Amanda B. Jennor, Northampton, Mass., writes: Common gratitude impels me to acknowledge the great benefits I have derived for my children from the use of Ayer's most excellent Cherry Pectoral. I had lost two dear children from croup and consumption, and.had the greatest fear of losing my only remaining daughter and son, 6s they were delicate. Happily, I find that by giving them Ayer's Clierry Pectoral, on the first symptoms of throat or lung trouble, they are relieved from danger, and are be' coming robust, healthy children." "In the winter of 1885 I took a bad cold which, in spite of every known remedy, grew worse, so that the family physician considered me incurable, supposing me to be in consumption. As a last resort I. tried Ayer's Cherry PectoTal, and, in a short time, the cure was complete. Since then I have never been without this medicine. I am fifty years bf age, weigh over 180 pounds, and attribute my good health to the use of Ayer's Cherry Pectoral."—G.W.Youker, Salem, N. J. "Last winter I contracted a severe cold, which by repeated exposure, became quite obstinate. I was much troubled with hoarseness and bronchial irritation. After trying various medicines, without relief, I at last purchased a bottle of Ayer's Cherry Pectoral. On taking this medicine, my cough ceased almost immediately, and I have been well ever since."—Rev. Thos. B.

The following letter from Denver, Colorado, to the Cincinnati Enquirer in regard to the purchase of the Rocky Mountain News by Tom Patterson will be read with interest by his many friends here:
THE ONE BIO POLITICAL EVENT Jupt now talked about here is the change in tha ownership of the Rockey Mountain News. It hris become'the property of Thomas M. The news has beei in antagonism to the democratic] press of Colorado within party lines for many years, and Arkins, who is a hard |fighter,-was only recently denounced in th(j democratic editorial convention of the state. The doctor, however, advised to get some of Speer's Port Wine, and give her a little at a time—very little, but often. As a last resort we did so, and I say that Speer's Port Wine saved her life. She is my only child. I had never seen Mr, Speer, but with tears of joy I went and told him that his wine had saved the life of my only child."

THEODORE PARKER.
A Kemlnlgcence of the Famous Divine ma Seen at the Carnival at Naples.
jff in February. 1844, Naples, a wandering
On an cvenin baing then at student from Harvard, I was seated in l.,e dining-hAll of a hotel, when a man at another table attracted my notice. Ho was about thirty-live years old, with a bald forehead, spectacles, a thick short nose, slightly suggestive of the busts of Socrates, and a large bucolic mouth. Opposite to him sat a young and pretty woman, with a fresh complexion and a look of extreme shvness. ""Where have I seen that Scotchman before?" I asked myself.
The supposed Scotchman presently looked at me, then whispered to his companion, who glanced timidly across the room and shook her head. The man soon after arose, walked in an awkward way to when) I sat, and said, bluntly, "You are an American." '•Yes." "You are from Boston." "Yes." "I think I ought to know you. My name is Theodore Parker." '•I have seen you," said I, with gleam of recollection, "at my father's house, with the other ministers of the
Unitarian Association "Ah, yes that's it. I remember you now. I never forget anything or anvbody. But what are you doinaj at Naples. I thought you were in college at your books." 1 explained the matter to his satisfaction, and he introduced me to his wife. On the next day we went up Vesuvius together.
It was the opening dav of the Carnival. aud entering the Via Toledo on our return we found that great thoroughfare filled with an obstreperous mass of humanity. A long file of dragoons, seated motionless on horseback. stretched down the middle of the street, aud at the sides were two lines of carriages slowly moving in opposite directions, while incessant volleys of plaster confectionery were exchanged between the crowded balcouies ami the throngs below. Our barouehe fell into line with the rest. Suddenly tin* driver, pointing down the street with his whip, cried out,
The the King!" And there, in fact. a- King Ferdinand, discharging that par' ol his royal functious which consisted in encouraging his people to amuse themselves. He was a tall, large man, robed from head to foot in a loose black gown, aud looking more like a minister of religion than a masqucrader as he sat bolt-upright on a sort of triumphal car. In his hand ho held a hollow, cone-shaped implement of brass that might hold something more than half a pint. This was constantly tilled by au attendant with hirsre sugar almoudp, hard as pebbles, which his Majesty thus iluug to right aud left among his subjects. A few years after, Hinging bomb-shells instead of sweetmeats, he earned from a grateful people the name of Bomba. In the same line with us, and a little in front, was a gayly decorated car tilled with nobles of the court in masks
They stopped when they came opposite the King tho royal' car stopped also, and a hot battle ensued, each side lustily pelting the other for a minute or two, amid a universal roar from the delighted crowd. Then the illustrious combatauts saluted each other, aud the two processions of carriages began to move again.
When* the King was within easy range of our barouche, he discharged a volley of his sugar almonds at Mr. and Mrs. Parker, who sat 011 the back seat. One of them hit Mrs. Parker in tho face and the rest fell rattling into the carriage. Parker aud I jrathered them up. I tossed one of mine at a girl iu tho balcony above, and she replied with a handful of plaster confectionery, extremely well aimed. Parker reserved his shot for other objects.
A priest in a broad-brimmed hat, looped up at both sides, was pacing among the crowd, with tho complacent gravity of one who felt that bis person was* sacred from assault. To the consternation of his wife, Parker threw an almond at him and missed him. "Never mind," he- said "there'll be another soon there's plenty of 'em."
In a moment lie saw one more solemn than the lirst, and at once prepared for action, in spite of his wife's anxious remonstrances. It was a wellfed father, with a double chin. '•Don't lire till you see the whites of his eyes," said I, plagiarizing the order of Israel Putnam at Bunker Hill.
He took tho hint, let the enemy apjmmch till within a few yards, then let lly, hit him hard iu the nose, aud at 011 eo drawing himself up, gazed solemnly into vacancy through his spectacles, with an air of superiority to the follies around him, while the priest glared about iu fury to lind the author of the outrage.—Dr. Francis Parkmaii in Harper's Magazine. .»

There are but fa-w large abaloues left. One can find wave-worn shells on the beach or in the deep limestone oaves that are larger than any now obtained. You will still find thousands of about the size and shape of a gentleman's watch crystal, but the shells that are eight inches across only turn up at rare intervals, and are nuich sought for by collectors and jewelers who know their beauty wheu polished.
Their are two sorts bf abalones on the California coast, one black on tho outside. the other red. When this outer shell is ground partly through the effect is either black or red, as the case may be, on a pearly ground. The abalone pius and fleeve-butlons that contain green or blue shades come from the pearl buttons iu the blackbacked abalone, while those tlint contain silvery and green tints come from the buttons in the red-br.cked species.
