the Emmons county district of the slope.

George \V. Johnson and his son, living GO miles south in Emmons county, were burned to death Thursday while fighting one of the worst prairie fires ever witnessed iu this country. The fire iwept over the country from Winchester to the Missouri river for 50 miles southeast, destroying a large amount of grain, hay, buildings, etc. An esti' mate of the damage cannot yet be made. .1

AMKSTOWN,

N. D., Sept. 21.—The

terrible heat in the past few days has scorched every stubble field and hay range in the state until the faintest .upark is sufficient to start an almost unquenchable lire. Intense anxiety exists throughout the state at this time over the danger to crops and lives as well. In this county alone over SI,000.(100 worth of wheat lies exposed to fire, which may be ignited now from the slightest cause.
