Fearful Plunge of a Union Paciflo Train in Colorado.
CARS SUDDENLY JUMP THE TRACK.
They I.and in DitcU Fifteen Feist lielow -Twenty-Six I'wsons Injured, Some Fatally FifttMMi Hurt in Anth«»r Wreck.
UNFOUTL'N ATK TKAVELKIIS. I)F.N VKIS, Col., Sept. H. Passenger train No. 314. bound toward Denver on the (iraymont division of the I'nion l'aeitie railway, was wrecked Sunday morning about 11 o'clock near Heaver Brook station and twenty-six passengers were injured. live of whom will probably die. The train was late and running rapidly, and when roundhig a sharp curve the express car left the track and rolled down a 15-foot embankment. It was followed by the mail and two passenger coaches, one of which turned over twice before reaching the bottom. The train was loaded with passengers, many of whom were knights of pythias who were, returning from the knights of pythias state convention which was held at Aspen last week. When the news reached Golden, Col., a wrecking train was ordered out and was starting when Robert I'ruin, an employe of the road, attempted to board the engine. In doing so his revolver fell from his hip pocket, the hammer striking a stone, and the weapon was discharged, the ball taking effect in the man's neck, making a wound which will result fatally. Those seriously injured in the wreck were left at Golden in the hands of physicians, while those not badly hurt were brought to this city and taken to their homes or the hospitals. It is not known exactly what caused the wreck, but as the track was a narrow gauge and the coaches very top-heavy, it is thought that the train was running too rapidly for safety.
A passenger train on the Colorado Central railroad was wrecked at noon Sunday. Fifteen passengers were injured, but it is thought none fatally. It.has been impossible to learn the particulars yet, as the telegraph office at that place has been closed.

Won't Tay Their Taxes.
TumtK 1IAI:TK, Ind., Sept. H. It seems to be accepted as a matter of net here that the railroads and some of the other corporations will resist the collection of taxes on the basis of the appraisement made by the state board. It is not understood there has been any conference between railroad otliciuls on the subject/ but the opinion is expressed by those who would most likely know the purposes of the men in control of the railroads in the state that the courts will be asked to enjoin the collection of taxes. '1 he proceedings would be in the l'nite.1 States courts, and would probably follow the precedent set in Illinois in 1ST: when an attempt was made to enforce a high tax law. wherein the state was eventually a heavy loser, md two successive legislatures modified the act. The chief complaint here, as toother property as well as to railroad. is the inequality of the appraisement. The state will net S'.IO by the increase on the stallion
Axtell by raising him to $15.1100. yet then.' is not another horse in the state ted above S-UO, although there are dozens that, with Axtell at $15,1100, should be appraised as high as SI.000 at least.
l)ooitmtluy Due in Toil Yrar*. 1Niuanaeoi.is, Ind., Sept. U.— Kev. Joseph .lenckes, J). 1)., rector of St. Paul's cathedral, one of the most prominent Kpiscopal ministers in Indiana, has become convinced Jfrom historical research that the world will end in ten years. When lie abandoned the lucrative law practice in Louisville in ISliO to enter the ministry it was liis belief that the world would end in thirty-live years, and for a long time this was the central idea of his preaching, but in time circumstances tended to check the order of his convictions. He has now a thorough awakening through the discovery of an error in the accepted system of chronology which had made the time of the judges as governors of Israel 350 years instead of 450 years. He warns all persons to put themselves in the iine of believers '"if they would avoid becoming ashes under the feet of the righteous,"' and will to-morrow begin a series of sermons on the subject.
The Assessment Too High. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Sept. 14.—The returns to the board of assessors showed a total assessment for Indianapolis of §01,000,000, and this, it was contended, was out of proportion to the assessments of other cities. A committee of citizens waited upon the board and asked for a reduction of 10 per cent., but this was refused. It now develops that the assessment is §(55,000,000, or 12 per cent higher than was reported by the auditor who claims that a mistake was made in the first figures. Tax Commissioner Walker says that the board will review the assessment of the Eby property and compel the assessor to reduce it to the amount first reported to the board.
Shot His Neighbor in Self-Defense. TEHHK HAUTE, Ind., Sept. 14. Chauncey Van 'Cleave, a farmer aged 40, was shot Saturday by Will Forbes, the 22-year-old son of Calvin Forbes, whose farm adjoins that of the wounded man. The families have been in constant trouble with each other for some time. Saturday afternoon Van Cleave met the two Forbes boys. They had a few words, when Van Cleave drew his pistol. The boy was the quickest, however, and shot Van Cleave, the ball entering the neck. The wound is pronounced fatal. The boy gave himself up anil was released on SI,000 bonds.
Returned After Nine Years. MARTINSVILLE. Ind., Sept. 14. \V. L. Whitaker nine years ago left his young wife one morning to come to this place on business. From that time until last Monday morning she had no tidings of the missing man. Four years after his disappearance she obtained a divorce, but never remarried. On Monday Whitaker returned as suddenly as he disappeared. Explanations followed and Saturday night they were remarried. Whitaker claims to be largely interested in a Colorado mine.
