BopL Zuek has three month's work on hand to be completed in one. W. A. Russell is having fine success at No. 12, Franklin township.
Trustees should provide all the advanced schools with encyclopedias. Winnie Lee has been out of school for some time on account of sickness.
Are you preparing for better work next year than you have done this? The last examination for graduation will bn coadueted the third Saturday.
Samuel (iilkey, who taught the primary at Alamo, was in the eity last Satnraday There is much interest manifested in the several township contests on declamation.
There were eighteen applicants for graduation from Union township the third Satnrday. R. A. Henry, of the grammar department at VTaynetown, was in the city last Saturday.
C. A. Peterson completed a successful term as principal of the Aiamo schools last Friday. Union township teachers are having their a9t institute at the Superintendent's office ^to-day.
H, R. Robertson, who has closed his year's work at Browusvalley, will study medicine in Chicago.
T. V. Maxedou was one «f the judges on the little folks' contest at Ladoga last Saturday evening.
If you wish to be transferred for school pnrposes you should look after the matter immediately.
About seventy-five applicants for|teachers' licenses were before the county superintendant on last Saturday.
Now is the titue that book publishers are offering to make millionaires of teachers in a few month's work.
Mollie Hall has received sixteen hundred dollars for teaching at Balhinch in the last half dozen years, and the patrons wish to retain her for the indefinite future.
Fred Maxwell will complete the school at Shady Nook for his brother, who enters upon his duties as assessor of Union township.
Ask a dozen men in different avocations in life what constitutes a good education, and you will receive as many different answers.
Teacher, if you wish a flattering notice in the paper of your school work, just remember the editor with some of the cake furnished by your patrons at the close of your term. Editors all like cake. Editor Warfel, of the Ladoga Leader, is unusually fond of it, and wrete the Clark township teacherB np in fine shape, bat we fear lie has made an enemy of one lady who failed to send the cake and was omitted in the flattering notices of the township workers.
Coombs Sentenced.
Mouday morning Charles Coombs was brought into court and his attorneys filed a motion for a new trial, claiming that the verdict was not in accordance with the evidence. Judge Snyder over-ruled the motion and told Coombs to stand up and receive his sentence. He arose and stood facing the judge with red, swollen eyes, and when asked if he had anything to say why sentence should not ho pronounced, shook his head and stammered some inarticulate words. The court thereupon sentenced him to twenty-ono years at hard labor in the northern prison and he was returned to jail. He will probably not be taken north until some time next week owing to the illness of Sheriff McClasky.
False Lists For Taxation.
Suits have been filed in the Boone circuit court by the prosecutor against Samuel Rodefer, Mordecai Owen, J. O. Brown, William S. Ritchie and the estate of Charles Davis, deceased, on a charge of returning false lists for taxation purposes. All of the above named defendants aro large property holders.

Troubl* With Italy.
rue killing of the eleven Italians at New Orleans iisonns may yet involva this country iuiiwiirwith Italy. That government from its representatives in this has been informed that the Ui.lted States will do little or Hoiking iu the matter. With an official note dated March 31st B'iron Fava, the Italia* raiuister, has declared to the secretary of state that the
U. S. government, not having given the aisuranc9B that the murderer* of the Italian subjects acquitted by the American magistrates and murdered in prison while under the immediate protection of the authorities of New Orleans, would be brought to justice, the Italian government has found itself under the very painful necessity of showing openly its dissatisfaction by recpHiug the minister of liiB majesty fii:ui a ccuiilry where thi Italian representative isunnble to obtain justice.
The baron will saou leuve 'lie Dn ited States leaving the secretary of the legation iu charge only of the cut rent affairs.
The actiou by the Italian government caused the deepest surprise in official circles hero when the fact became known. It had been generally supposed that the Italian government would at least await the action of the New Orleans grand juiy, which is charged with an investigation of the bloody episodo at the New Orleans jail. It appears, however, that the information received from its represeuiatives must have led that government to the conclusion that the grand jury investigation wonld fail to result in the punishment or or even indictment of any person conneoted.. with the killing of the Italians.
The letter of Governor .Nicholls in reply to Secretary Blaine was also, it is thought, regarded as evasive of the real pointat issue—iep iration for an alleged wrong—and the governor's assurances that further bloodshed would not follow, unaccompanied bj any excuse for the faiture of the state or municipal authorities to take precautions to prevent the killing, was, it ib said, regarded by the Italian government with extreme dissatisfaction. It appeared to it that the United Si.ites government had exhausted its resources Italy has 28,000,000 inhabitants and for a iu iretitne warfare is at this time much better piepared than this government. It is not very probable, however, that she desires a war with this or any other government, and the aflair we believe, will soon blow over.
Morrison's Kocky Road
Last Monday in"ruing Joe Ward filed an affidavit against Win. Alorrison, owner of a Market street doggerel, for selling liquor to minors. He haB also another case pending against him, that of ejectment, which was to have been tried at Whitesville last Monday, but owing to Morrison's illness was postponed. When he recovers he will answer to both charges and possible a few others that may oecrue in the meantime. Verily, Williams' path is not strewu with rosee.

OfSpociAl Interest to tlie People of Montgotnery Connty We wish to announce to everybody, and especially to those in need of is services, the return of Mr. Kline. Haviug taken a thorough course in optics and graduated nndor the most eminent oculists in Chicago, he is now ready, tally equipped, both in knowledge and experience, by the aid ot the latest and best ot modern appliances to correctly diagnose and properly fit the most iinperfoct eyes where artificial aid is possible. Since the science of optics is better known and the danger of imperfectly fitted spectacles permanently injuring the eyes appreciated, those who neglect the opportunity thus offered of a thorough examination free, and the best of spsctacles accurately fitted and guaranted by a practica optician are most certainly blind to their own Interests and total blindness is ofttimes the result. Mr. Kline can at all times be found at the old reliable Jewelry store of Kline & Graham, on Main street, opposite cosrt house, where he will be glad to meet all in need of his services, and will most cheerfullly give any information desired. Respectfully,
