The United States Rolling Stock Company in Trouble.
PLACED 15 A RECEIVER'S HASDS.
It Falls a Victim to the General Tightness of tho Kiislern Money MnrUct— Its Assets Almost Double the
Liabilities.
TO PRKVKNT A FAILUIiK.
CHICAGO, NOV. 24.—The United States Rolling Stock Company, with headquarters in this city, has gone into the hands ofs:i receiver. Its liabilities are 83,810,000 assots, SG,053,000* The emb?.rra§5ia9Dt is *bg result of the Kenoval stringency of the money market, and is the first corporation in Chicago to suifer from the causes which have recently driven big houses to the wall in Philadelphia. New York and London. Tho receiver and counsel for the United States Rolling Stock Company both confidently assert that it Will pull out of the present difficulty all right that the receiver was appointed to prevent a failure and not because ono had actually occurred, and that there is really no just alarm for apprehension upon the part of the creditors of tho company. The receiver is A. Hegewisch, now and for nineteen years tho president of the embarrassed company.
The United States Rolling Stock Company is owned principally by English capitalists. Messrs. Hegewisch and Royse are the only American stockholders Tho company has a capital stock of §4,000,000, of which §3,500,000 is paid in cash and S500,000 is still in the treasury.
Most of the creditors are said to be Eastern firms and banks. Whether or not other firms are so involved as to be embarrassed no one connected with the matter could say. It is highly probable that several Eastern houses which hold large amounts of the company's paper will be embarrassed by its failure.
The United States Rolling-Stock Company's plants have a combined capacity of about sixty cars a day. The shop at Hegewisch—which town was founded by the presjdent of the company and named after him—turns out from twenty to twenty-five cars a day and employs over 900 men. The Decatur plant has a capacity of fifteen cars and tho shop at Anniston twenty cars. The latter shop also makes 200 wheels and 150 axles a day, besides doing job work in buiiding and repairing stationary engines, making bar iron and castings, and doing general work for the other shops in tho system.. Tho Urbana shop also does repair work. The saw-mill at Ball Play, Ala., is situated on the Coosa river and in the heart of a valuable timber tract owned by the company. Tie Hegewisch property is the most important and the most valuable, which led to the. application for a receiver in this district.
Mercantile agencies have always rated tho United States" Company as being sound financiafty, although manufacturer in this city is quoted as saying that the company has been pressed for ready money at several times. It doos a very large business,, and with customers who are certain to discharge their indebtedness, oven if a little slow at times. Up to tho present time no doubts ever existed of the company's ability to meet its obligations or of the very favorable condition of its affairs.
THE NEW CONGRESS.
Compilation Showing: the Complexion of flgltho Xext'Houso of liepreseutatlves. WASHINGTON', Nov. 24.—The unofficial list of the members of tho House in the Fifty-second Congress, which has been compiled in the office of the clerk of the House, is as nearly correct as any list will be until all the certificates are received. Even then it is not likely to be changed, as the list has been prepared with care, and in nearly every instance from official returns. It is interesting because for tho first time it gives a really definite idea of the political complexion of the next House. It shows that 222 Democrats have been elected on a straight ticket, the number of Republicans being 93. It gives the Farmers' Alliance a representation of 17, but 12 of this number come from the South and will act with tho Democratic party, thus spelling the latter's aggregate vote to 234. The Democratic majority over the Republicans is therefore 130, or 142, counting the 12 Alliance men as Democrats.
