Two Lake Shore Trains Collide on a Siding.

TERRIBLE WRECK SEAR SORWALK, 0.

The Lives of Nino Trainmen ami l'ostai Kinploycs Crushed Out—Several Persons ltudly Hurt—Story ol" the Disaster.

KII.I.F.I) IN A COLLISION.

CLKVKLAN'II, O., April 20.—A frightful wreck occurred on tho. Lake Shore railroad at Kipton station, 40 miles west of Cleveland, early Saturday evening, in which six postal clerks, two engineers and a fireman were killed. The fast mail, Xo. 14, bound east, collided with No. til, the Toledo express, just as the latter train was about to pull on the siding to let the fast mail pass. The fast mail was running at full speed, and the force of the collision was so great that both engines, three mail cars and one baggage car were completely wrecked. Following is the list of the dead:

Edward Hrown, engineer of No. 21, of Toledo, O.: Charles ToplilT, engineer of No. 1-1, of Toledo, O. F. J. Nugent, postal clerk, of .Toledo, O. Charles Hammill, postal clerk, of Elyria, O. F. K. Clemens, postal clerk, of Cleveland, O. John.I. HowerMn'-, postal clerk, of Elyria, O. James Mclviitic-y. postal clerk,of Conneaut, O. C. H. McDowell, postal clerk, of Elyria, O. Staley, fircnii.n No. I I.

The injured are: Abram Uereamer, passenger: Charles Uazey. railroad employe lvlinefolder, express messenger.

Abram Dei-earner, a farmer livingnear Kipton, was the only passenger hurt. lie was standing on the platform when the collision occurred, and his skull was fractured, lie may recover. Charles Da/.ey, son of the section bass, was standing on the depot platform and was badly hurt about the head. I lis skull is supposed to be fractured. Kxpress Messenger Klinefelder, of Cleveland, O., was badly hurt about the legs and may die. The loss to the railroad company will not fall short of $100,000. None of the passenger cars left the track and but one pas' senger received serious injuries.

It was the custom for these two trains to pass at Kipton. the Toledo express taking the side track for the fast mail, which usually went through Kipton without slackening its speed. The Toledo express was a few minutes late and had just come to a stop at the switch when the fast mail came in sight There is scarcely any curve at the station, but on one side of the track was a line of freight cars and on the other the station. These might have obstructed the vision of the engineer of the fast mail, He applied the air brakes when lie saw that a collision was inevitable, but the speed of the train was not checked materially.

The engine of the Toledo express was knocked squarely across the track, and that of the fast mail reared in the air, resting on top of the other. The fast mail consisted of three mail ears and two parlor cars, and the Toledo express of five coaches and two bag.^atre ears. The first and second mail cars were telescoped and smashed to kindling wood, and the third crashed into the first two and rolled over on the station platform, breaking the windows of the building. The two baggage cars on the Toledo express were knocked from the track, but did not turn over. The force of the collision was* so great that of the sixty-four revolving chairs in the two parlor cars only four remained attached to the floors, all the others being broken and hurled about in confusion. The passengers were thrown to the floor and badly shaken, but none were seriously injured.

The passengers of the two trains at onee began the work of rescue, and, with a corps of physicians from the town, ministered to the few who were, injured. I he bodies of the dead were all horribly crushed ami mutilated, arms and legs being torn otV. and the corpses were almost beyond recognition.

Charles Topiff. the engineer of the fast mail, remained bravely at his post and was found with his hand on the throttle, dead. 11 is hands and face were so badl.v scalded that the blackened flesh dropped from the bones when his body was taken out. Fireman Stanley, of the last mail, jumped from the train and escaped with a broken leg and dislocated shoulder. The doctors say he will recover.

The poor postal clerks had not chance to escape. They were caged like rats and the telescoping of the cars crushed the life out of them without a moment's notice. it is ditlieult to locate the blame for the accident, as both the engineers are dead. It is said, however, that No. 21 was ordered to stop at Oberlin but went on to Kipton, which is (I miles further west, and had not sufiicient time to make the side track.

THE SURPLUS IS GOING. Secretary Foster Thinks There Will Be No Spare Cash in the Treasury.

WASHINGTON, April 20.—Secretary Foster said Saturday that he did not think there would be a surplus in the treasury next year. In view of this he is considering the advisability of not paying the per cent, bonds that mature next September. There are now outstanding about So0,000,000 of 4

per cents., nearly half

of which are held by national banks to secure circulation. It is Secretary Foster's idea to follow the plan adopted by Secretary Windom in 1SS1 when the 0 and a 5 per cent, bonds matured. These bonds were not- redeemed, lint Secretary Windom made a contract with the holders to pay them 3j. and 3 per cent, interest at the. pleasure of the government. Secretary Fostor thinks that a similar agreement with the holders of the 4}. per cent, bonds can be made and the interest put at 2 per cent.
