A STRANGE ADVENTURE.
"Gool morning, sir—a lovely 1 starUiil rather guilty from tbu stooping positjou in which the voice uf my unknown colloquial hiul acccwtoil me. "I Uig your jiardon, sir," I stammered, rather confnswJ "I—I hope 1 am not trcspasKins on private grouiuhi?" "Why, sir, you are undeniably on private grounds ," returnod tluj stranger, smiling, "but I think we won't call it by any such harsh nanwi as trcspjissing. You are staying in the nei^Uborlioixl?" "I am Rtayii*K nt tho Lake house for the summer," expiamed, "and 1 suppose aiv morning walk ha.s led me farther than I at tirst intended." "You are atKMit, six uiik*s from the-houi-e, i^ir," returned tuy cocnpiution courteoitsly "and, judging fnun your occupation when 1 catiM tlown to the gate, you would not object to cronsi-ng buck by water?" 1 laughed, and acknowledged the fact. "To tell thn truuj, tdr, I was just thinking how cocl aivl pleasant a short row wmikl lie. Ln fxct, if tlie btKit had not U'en fiUitenetl I should most assuredly have braved all consequences, and boldly ad-.-enturcd the exiK'riment." '"I t.hink we can overcome that objection," Si!id Uie sti-anger, quietly turning to an old ruined tr«, whose guarded trunk overliiingtii- transi«u-ent tide, and drawing a key from its hollow depths. "Suppose we get up an appetite for breakfast together? I am not. an inexperienced oarsman tnvself, and I suppose you understand tho art uf propelling on the water?"' "Just give me an opportunity, and see if I don't indicato my education in aquatic matters," said, in hisih good humor, springing LaUj the fairylike little shell! followed by my new acquainuance. "Keiiliy,s»r, this is an unexpected treat. I scarcely know how to thank you BufSciently for your courtesy." "Then do not att.empU" said the gentle man, mclining his head with a dignilied, high bred politem*** wluch impressed me more iuid nioru in his favor. "'1 assure you .•the gratification Ls entirely mutual, l'lil! to the right a little wo shall get entangled in yonder floating 5.!ieet of water lilies if we aro not careful. l:[ou HIT word this is a most perfect morning for the water."
It t»w indeed! Across the di «nond glitter of tltfi lake the golden spieni'.ors of an A ugttst sunrise were just beginning to be rejected, and iu the distance a range of dim, inif-ly mountain peaks leaned agiiinss the horiwon like far off sentinels, almost. lobiJig their ootiine in the blue radiance of the cloudless heavens. "I wudi 1 v,ere an artist!" broke almost involuntarily from my lips.
My companion smiled. "ieivl a man he an axtUt to enjoy tlii» bejiutocji o-f sudi a yaene as this?" he asked. "A lit tic more toward yonder point, if you pluaso, sir. Now we are out in the channel, and you can pull as hard or as easy aa you choose. The boat will almost move of
Uersolf, in fact." He threw down hi.s oars and leaned back in tlKJ stern, adjusting his straw hat so as to shield his «ye.s from the too vivid glare of the morning sunshine. "One scarcely thinks of civilizjuion in such a secluded spot as this," lie murmured l.'ixily. '"1 suppose there isn't a living'soni within a mile of us. alwayse.vcentinc birti.s and llshes.'" "1 sujipose not." I asseot^.'i!, lint nevei'theleivs the forms and ceremonies of society cannot entirely bo ist aside. May I know whom I have had the ple.n-.ure of helping to an hour's enjoylucnt?"
I drew my cju*d from my waistcoat pockct and handed it aeroc-s with a suiile. '"Vernon v.'heveley, eh? A rerv pretty name, sir. 1 congratulate myself on making your acquaintance. W'iil you allow me to rccipi-vrate your frankness?

Tlie re.mom brance of wluvt 1 had otten. retul and hoard about the axpedlency—nay, the positive occcsiity—thut L',t\.-d for indulging inon»tmaniacs to the top of their bent, in whatever whim might possess their luinds, ooeurretl to me, aud 1 luuiuitied to reply "Of courso I believe it! Why shouldn't If' "Ah, why shouldn't yon, indeed? Hut People are so bkepticai nowadays. Now, vrhen !ctor Emmanuel was staying at iuy house, and Pope Pius enme down by way of the Mediterranean- Tjiie care! where arc you going?"
