Wui. Harshbitrgnr brought in about one huudrrtd carp and placed them on sale at the meat mirket last Tuesday. The fish were caught with a seine and where still alive when they reached here.

The lecture ot Mrs. Zerelda Wallace last Saturday night was enjoyed by all who heard it. Mrs. Wallace is perhaps, the equal of Mrs. Liverranre ia foree logic of argument, though she is not so much of a polished speaker.

Work wai commenced on the new Presbyterian church last Monday moruing. A pait of the roof has been removed, the south chimney torn down and and a part of the soatta wall removed. The work will be pushed rapidly as possible.

We will probably get a 6 months school this fall and winter, half year vacation which means to the average pupil 3 inou hs in and 9 mouths out of school.

The Clouser boys have agreed if Darlington will furnish the ground and $1,000 they will locate the mill at once. Nearly half has been subscribed, and the rest can be made. The mil! it a go. Hurrah for Darlingtou.

Marshal Marks commenced street working this week. The Baptist church has 30S members in this place and vicinity.

Prof. Higgius has planted nine aores of onions ou the farm of Win. Lacas, just east of town.

Dan Baruett, a former resident of Waynetown, but later of TiUVeine, Miun,, died at his home last Saturday.

The commencement exercises «f Waynetown and Wayne township was held in the M. E. church at this place on Thursday evening, attended by a very large crowd. Every speaker did themselves justice, but Misses Polly Gray and Maggie Parsons deserves special mention.

That Trotting Dog.

W. W. Morgan is in receipt of a letter from Willie KetcVium, of Brighton, Ont., the owner •f the trotting dog Doc, which states that the attraction cannot b* secured for our fair this fall ou account of conHicting dates. The phenomenon sends out th# following challenge to the world: "I hereby challenge any pony in the world not over 12 hanas high, to a trial of speed with my trotting dog Doc, conditions to be as follows: Pony and dog to be harnessed to carts and both to trot half mile heats, host two in three am also willing to trot Doc against any man runner for same distance, cr against bicycle ridden by boy under 15 years of age: or will give a«y trotting horse a a start of 25 seconds to do a mile to Doc's half mile or will trot Doc a half mile agaigst any horse running a mile ia harness, will also match him for a contest at all gaits, walk, trot, jump ami swim, best three out of five, against any dog in the world."

Zinc Ore on the Boom.

Another train load of zinc ore from the Sny der Bros-' mines, consigned to Vivian ,fc Sons, at Swansea, Wales, left Jopliu to-day over the Missouri Pacific road. Another train load will follow next week. The price of zinc ore has advanced from $2 to per ton this week on account of heavy purchases made by agents of the Swansea smelters. Au agent of the lead ami zinc association will sail from New YoikCity on the IJOth inst., to try to find a market in Germany and Belgium for our zinc ores. The building of additional smelters and the opening of roreiirn markets are expected to send prices upward.—S Lonls Globe Democrat.

Tha Bennett Case.

lesierday was the twenty-third day of the Bennett nmrder trial in Tippecanoe Circuit court, and at noon the prosecution closed its evidence in rebuttal to the insanity plea or the defense-after examining sixty witnesses. °°di for tho state, commenced his argument at 1 p. in. and continuing until the conrt adjournment last evening. He resumes to-morrow (Monday) morning, and will probably close at noon. Milner, DeHart and Davidnon for the defense, will follow in thf older named, Proeucutor Haywood having tl\« last say. At the present outlook the case will not reach the jury before next Friday. LaFayette Times.

Struck by Lightning.

Last Friday afternoon quite a storm prevailed over the western and south-western portion of the county. Timber, fences and crops altered severely. Lightning struck the chimney of the store buiding at Fruits' P. O. tearing it down and hnrling the bricks in all directions. Howard Fruits, who was inside the building, was rendered insensible by the crash. A team hitched in Trent of the store was badly frightened and ran away, tearing the wagon to pieces. It was quite exciting for a few moments.

PETKKSHV111 n, Ind.. May 25.—Saturday evening aliont 0 o'clock a horse and buggy were found by.Joseph Dean in front of iiis house, aliont 2 miles south of town. The buggy contained the body of William Johnson with a liullet through his heart. In the buggy were two pistols with several chambers of each empty. As it was known that .Johnson and Iafe Sprinkle had been together iu the buggy search was made for the missing man, who •was found about a quarter of a mile nearer town lying by the side of the road witli a bullet through each of Ills lungs. Sprinkle,still alive, was taken to his home, where he died about midnight. It is not known how the shooting originated, as there was no witness of the affair, but it is known that both men nursed an old grudge, left town together in Sprinkle's buggy, and they probably fought it out with the above result.

A special dispatch to the .Journal received from Mankato, Minn., tells of an army of caterpillars about 8 miles from that place, which have delayed all trains 011 the Milwaukee road. Millions of caterpillars come out on the track to sun themselves and are ground into grease. They have infested that locality for two weeks past, destroying many fruit trees.
