The Sad Case of Will Steel

The Patriot feels its inability to moralize on the eril effects coiniug from the excessive use or intoxicating liquors, not only to the individual who indulges but upon the family and friends as well. We would not need to go away fr.nn home for a subject upon which to base a story, but many of our people hart noticed a tall, square- shouldered man who lias been lying in the court-house park for sereral days in a semi-conscious or unconscious condition— remaiuing out all night and doing without food except in his more sensible moments when some old acquaintance aud former friend who knew him at his best would take him to the hotel. This persou is Win. Steel, of W'avelaud, who was the only son of I'r. A.T. Steel who for many years practiced successfully his profession iu in the same place aud was considered one of the best physicians in Montgomery county. The father set much store ou William aud gave him every opportunity to prepare himself to become ail intelligent an I useful citi/.en. The son was by nature very apt and until he was twentj-lwo be u\e eiery promise of gladeiiing the heart of his father and pleasing his many friends. He was schooled in New

York where in 1S0 he had taken the degrees of A. M. ami M. 1. with the high honors, and after much outlay of money and time. He. came home fresh aud began the practice of medicine with his father, who drank some oceasionly, but not to excess. The young men of the countiy envied the young doctor his. opportunities aud bright pro*sects. But it was not long until all was changed. The monster evil of drink had fastened its fangs deep into the young man's being, ami thoroughly incapaciated him from business or genuine pleasure. The father who so fully realized the condition of the son aud who saw all bis fond hopes blasted in so short a tunegrew tired of life aud 0110 sad night it is supposed he blew hi* own light out for ecer by an over dose of morphine. The mother was left in poverty aud is now keepidg hoardtsis to maintain herself. It was the young doctor who was arrested at Anderson sometime ago for "bidding tip'" two men, but with the ability to prove an alibi he secured his release. He still practices some but seems powerless to control himself, on certain occasions when lie goes ou his perodical sprees. How sad all this, when we remember that up to the time he was tweny-one all was sunshine but from twent-two to thirtythree he has lot drawn a sober breath and that now, nothing short of l'rovldental interference can save him. Is there not a lesson iu this for the young men of Lebanon'?—

Patriot.

Hick's July Weather.

Storms in progress at the opening of July will wind up to the east abeut the 2ud, and pleasant days will foll«w. About the 5th aud fitti a low barometer will, in its eastward passage, cause an oppressive, warm wave. The presence of the uew 1110011 added will cause storms 011 the oth te Oth. Cooler and fresh ozone will bring a "breathing spell," until about the lOtti, when it, will begin to growvery warm, culminating in excessive high temperature and storms about lltli, 12th, ai.d ltfth. Note the 12th and Kith. Another "breathing sptll" may intervene before the reactionary movements on aud next to the 17th. Frem 2Srd to 2(')th is the next period of storm and change. Among the hottest days of summer about this time. Mercury is 011 he 2i»th and will add cloudiness aud i:i«gginess up to reactionary days, 20th and MOth. Possibly cooler about 25th, 2iith and 27th.
