CROM Stomach and Liver dcr&ngoments—Dyspopsia, Biliousness, SickHeadacbo, and Constipation—find a safe and certain relief in

Ayer's Pills. In all cases where a cathartic is needed, these Pills are recommended by leading physicians.

Dr. John "W. Brown, of Oceana, "\V. Va., writes I have prescribed Ayer's 11lis in my practice, and find them excellent. I urge their general use in families."

For a number of years I was afflicted with biliousness which almost destroyed my health. I tried various remedies, out nothing afforded me any relief until I began to take Ayer's Pills."—G. S. wanderlich, Scranton, Pa.

I have used Ayer's Pills.for the past thirty years, and am satisfied I should not be alive to-dpiy if it had not been for them. They cured me of dyspepsia when all other remedies failed, and their occasional use has kept me in a healthy condition over since."—T. P. Brown, Chester, Pa. "Having been subject, for vears, to constipation, without being able to find much relief, I at last tried Ayer's Pills, and deem it both a duty and a pleasure to testify that I have derived great benefit from their use. For over two years past I have taken one of these Pills every night before retiring. I would not •willingly be without them." G. "NV Bowman, 20 East Main St., Carlisle, Pa. "Ayer's Pills have been used in my family upwards of twenty years, and have completely verified all that is claimed for them. In attacks of piles, from which I suffered many years, they afforded me greater relief than any medicine I ever tried."—Thomas F. Adams, Holly Springs, Texas.

The Modern Theory of I.lfe. Science knows little about life yet but has made a near approach from two or three sides. It is known how death and decay invade the system in the shape of mictobes or the tangleweed of useless tissue invading the vital organs. Preservation is the only system of medical tactics that is effective. Every young person is liable to infection every middle aged person Is already in death's net. FREMONT'S EXPEDITIONS. HW His Genius In Kxplorations Fully Appreciated by His Countrymen.

Fremont's genius showed itself chieily in his explorations, which were fully appreciated at tho time by his fellow-countrymen, and were kuown to the scientific world of Europe. His live different exploring expeditions covered a period of more than ten years. Before the first of these expeditions general ignorance prevailed as to the specific character of the country between the eastern slopes of the Rockies and the western slopes of the Sierra Nevadas. This he supplanted •with accurate and extensive information as to nearly the entire region west of the Missouri river and between Mexican and British possessions.

The personal experiences of members of the exploring parties would make a volume of thrilling interest. In those days buffaloes swarmed on the Western plains hostile bands of Indians were frequently encouutered aud routed. The lives of the explorers were full of extremes. From a superabundance of buffalo meat ou the hot

Ecfore

rairies, it was often but a few days the party almost died of famine in the snow of the mountains. At different times some of them were killed by Indians, overcome by the cold, lost in storms, and forced" to eat their horses and dogs. They descended rapids, and cut their way through snow banks until many of their animals died of exhaustion aud hunger.

Fremont was an ideal leader. His courage was a constant quality. His companions admired him for his generous feeling for all of his companv: aud they could not but be brave when led by "one who had no fear. Among his companions was the famous scout, Kit Carson, whose ccccutric daring and skilful hunting enlivened with many surprising iucidents the experiences of the expeditions which he accompanied.

The object of tho first expedition was to obtain accurate knowledge as to the character of the territories of Nebraska and Wyoming, and especially of South Pass—the opening through the mountains ou the way to Oregon. He accomplished even more than, this going farther north, ho planted the United Slates flag ou the highest peak of the Rockies, which now bears his name. His report at once made it evident that much of this Western country was so fertile that it would soon be settled.

The second expedition which started iu the spring of 184:3. anil lasted for fourteen mouths, was much more ambitious. Its object was to explore the possible lines of communication between Missouri. Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah. Idaho and Oregou, aud to find a way by land from the lower Columbia river to tlip bay of San Francisco. The wonderful hardships endured upon this expedition were rewarded with the marvelous disclosures of the geographical variety aud wealth of th#

country traversed. The great Salt Lake was hitherto almost unknown, and no accurate information existed with regard to California north of Sacramento. It was his report of the resources of Utah that first attracted the attention of tho Mormons, and ultimately led to their removal to Salt Lake City. During this expedition Fremont led unguidedover the mountains his Jjfind, composed mainly of French Canadians, where, the native savages told him, there was no trail, and where his beasts of burdeu could find neither subsistence nor footing. These heroic deeds spread his fame wherever newspapers were read, aud won from his goveruiuent the double brevet of first lieutenant and captain.

The purpose of the third expedition, begun in 18-15, was to explore the great basin and coast of California and Oregon. Political events interposed, and transformed this scientific expedition into a military and political conquest.

The fourth expedition, begun in 1848, at his own expense, discovered a passage to California via the head waters of tho Rio Grande, along a route subsequently followed by the Southern Pacific railroad.

The fifth and last expedition was undertaken in 18o3, with a view to discover the best route for a national highwaj* from the Mississippi valley to the Pacific ocean.—Harper's Weekly.

The discoveries made by Stanley show that the Nile is the longest river iu the world, being at least 4100 miles in length. Were the Mississippi regarded merely as a tributary to the Missouri, as some geographers contend, the latter stream would surpass the African watercourse, having a leugth of 4 ")00 miles. The Amazon is estimated at 8600 miles, and is second in si/.e of the.great rivers of the world.
