The Veedersburg News complains that the community is in tho handa of the "White Gaps" and the people scared to death. Three different warnings were left on a? many different door steps there last week.

The school children of this city on Christmas day distributed about 125 busKels of presents among the po«r of the city. The act was very commendable and marks a precedent in the history of the city that will bear repetition.

The{bond«f John Cornier, who gave the lowest bid on the east end of the connty line gravel road, was not approved, aB one of his bondsmen withdrew. Tne contract was then awarded to -George and Thomas Lynch, ot Darlington, for $8,080.

It looks like all the witnesses against Rev. Pettit of Crawfordsville, are being "hoodoed." John Acbesou, who testified that he wanted to buy strychnine of him, was slv by a burglar. 6. W. O'dell, who was a strong witness for the state, is almost dead from having a pile driver fall upon him, and Sue Kerr, who also testified to damagiug tilings against him, has fallen and broken her arm.

From the last reports, however, the sufferer was doing well and its recovery is looked upon without a deubt.—Waynetown Hornet

It strikes the Sun that Gov. Hovey carrit partisanship too far in appointing a republican to succeed Judge Mitchell. Tho people had by a very emphatic niajerity said that at least one democrat should occupy a seat on the supreme bench. The Sun has nothing to urge against Judge McBride, but it would have been a courteous act on tho port of Gev. Hovey to have appointed Thomas F. Davidson, of Crawfordsvilie.—Indianapolis Sun.

A reporter for the Andersen Horald was in town Monday, looking into the history of W. W. Steele. His career would furnish material for much more than a newspaper article. A man ef handsome address, brilliant intellect, given a thorough education by indulgent parents, of high attainments in the medical profession, deliberately ruining himself by drink. He became a drunkard, a gambler and finally is arrested for robbing an eld man, in a distant city. The reporter says bis case is a bad one. He can prove an alibi on one charge, but the other will stick, and he will go ever the road. —Waveland Independent.

THE CKAW jRDS 1LLE WEEKLY REVIEW.

Wrangling Over the Fees*

Tho iittoniuys

Putn propose to sue Tlp-

pecauoe comity "or $10,000, for their work in defense of Pcliit, couceruiug which the Lafayette Sunday Loader says: "As tho Leader slated, two weokH ugc, we think Judge Snyder erred in aptminttag h» many attorneys in this case. There Wore six attorneys defending— five ot them uuder omirt appointment Although $3,500 looks like a big sum to uiauy, when it is cut into six parts, and the $600 ot actual expeuses incurred by tho attorneys is taken out it does not leave such a great sum for each individual. Here is where one of the difficulties comes in. The court, it seems, annoHnced at the time of the appointment, that the allowances would be fixed upon the basis of the appointment of two firms —but it seems that the iecord does not state that fact. The pie is being eut into so many pieces, that there is not enough to satisfy the appetite of any of the eaters. The nnderstandiag among the public is, that it the $3,500 had been paid, there were have been $750 for each ot the four firms engaged in the ease—Mr. Staurt being paid an equal share by associates—the $600 guing to the actual expense acconnt. Whether the county ^aiu or IOBO by the suit, the final judgement will tell.

Actually at Home-

Mrs. Elma 0. Whitehead, the somewhat celebrated female in the Pettit case, arrived at her home at Shawnee Mound last week from California. There is no doubt of this this time, for Elma has been seen aud talked with bj mauy persons since her arrival. She is ready, it is stated, to meet any charges that may be brouirbt against her in connection with the death ot Mrs Pettit, and will likely remain at home to accommodate the grand jury ot Tippecanoe county and give it time to indict her it it feels so disposed.

The Ladoga Leader is much improved .under its new management. The days will leugthen now, Sunday having been the shortest day of the year.

Many former residents of Jrawferdsvllle are back here to enjoy the Holiday season. Nathaniel Boober has been taking the CHAWFOHKSVILLB REVIEW for fifty years continously. THE REVIEW office ought to give him a big pension.—Darlington Echo.

Merchants complain of too mueh "lookaround" customers—people that would come in to inspect the stock of goods and then go oat without purchasing, and the Holiday trade was not so good this year as last.

Next Thursday the watches, sewing machine clothes and other articles as premium*, will be given to the agenia who have been soliciting subscriptions for the REVIEW. Agents have a few more days in which to get in their work.

Chas. M. Berry, of the Veedersburg News, has undertaken the herculean task of removing the county soat from Covington to that town. So far as a central location is concerned the argument in favor of the change is all right, but such an outlandish looking place as Veedersburg is, will probably forever prevent it frem securing the desired object.
