An Enormous Crop.
The immense wheat crop of Montgomery county is fast falling beneath the uiower, aud in a few days will all stand in the shock. The total amount of wheat sown in the county is 60,197 acres, distributed as follows through the several townships: Coal Creek 6,00tt Wayne 4.M13 Ripley «.«20 Brown 4.65S Scott 3,0«1 Union 19,5041 Madison 3,000 Sugar Creek 4,113 Franklin 3,588 Walnut «.500 Clark 8,(559
Total (0,197 It is estimated that the yield will at least average 25 bushels to the acre. This being the total amouut of wheat harvested in Monteour ery county will be 1,504,1125 bushels. We certainly have no causes to complain this year.— Journal.
Where Is the Whipping Post.
The Massachusetts method of punishing evil doers could have been imitated in this city this week to a pretty good advantage. Tbe first of the week a decrepit looking wretch call ed at several homes in this city aud after mak ing sure that no men were present would ask the lady for iri's roots witli which to cure his rheumatism. Finding that such an herb grew In the yard lie would ask the lady to get a spade and dig them for him. If they refused he would threaten them with bodily harm ami would soon terrify them iutodoing his bidding. As an evidence of his nerve he would return to tbe same house later in the day aud attempt to sell these same roots. He showed strong symp toms of insanity but was smooth enough to avoid the police and and has not yet been captured. Who he wasuo one knew. Watch for him and keep a loaded gun in the house to receive him. •,
A Female Fisticuff.
The merry-go-around near McKeen's mill was the scene of a high old time Saturday night iu the shape of a oue-round-go-as-you-please between two highly cultured and aesthetic young ladies, Misses Watkins and Toney. The tiouble arose through an over dose of admiration for one of the Black Hill gladiators and culminated in Miss Watkins landing her strong right heavily on the "smeller" of Miss Toney who in turn countered and caught her antagonist with an upper cut that came near laying her out. lioth then grapled and fell to the ground, clawing, biting, and scratching to the great delight of tbe gaug. Finally Miss Watkins' mother appeared upon the sceue and seperated the combatants and as

Who Owns the Elevator?
Waynetowu promises to furnish an mtere sting case for the new Judge, Harney, to digest next September. The case is something like thi9: Many yeare ago, by agreement with the couipauy, the father of Dan Curtis, of Wingate, hui't an elevator at Wayuetown on land owned by the I., B. A W. road. When the Big Four absorbed the road it absorbed the elevator too and not long sinee sold the old building to Morris Herzug for $50. The other day Morris begau tearing the old structnre down when Mr. Curtis appeared upon tbe scene and demanded the men to stop work. Thereupon Curtis and Herzog had some words, and it is reported, tbe former struck at the latter with a hatchet But without serious results. Work was suspended for a time and the ease will likely go iuto court.
The "Guards."
Thirty-five years ago yesterday the Montgomery Guards, over forty strong, Lew Wallace, Commander, went to Lafayette to attend the grand military encampment in that city ou the 1th at which was present Gen, Bucker of Keutucky, with his company, besides many crack military organizations. Of the old Mont gomery Guards not over a half dozen are now living here, the remainder having passed ove the river, or removed to the west. The "Guards" was one of the best drilled companies ever know in the west and acquired an almost national reputation. Since the close of the war sufficient interest has been lackiug to I form a similar organization, and it may be many years before we have a company here equal to the "Guards."
Four Days in a Mine.
Thursday morning last John and Hoy CosI sel, two young men, entered a coal mine onthe east bank of Pine creek, iu Liberty township, Warren county, to prospect fur coal.
They left their dinner pails and picks on ^the outside. Four days passed and being missed from the neighborhood a search was instituted. Neighbors went to the mine Sunday evening, and fiudiug the pails and picks, began to nvestigate. They found that it had caved in and the opening was close up. After digging six hours they came to the boys, lying speechless prostrate in a room, their lamps having gone out. They were taken to a neigh bor's bouse and cared for. They will recover.

"Is there ti man in all this audience," fiercely exclaimed a female lecturer, "that has ever done anything to lightthe burden resting on his wife's .shoulders? AVIiat do you know of woman's work?" "1» there a man here," she continued, folding' her arms and looking over her audience with superb scorn, "that has ever goL up in the morning, leaving his tired, worn-out wife enjoy her slumirs, gone quietly down stairs, made the lire, cooked his own breakfast, jewed the missing buttons on the children's clothes, darned the family stockings, scoured the pots and kettles, Meuued and tilled the lamps, swept the kitchen, and done all this if necessary, Say after day uncomplainingly? If I here is such man in this audience, let him rise up! 1 should like to see nim!"
