CLADSTONK AND DEHKW.
Editor Dana Compare* the Two tirtal flpeechmiikara. New York Sun: The two most prolific epeechmakers in our language la these timeB ara Chauncoy Mltohal Depew and William Ewart Gladstone. Mr. jJepew ia 66 years old, and Mr. Gladstone will be 81 next month. Both of them are strong, full of vim, and in the fullness of their mental powers. Gladstone is a parliamentarian and .publicist Depew is a lawyer, railroader,, and business man. Gladstone is a more learned scholar than Depew, who is a more nimblewitted man than Gladstone. Gladstone has been a prominent figure for nearly as many years as Depew has lived. In the activity of Depew and Gladstone there is no surcease. Gladstone is one of the most voluminous authors of the age Depew has not been what Carlyle spoke of himself as being, "a maker of books.u but he is more of a banqueter than Gladstone is. Both Depew and Gladstone are men of oourtly manners, but Gladstone is less genial than Depew. Both are owners of estates, but perhaps Depew la more affluent than Gladstone. Gladstone may again be Premier of England, and Depew majr yet be a candidate for President of the United States. Depew was a student at Yale Gladstone at Oxford. Both of thera are churchmen. Gladstone is said to be the master of seven tongues but Depew's linguistic genious is boundless. Gladstone is a Homeric and classical erudite so is Depew. Gladstone has been a Junior Lord of the Treasury, Member of the Privy Council, Secretary for the Colonies, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Prime Minister Depew has been an Assemblyman, Secretary of State in the State of New York, Minister to Japan, and President of the Union League Club. Gladstone can enlighten his hearers on almost any subject so can Depew. A statue of Gladstone was erected twenty years ago tne statue of Depew has not yet been raised.
THE NOON-DAY REST.
it Could lie Mads Sweeter and More Profitable by a Simple Method.
The business women and girls of Indianapolis aro enjoying a unique and pleasant benefit called the "Noon Rest," established In a central portion of the city by the Young Women's Temperance Union, says the Springfield Uuion. The institution is a sort of women's club and the "plant" consists of a number of rooms open each week day from 10 a. m. to 8 p. m., where all y-ung women who work in stores ai.d saops are iuvited to spend their noon hours. Tables are provided for lunches, and milk, tea, coffee and chocolate are served for 3 cents per cup.
The new institution does not come under the head of "charity" in any sense, and the details of its management are the free offering of those who are sensitive enough to realize the Instinct of women for the grateful seclusion which exclusive surroundings can give. The idea Is certainly an admirable one, and ought to be copied in other cities. And It would not be a bad idea if a similar nooning resort could De provided for men who are obliged to carry their dinnero or lunches with them.
A plain hall, neatly furnished, where women or men could sit to eat their lunches apart from the sights and •smells of the shops and spend a few moments in reading or conversation, under orderly regulations, would be appreciated in any busy community.
Watching the Clock.
As the Christian Union says, there is a deal of common sense In this story lately told of Edison, whether he said It or not. A gentleman went to the great electrician with his young sou, who was about to begin work as office boy in a well-known business house. The father asked Edison for a motto which the boy might take to heart in his struggle for promotion and success, After a moment's pause, Edison said, laconically. "Never look at the clock!"
Edison, meant, we take it, that the. man who is constantly afraid he is going to work overtime or over-hourtk dosn't stand a chance of competing with the man who clears up his desk, DO matter how long it takes. The carpenter who drops his hammer, uplifted above his head, when the whistle blows, is likely to remain a second class workman all his life. The carpenter who stays fifteen minutes to finish a "Job" Is working toward a' shop of his own.
A' Look' Panduluin.
M. Maseart, of the Academy of Sciences, has hung a pendulum to the second platform of the Eillel tower, the ball of which is within six feet of the ground. This glvas it a length of 377 feet The ball is of steel, and weighs 212 pounds. The longest pendulum known hitherto, was that of F*ucault, in the 1 uptheon, about seventy years ago, and it afforded a now demonstration of the earth's motion, but it was only about 160 feet

Oar bolt Aeld For Ant*.
A new and valuable practical ap plication of carbolic acid haa been made in Central, America, whsra it has been used with gratifying sucoess against the leaf-cutting ants, whose ravages upon cultivated trees in that country are so destructive. The acid is mixed with water, and poured down the ant-burrows, whereupon the ants desert their abode, and by persistent resort this method of attack, they may be expelled from the neighbor hood of cultivated plants.
