WHAT IS IT?

Persons outside of the profession often ask. what is an Emulsion We answer.an Emulsion is a combination of two or more liquids, so thoroughly mixed that each Is held in permanent suspension. Several of the much advertised 'Emulsions' now on the market are nothing more than compounds, and a microscopic examination will reveal globules of oil in their original form. The Eraulslom made by Mf xxrx. J. A. ilaqee i£ Oo., Lawrence, Mass., everywhere so favorably known by physicians as

Indiana's Reapportionment. Indianapolis, Ind., Feb.

16.—Tbe

Indiana House of Representatives on Saturday continued the discussion whether the new fee and salary bill shall be made to go into effect at once or shall go into force against officers who may be hereafter elected. The measure was at last reported to a select committee of seven members with instructions to report it back to tho House next Tuesday.

The House committee on apportionment lias prepared bills which have been indorsed by the Democratic caucus. Comparatively few changes from the present law are recommended. Those affecting the Congressional districts are the following: Jefferson County is taken out of the Fourth district and put in the Third, Union is taken out of the Fourth and put in the Sixth, and Shelby is taken out of the Seventh and Rush out of the, Sixth and both put in the Fourth Ten changes are made, in Senatorial districts and about as many in the Representative districts.

May (Tnrtivel the Mystery.

I'liOViDKNfK,

Ind.. Feb.

10.—Near

Bridgeport lived fi ur years ago a young man named Charles Anderson, who was enamored of a young lady, Rebecca Money. .Miss Money had another lover whose, name was George Gillespie. The rivalry between the young men for the attentions of the young lady were bitter. One night ill September, 1S8G, Anderson disappeared and since that time no tidings from him have been received. Saturday a grave, supposed to contain the remains of the missing young man, was found in a lonely and unfrequented spot up among the hills north of Bridgeport, and 'Gillespie is under arrest to answer a charge of murder. The grave where it is believed Anderson's remains lie buried will be opened and possibly the mystery of his disappearance explained. Gillespie protests his innocence and says he knows nothing about Anderson's disappearance. About two months ago he was released from the Southern prison, where he served term of three years for perjury.

Mnniclpal Reform in Indianapolis. Indjanapous. Ind., Feb. 10.—The new police commissioners of this city took a decided step Sunday night toward securing municipal reform. They instructed the new chief of police to close the Park Theater, at which the Wilbur Opera Company was billed to give performance. The notice was not served until

l.l

o'clock in the after

noon, np to which time the entire advance chart had been sold and nearly 100 standing-room tickets The proprietors of the theater could not get a notice before the public in time to save 1,200 people gathering in the lobby and on the street in front of the operahouse. Three policemen were necessary to dismiss the crowd and their money was refunded. It is said that the new administration intends to close all saloons and gambling houses on Sundavs.

Ind., Feb. 10.—Further

examination into the books of the First National Hank warrant the statement that 1 eller Ritter's defalcation is over 805,000 and may run as high as SS0,000. It now appears that the extravagance of the manager of his music, house was the main cause of Ritter's peculations. The stock carried by the house is said to eqnal those of large cities. No arrests have yet been made, although it is possible that a warrant may be issued from the Federal Court. The bank officials have kown of the shortage since January 15. but owing to Mr. Ritter's illness it was kept quiet. Iiitter is completely broken down, and now claims he is the victim of a conspiracy. He lias en aged counsel and will tight "the case.

Interesting Bits of News from Va« rious Parts of the State.

The Legislature.

Ikdianapoms, Ind., Feb. 7.—The bill providing anew system of taxation for Indiana was before the lov- er house of the Legislature Friday and was discussed at length. Its most important feature relates to railroad taxes, which will be largely increased and must be paid directly to the State instead of to the different counties. As a recompense to the counties for taking this away from them it is proposed to repeal the twelve-cent tax levy on all property for State purposes. At present the State revenue is 81,400,000 annually, while the expenses are $1,900,000. Under a ~ew appraisement the revenue will reach 8:2,500,000. It will be necessary to make a large loan to meet expenses until the new law becomes operative. The bill for a new charter for Indianapolis, embracing the best features of Brooklyn, Philadelphia and Chicago forms of government, has, after a hard fight, in which the whole city has been involved, been engrossed in the House.

A bill has been introduced in the Senate requiring that the benevolent institutions if the State in the matter of appointing employes shall be managed on the civil-service system. Senator Ilubbi'll has introduced a bill which gives women the right to vote at. municipal and township elections.

The otlieers of the State benevolent institutions have protested against the final enactment of the bill compelling all State institutions to purchase native live stock for their meat supplies. Warden Patten declares that it, would cost the Southern prison £2,000 more a year and would be proportionately expensive to other institutions. It is improbable that the bill will become law.
