Lawyers' Fees in Pettit Trial.
Concerning the fees paid attorney in the Pettit trial now under way at the court house the Lafayette Times says: The Pettit murder trial will make a heavy draft on the tax-payers of Tippecanoe county. To say nothing of the ordinary court expenses the attorney's fees will amount to a very considerable sum. Col. W. C. Wilson was appointed by the court to to assist in the prosecution of Pettit and will demand a good round fee for his services. Upon the application of Pittit, stating that he bad no means to make his defense, the judge assigned as his counsel, Judge Davidson, of Crawfordsville Col. DeHart and Kumler & Gaylord of this city. The court refused io appoint Mr. T. A. Staurt, stating that he thought four lawyers quite enough to conduct Pettit's defense. Mr. Staurt, however, remains in the case, and is one of leading counsel. His fee is probably provided for outside. The attorneys assigned by the court to prosecute and defend Pettit, will be paid out of the Tippecanoe county treasury, and as they all know how to charge fees, we may look for some tall figures. A member of the Lafayette bar gives me the following. Col. W. C. Wilson 1.500 Kumler & Gaylord 1,500 Col. DeHart 1,250 Judge Davidson 1,000
