Puller Details of the Work of the Recent Hurricane.
BETWEEN 200 AND 300 WERE KILLED
Fully a Thousand Other Person* were Injured The Island Completely Devastated from One End to the Other.
HUNDREDS PERISHED.
PARIS. Aug. 22.—Additional details received here from St. Pierre, capital of the island of Martinique, which was vitrited by a terrible hurricane on Tuesday night last, show that the facts already published are not onJy in no way exaggerated. but that they did not tell the full story of the disaster. The number of dead was originally estimated at sixty, with hundreds of injured. The latest dispatches received here announce that 218 people are found to have been killed in the coast towns alone, tha towns in the interior not having been heard from as yet. There is no doubt that the loss of life in the interior towns may have been as great if not greater than in the coast towns, so it is impossible at present to even make an estimate of the number of people who lost their lives through the cyclonic disturbance which brought so much ruin and desolation to the unfortunate island.
The difficulty experienced in forming a correct estimate as to the number of people who lost their lives on Tuesday night at Martinique is greatly due to the feet that the roads leading into and from the interior of the island have been rendered absolutely impassable. These roads are blocked in some cases for several miles by fallen trees and displaced earth aDd rocks. Several days may elapse before the governor of Martinique is able to give the home government a detailed account of the disaster which has fallen upon the inhabitants of that island. It is known, however, that houses, crops and trees from one end of Martinique to the other have been demolished or flattened down beyond hope of recovery. The loss to the coffee and sugar planters will be very great.
At Ducos. it is now added, only four houses remain standing out of the buildings that formed that little town before the hurricane visited it. Of the inhabitants of Ducos eighteen have been killed and a number are injured
mor».
The death list bv towns, as forwarded by Gov. Casse up to date, is as follows: St. 'Pierre. 134: Morne Rouge. 28 Fond St. Denis, 7 Precheurs, 0 Carbet, 4 St. Joseph, 20: Marin. 8 Vauehin, 10 Lamentin,

Robert,

Riviere Piloto. miscellaneous, 18. But these numbers do not include the deaths in isolated places, interior towns or upon plantations, with which no communication can be had at present. Perhaps a rough estimate of

and 1,000 injured will about cover the ground. THE NATIONAL GAME.

QThe announcement that representatives of the National league and American association are to hold a meeting at Washington next week to compromise the differences at present existing between the two organizations created quite a sensation all over the country. It is learned that the association will demand the rig.it to keep teams in Boston and Philadelphia. Cincinnati wif.l he surrendered to flie league and the association will ask for a team in Brooklyn. Another idea is to tix up *11 the differences next week and form a view agreement, which will enable the two organizations to "vere.U-e better control over their nlo^
jtead man was found an hour afterwards and search was instituted for his murderer. Dogs tracked him to Verbena, 7 miles distant, where he was found in a negro hut. The articles stolen from Parr's body were found in his possession, and he finally confessed to the murder. He was spirited away from Verbena and put on board a train bound for Birmingham. As the train approached Clanton, however, men boarded the engine and made the engineer stop. A mob overpowered the ottieers in charge of Porter, threw him out of the car window into the arms of an infuriated crowd, and he was carried to the scene of his crime and hanged at midnight to an oak tree.
A NOTIIKIt CASE DOWN SOUTH. MOHII.K. Ala., Aug. 24.—The town of Bladon Springs. Ala., the scene of the difficulty between the United States marshals and relatives of one Bob Sims, an illicit distiller, in which two men were killed and one fatally wounded, is in arms and an attaek is expected from Sims and his friends. Jim Sims, a brother of Bob, died Friday night He did not die a nat-
tiral death, however the outraged pie of Bladon formed a posse and took him from the bed where he was dying and strung him up to a limb of a tree. A message was received from liob Sims, who escaped from the deputies, stating that he was coming to Bladon with forty men to paint the town red with blood.

The troops at the disposal of the governor and a large body of volunteers are busy at work in all directions succoring the injured and burying the dead. The physicians of the island had hardly an hour's rest for the first forty-eight, hours following the hurricane's passage, and citizens of all classes are doing their utmost to succor the sufferers and to repair, so far as possible, the damage done.
