Jrooklyn, N. Y. "From an experience of over thirty ate

years in the sale of proprietary medicines, I feel justified in recommending Ayer's Cherry Pectoral. One of .tlie. best recommendations o£ the Pectoral is the enduring quality o£ its popularity, it being more salable now than it was twenty-five years ago, when its great success was considered marvelous. R. S. Drake, M. D., Beliot, Kans. "My little sister, four years of age, was so ill from bronchitis that we had almost given up hope of lier recovery. Our faniily'pliysiciau, a skilful man and of large experience, pronounced it useless to give her any more medicine saving that he had done all it was possible to do, and we must prepare for the worst.. As a last resort, we determined to try Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, and I can truly say, with the'most happy results. After taking a few doses she seemed to breathe easier, and, within a week, was out of danger. We continued giving tho Pectoral until satisfied she was entirely well. This litis given me unbounded faith in the preparation, and I recommend it confidently to my customers."—C. O. Leppcr, Druggist, Fort Wayne, lad.

Marshal Shannon, of Clark's Hill, Plays Poker and Then rails in a Pit of His Own Digging.

John Shannon, who holds the lucrative and responsible official position of marshal of Ciark's Hill, crossed the city line latit Thursila:, ostenslblyjfor the purpose of taking in the iir. The coiniDg of Marshal Shannon did tint create as inuch excitement as he expected, but he-inade his presence felt in certain circles a few hours after his arrival. The atmosphere of the Star City soon converted Shannon to the idea that he was a plunger, and, it is alleged, he possessed the magnificent suin of $12.50 to inflate hiB imagination. In the evening he invited himself to the card room connected with the establishment of Wm. \'ox (Tuck) with tlie determination to give the boys points cards, at anything from "beggei my neighbor",to "old sledge." This calls to mind a remark previously printed in the

Times to the effect that the fellows who learn ti play poker and old sledge in the hay-mow and getting iuto some ot the tricks at cards, Invariably come into town to practice on old bauds at the business! The result of Shannon's expedition was, as usual, disastrous! He played poker, his chances fully equal with those of his opponent, but saying nothiug or the different views taken of the teachings of the late Mr. Hoyle. Shannon guessed away his $l.\50, and then he wasn't a plunger any more. He merged into a squealer, the rankest kind oi a one, wild wooly, uncurried and un thinking. He galloped to the Mayor's office and demanded that the whole Cox establish meni by lined for gamblir commencing at the head down to the man who operates with a spouse on the front windows. He was willing, however, to repent if his §12.50 was returned to liiin. He didn't get it. Upon his affdavit then Mr. Cox was finod €21.25, aud couple of John Does §15.25 each. All prompt ly paid. But there was a rub for Marshal Shan non! He too had been gambling—trying to win other people's money at a game they all understood. The mayor thought Shannon guilty to the extent of $15.25. He was minus cash or security, and then he was made to feel that John A. Maule was not discourteous to officials from abroad, for Marshal Maule immediately provided Marshal Shannon with comfortable quarters in a stone parlor of the luxurous left wiug of Hotel de McKee, where the visitor reflecting on the coined saying that its a mighty unhandy knife that cuts two ways! —Lafayette Times.