I bad thought to take advautag\i of t! new path into which his troubled miim had wandered, to direct the course of the boat shoreward, but his cunning, roving eye w.is upou me iu an instant. "It—it isgcttihg vary hot here," I stammered. "1 thought, perhaps, we should tlnd it cooler on shore." "Ah h-h!" he hiasod, putting his face so clow-to mine as to glare up into my eyee, under the very shadowotmywide brimmed hat, "you're a traitor and« hypocrite, Itlce ail t.he rest of 'em! But I'm pror^-jw«7. tv you. See!"
And with a burst of laughter,£9«Ksonant that the very tide seemed to tremble and quiver, he ILr..shcd a long, sliarp knife iu the air, dvMcribing a circle of gloaming li^ht round his head. My blood seemed turned to ice iu my veins ai it tbuuded across my vb.ion. '"Put up tL-e knife, your royal highness," I said, countsrfe.itiug au otlhand cane that I t'y no means felt. "Where's the use of it l/etwoiMi friends? Let's talk about the queen." 1 v. as the more, anxious to secure hi.s attention as I saw moving figures on t.he •shore, scarcely half a mile away from us, the (hitter of a white handkerchief, anil then a total disappearance of the (igun-s. Help was at hand, I fe.lt quite sure, if I could only maneuver so as to reach it. "Xo, not about the queen," said the poor maniac: "thavgrieves aud afflicts me." He cic.s-.Mi hi.s knife as lie spoke. "Hut, do you know," lie continued, "I am haunted?" "1 launted?'' I said. "Yes—haunted by a horrible, ugly old woman—a witch, or ogress, a female liend. Now', do you know," he sakl, moving clo a up to me, and speaking in a low. mysterious voice, "she won't let me alone"'" "No?" '"£hc won't. Sometimes she climbs up among tho stars at night, anil sits mere winking through my bedroom window all night long. Sometimes s!e coiner jumping down from the clouds among the rain drops, and sometimes— There she is now, with three pair of tins and a face like a fish's!"
He uttered au eldritch .screech as he looked down into the clear, shining deaths. "Let's escape from her!" I exclaimed, vigorously seizing my oars. "She can't follow us." "No, she can t. We might hide, among the woods, only, if she should turn into a squirrel aud jump up and ilowu among the trees—sbo does sometimes!'' "'Well, then, we'll borrow a gun and dispose of her," 1 said, still pulling desperately tow ud the shore, while the pcr»piration, culd aud claintny as midnight dews, .steamed down my temples. "What are you in such a devil of a hurry :"or?" demanded my companion, rather morosely. "Hold hard a little, can't you?" 1 checked my exertion. Evidently ho was in no huinor to be trifled with. "N'o hurry at all," I said, as calmly as jwssiblo "only, you sec, tlie old witch ifollowing you up pretty closely, and" "We are too near the shore," he interrupted ubruptly.
We wero within a few rods of the clustering bushes that 1 knew contained help. Oh, heaven, could 1 but reach their friendly shei' cr. How like a mass of lead my hear', sank iu my bosom as I ,«uw him catch up the oars aud strike: but oncc m-oro in a contrary direction.
But as he turned his head away I caught up the siicathed knifeand llung it bortiing upou the shore. "What's that?" ho demanded, turning quickly around. "It'syour witeli." 1 said, as unconcernedly as 1 could. "Don't you think we ought to go ashore and see what has become of her?"
His eyes roved re.stle.ssly along the green bank. "I don't know what do

Here, head her in toward the laud. 1 wonder I never thought of that before."
Poor fever brained lunatic! Even hi the consciousness of my own mortal peril my heart ached for the crazy flights of his sick fiuicy.
We were close to tho friendly land tho long, silver green tresses of the willows almost touched the bow of the boat when my strange companion started to hi.s feet, with a yell that aroused all the echoes floating over the pwiceful lake. "Traitor—spy! double-dyed villain! you have Ix-en deceiving me. Your hirelings lurk among vondcr bushes. Hut it is in vain: 1 ne rovalty of Lnglarul shall never fall a prov to base artiliocs like these."
He sprang toward me like au infurint/-l tiger. At tin? same urne the shore scented to become alive with hurrvingfigures, and I with a lasi ir.)pillflc caught up the rope that lav coiled al he bottom of the boat, with one end athxed to an iron hook, and threw it desperatelv shoreward. 1 could see a tall form plunging waist deep in the water to grasp at it. and then the clinging arms ol mv tcrnlue companion were svrc.'Uhed around me. and 1 knew no more. •x-
