The only Protection. that will efioct-
ually protect all people, all classes, all labor anl all interests is that styled SELF PROTECTION acquired only from a truthful knowledge of ways and means, lcjral and illegal, just and unjust, by which the burdens of govern
ment, profits of labor and industry, are so unequally divided. That knowledge is power, and ignorance its slave, is forcibly illustrated daily in nil walks of life, unoi ill
people, in all niuniries. AViiere knowledge is used ao a poAcr or a means for gaining wealth without labor or an equivalent therefor, it becomes necessary to deceive or keep in iirnoranee of such methods thot-e fioni whom the wealth is taken hence it is

LEGISLATIVE SALARY-
It is hoped while the members of legislature are engaged in ihe business of reducing the salaries of state and county ofliciaiH they will not overlook the matter of chopping off their j. Members are p:-id $6 per day. This 19 is twice as lunch, if not more, than two-thiids of the members earn or over did earn at homo during the winter season. We doubt If any member from this county iu ten years past etiu make or has made as much as it per day during the winter at home. The services of the law makers are uot worth $ti per day, considering the amouut. of services rendered. A member of the present session said the uther day said that he would be willing to work foi $2 per day. This would be entirely too |„w oil the other hand and members would not attend ou any such salary. A fair and decent salary would be is4 per (lay. Out of this members could pay from tfS to sglu per week for board and incident's. Peiha,is this salary of $24 per week weuld not give members much of an opportunity to board at $4 per day hotels, or smoke many 25-cmii cigar1, or give kid-glove parties to friends, but it is good pay work for the stale in framing its laws and is enough. Retrenchment and reform is and should be the motto of the democracy, and we do not Know of a more suitable place to put this iu operation thau by reducing the salary per diem of members of the legislature. We like the spirit of retrenchment as shown thus far in the session by lessening the number of assistants in the legislature and reducing the salary of

A FREE COINAGE BILL-
The silver coinage bill as passed by the senaie hist week, is a free coinage measure, pure aud simple, and free from all the national bank ami bond legislation contained In the financial bill. With the excepti of a few technical amendments, and the omission of ihe provision for converting into the treasury the national bank redemption fund, the bill is like that passed by the seuate last year, which was the basis of the compromise embodied in the present law. The bill is now iu the house of representatives to be acted upon. It is probable, however, that a law permitting the free coinage of silver iu this couutry, will soon be passed. Whethei it is the correct thing we are not prepared to say. The masses of the American people know less (if the financial fiuestion, ate less able to decide exactly what is best for them, than any other of the many questi us coming up from year to year. There are few, very few, good financiers in this country. It matters not how well some men may be 'tble to manage their own money interests, when it comes to shaping government monetary iuterests they are ft sea, aro lost.
It is too big a thing for them. Certaiu it is there is too much tinkering with ihe money department of the government. Something definite should soon be done. Business is injured by tlie everlastini discussion. Whether we would be in better shape by the free coinage of silver any more '.ban we would be by an increased issue of paper money we know not. The experiment may soon settle it.
NO HARBISON AGAIN-
There appears little probability of the renomiuation of Beu Harrison for president in 180?. He excites little feeling for himself since occupying the chair. He is cold, repellant, aud draws few choice friends around him—in fact, taking the words of Senator Farwell, ot Illinois, a republican, he is a very little man. He has imagined, it would seem, from his earliest days, that being a relative of a former president of this country, his blood was much purer than the general run of his fellow citizeus. This uotion lie has carried with him through life, and it has made him despised by many of his own party. He was almost an accidental nomination before, but he won't be again. His nomination will carry no particular strength with it and no enthusiasm aside from the

under him and
those who would expect to be retained. There has beeu nothing iu particular brilliant in any of his official acts, but he has drifted along with the course of events and controlled nothing. Blaine IB the only member of his cabinet who appears to count for anything, aud the public is rapidly arriving at the conclusion that he is more of the administration than Harrison. Political strategy will not dictate the re-nomination of Harrison, and we douK very much if he will secure it.
THK Muucie Herald, a democratic organ, seems to need re-tuning. Its editor, Hilligas, is strongly in Tavor of Hilt for president, while its proprietor is rather inclined for Cleveland. There is in consequence considerable discord MI sounds coming from that organ. It is not absolutely necessary for the future of the democratic party if neither he chosen as nominee for president ou the democratic ticket in 18'.)li, in faot we consider that a western man is preferable. We fail to see the necessity of the democracy running to New York for ihe next half century every time it is to select a candidate for the high position. However, as we are not looking for ofQce, as some of the loud advocates of this or that candidate are, our opinion in the premises will count for nothing.
Till", republicans have a very smooth way of getting rid of obnoxious leaders. Last week they retired Blair of New Hampshire as lT. S. Seuator from that State, and in Illinois have compelled Farwell to walk the plank, he being a candidate for the same position. They would, however, love to retain Ingails of Kansas, aud are using every piece of strategy they
know
of to do so, but the Farmer Alliance members who are very strong in that state say no, aud he will probably have to follow his other defeated brethren to the same slaughter

