THE CRAWFORDSVILLE WEEKLY HEVIETf.

An Indiana Aatb or-

Th» Anderson 8un publishes with portrait a short dlscrlptlve sketeh ofDr. H. W. Taylor, •ow a resident «t that" alty, but formerly ot Crawfordsville.

Dr. Tajrlor is a native of Lexington, 'a. and was bora en the !5th day or December, 1848, He began writing skotolies and verses at an early age and at one time duriug the war bad a large portfolio containing good pen-and-ink sketches of tho maay campings or the array,'battlefield entrenchments, etc.

Upon coming to Indiana, Dr. Taylor loeated at Crawford sviile, the Athens the west, where he established the Dully News. Hero much ot medical and scientific literary was accomplished—comprising contributions to eighteen homeopathatic medical journals, besides his editorial work on the American Observer. Here, too, he began his real *ork as a poet—having fr HU the ago or 10 published poems that appeared in the Current, The Century, the Indianapolis Herald and the Kellogg publications. His unpublished poems that are used- very widely in declamations and recitations are qutte numerous and will at no distant day appear irt book form. Among these "Deserter Black," a study in Hoosiey dialect, is among the most popular recitations in the West. "The Aigger," The Thong." "These Two'1 and Tertnker," upappeared in The Current, and "Turkey Quill

Etchings along the Wabash" was a series of unique historical anecdotes and sketches which appoared in the Kellogg publication,

Enough to Kill All of Them.

1 begin to timk that the late Mrs. Battle' Pettit, in addition to being a most lovable womaa, was possessed of remarkable health and strength. Her endurance was almost unprecedented. It was shown OR the triai that medicine enough was given her during her three or four days' illness to have killed a dozen persons, or to have caused the doath of the famous Jumbo. This was administered by the attending physiclans ln addition she was given numerous koine remedies all this while, according to the theory ot the state and verdict of the jury, her huRbaud was ponriug the deadly strychnine into her, giving her three or four doses. Now, a year and a half after her death, the discovery is made that for jeais

Mrs. Pettit has been addicted to the use of arsenic, another deadly poison! Yet, she was a woman who enjoyed good lioalth aid was not considered to be exceptionally robust in physical health! It is ftstonislling, the number of medicines Mrs. Pettit consumed—Bvery one of them a poison,—and yet livedl If one can brieve the evidence, Mrs. Pettit took poison enough during the last few months ot her life, to have killed all the lawyers iu the ca9e, made corpses ot the jury and court officials, and caused several reportorlal funerals Really now, of theories there is no end. Every man has anew clue.—T.afavetle Leader.

Doherty to Gov. Wise.

The late Fisher Doberty, as all readers know, was a red-hot abolitionist before the war, and did all he coild to aid slaves to esoapo from bondage, spending his time and money freely in the cause. After Cook, one of the Joha Brown raiders into Virginia, was executed by order of Gov. Wise, of that State, Fisher wrote the Governor a letter of eight or ten pages full of fire aud venom for bis act on having Cook thus disposed of. The letteawas veiy waspish iu lone, so much so that Wise began seriously thinking of issuing a requisition for Fisher's appearance in Virgiaia for "treason" nnd itstrncted the Attorney General of that state to so prepare the papers. Shortly after Wise met a man named Tapp, llvlag in Crawfordsville, who at that time was visiting at Charleston, iu that State, and inquired wUo this man Doherty living in his town was, informing Tapp at tb? same time of the contents of the letter. Tapp jokingly informed him that he was an insane man, but perfectly harmless, and to pay no attention to the letter, and thus the matter was dropped. Fisher often afterwards use to late how he was saved from being hong for "treason" by Gov. Wise on account of hi "Insanity."

Farmtrs Beware.

The latest swindle is accomplished by means of a double fountain pen, one end filled with ink that fades away in a day or two. The sharper's plan is to call on farmers or others, made a trade so advantageous to tbeiu they are willing to agree to it, write the contractor agreement with the ink that fades, then inunage so that the victim signs it with ink that lasts. Then, iu a few days they have the name on a blank paper on which any sort of a note can be written. People who read the papers are careful how they sign their names to any document offered by stranger, others are caught ia the new trap —Ex.

Another Preacher Gone Wrongs At Columbus this state The jury iu the case of James Campbell, tho Methodist preach er tried for seducing and procuring an abortion on pretty Ida Anna Huntsman, stayed out all Saturday night, bringing in a verdict that morning of guilty and fined $50 and sentenced him to three years in the Penitentiary. The jury stood all night eight for conviction and Tour for acquittal. Campbell was remanded to jail, while his iDvalla wife staid at the hotel watching the corpse of their seven-months-old babe, which died on Friday.

The best medical writer* claim that the successful remedy for nasal catarrh must be nonirritatmg, easy of application, and ono that will reach all the remote sores and ulcerafed surfaces. The history of the efforts to treat catarrh during the past obliges us to admit that only ono remedy has met these conditions, and that is lily,s cream balm. 'I his pleasant remedy has mastered catarrh as nothiug olse has ever done, aud both physicians and patients freely coucede this Tact. The more distressing symptoms yield to it.