The people saw the wrong. They rose up en masse and rebuked the party th.i had beeu untrue to them: The victory of 18U0 will be followed up iu 1892 by sweeping the Republican party off «f the face of tlm earth. Let the tune speedily come. We want economical government aud honest men to govern us. Corporations, uionopoljs and class legislation must go. There must be free and equal rights to all men, exclusive privileges to none.
KKUAKDINO the reduction of fee? and salaries of county officers, or the abolishing of fees altogether, about which much discussiou is going on iu the legislature, we thi jk that the following resuiuiiou adopted at a meeting of citizeus of Latirauge county, comes nearer aiming at justice and equity in the matter than anything we have yet seen. The following is the resolution:
Resolved. That we recommend the passage of a law that will 1. Make all fees explicit aud definite, so that the "constructive fee" shall become a thing ot the past. 2. Require all fees established by law to be paid or secured iu advance. i. Require all such fees to be carefully collected aud turne easuror of the couuty to which they may belong. 4. Fix tho minimum amount that shall be paid to any county officer as his salary, aud authorizes the couuty commissioners of each county iu the state, to regulate nny amount iu excess of such minimum sum as shall be deemed uecessary for the proper compensation of any officer, aud to sanction the employment of any deputies whose ser-.ices may be necessary and to nx ilieir compensation.
OF INTEREST TO EDITORS.
Judge Miers, of Bloomington, has rendered a decision of importance to Indiana newspaper publishers. It is the custom of many editors to date their paper one day and publish it a day before or a day latter, and in makout affidavits of legal notice to date tho publication of the notice as the circumstances may rveuire, sometimes on the day of publication, other times on the day as Hie paper is dated, ijuch a case came up in a liquor license ad, and after examining the law the judge decided that the legality of a notice must date from the day the paper is distributed, regardless of the date the paper ('ears. ...

petition of the heirs of Moses fowler' of hnfayette, WHO mil an estate of over 52,000,000, to have the will set aside so there could be a more satisfactory division aud settlement of it lias beeu denied by a judge of one of the courts of that county. The decision. which embraces about as much reading in it as a Chicago Sunday daily paper, says it cannot be done. This will be, no doubt, quite satisfactory to the ten or twelve lawyers retained by the parties interested in the case, as it will give further opportunity to bleed them.
Gov. HOYEY seems satisfied with trifles, but contends fiercely jfor them. He wants the compliment vote of the republican members of the legislature for U. S. Senator, but one, C. W. Fairbanks, an Indianapolis millionaire and active republican, wants it likewise. The members should give it to Fairbanks. The party may be able to tap his barrel in 1892, while Hnvey could not he depended upon for that purpose. As Brush says, "Boodle-' will be the thing needful in tho next compaign.
THE unusual spectacle of three men out of a legislative assembly ot 201 seeking to control a nomination of their owu is presented in Illinois at this time at Springfield. These three men belong to the Farmers Alliance and will support neither the nominee of tho democratic or republican caucus, but desire to choose one of their own. The 201 republican rnd democratic members will uot submit to be dictated by these three alliance men and how it will terminate cannot be surmised.
THK sum of ¥50,0(10 wai paid by a large crowd of mixed spectators at New Orleans last week to see the prize fight between Ilempsey and Fitzsinunons. The winner, FitzsiminnnB received $11,000,r for his victory while Dempsey got but $1,000. Certain it, is a peculiar brutal taste that, enjoys such xxhibitions. We have been in the habit of denouncing the Mexicans for their love of Spanish bull fights, hut they certainly have no edge on us in the matter of sport, so-termed.
WK, in Union township, who voted vigorously for the free gravel roads running into Crawfordsville are now eDjoymg the luxury of paying tax upon it. The additional tax this year is 10 per cent., which added to the county makes the tax higher in this township than at any time within the p»6t ten years. It was argued that Tree gravel roads would largely increase our business, but many Tail to see on which road it comes in.
