Another Monoa Wreck in Whioh a number vere Killed and Wounded. The Mouon railway seenw to be the victim for some weeks past of many costly aud disastrous wrecks and much loss of life. There have heen more than a dozen within a month past, and the cost to the company must roach many thousands of dollars. It seemB to result more from iucompoteut management than dedefectivo roadway or machinery. The last wreck occurred Sunday morniug last, north of Bedford. Passenger train No. 8 that left Chicago Saturday night in charge of Conductor Pete McDonald aud passenger traiu No. ti that left Louisville Sunday morning collided seven miles north of Bedford at 10:25, killing the engineer and fireman on the south bound tiaiu. Both engines are totally wrecked, and the postal car aud express car on No. 8 telescoped the baggage car, aud the parlor car ou No. 6 telescoped. Fortunately the passengers were not injured. The following is a list of the killed:
Arthur Burns, the engineer of train No. 3 residence. New Albany. George E. Cole, his iii Albany.
fireman residence, New
Injured: Bob Muir, the eugineer of train No. residence, New Albany. George Smith, his lirtnau residence, Lafayette.
Frank Blackwell, express messenger, train No. 3. Joseph Tilford, postal clerk, residence New Albany, leg broken, skull fractured, crushed iu the breast, cannot live till morning. His father and mother live at Bedford.
S. S. Bent, of the Monon, cut in forehead. Frank Shanks, back hurt. Edward Muir, the son of the engineer, head and face cut.
J. P. Sudil, postal clerk on traid No. 6, leg bruised. J. W. Jenkins, porter of the parlor car, leg and hip crushed.
The engineer and fireman of train No. 3 wore buried under the wreck and it required several hours to get them out. It is one of the worst wrecks that ever occurred. Traiu No. 6 was in charge of Conductor John Bills and passed there on time, while the train from tbe north was six hourB late when they collided. Conductor McDonald said that he and his engineer agreed to side track at Guthrie, a small station three miles north of where the collision occurre.l, for the north bound train. He then fell asleep aud did not awake until the collision. All the Injured were taken to Bedford. John Tilford ordered the sheriff to arrest McDonald. The excitement was very great for a time. It look the men untill Monday to clear the wreck.
Hold the Water Works Company Responsible. After a week of special meetings investigating the cause of the inefficiency displayed at fires in this city, the council through P. S. Kennedy as attorney, have submitted their decision to the people. The report fully exhonorates the firemen from all blame and holds the water works company responsible as the following extract from the report will show:
Your committee of the whole council, to whom was referred for investigation the alleged insufficiency of the water supply at the Martin ico house fire and that of the Crabbs «fc Reynolds elevator, beg leave to report that they have before them a sufficient number of witnesses who have personal knowledge of the tacts pertaining to the alleged insufficiency of water at said fires to establish the fact that at both the fires mentioned the fire department was greatly hindered iu its contest with the flames ou account of an insufficiency of water, aud that the damages at both fires were greatly aggravated by such Insufficiency.
Your committee further finds that the fir# department of the city is without blame for the loss of the buildings of Mr. Martin and Messrs. Crabbs & Reynolds that the department did the best it could with the little amount of water at its command, and that the loss of the buildings and property in question is largely attributable to the failure of those in charge of the water works to carry out the company's agreement with the city.
Your committee would farther report that while the ordinance provides that citizens who may be damaged by the failure of the water works company to perform its contract, may sue the company for such failure, the company is iusolvent, and the citizens, therefore, practically without remedy for any failure on the part of the company to furnish water at fires. The citizens are being taxed to pay for something which they must depend upon the mere pleasure of the water works compauy to furuish, there being no practical way of coercing the performance of the contract of the company, unless it can be done by withoiding payment of water rents due from the city. And your committee is advised that this may be done.
Was it a Eabid Dog.
Charley Condon's little girl, eight or nine years old, was seriously bitten, and Mat Fergurson's little girl, slightly bittenThursday evening by Lou Custer's bulldog. Mrs. Win. Fer gurson and family were visiting at Mat Fergurson'B when Lon Custer's bulldog came over and attacked Mat's little dog and killed linn, in spite or the efforts of the women to drive him off. He theu went under the house, and the womed and children went over to Will Fergurson's when the dog followed them and attacked Mat's little girl. Mat came in during the excitement and seized a guu aud shot the dog, but only succeeded iu wounding him. The dog then turned and ran to Charliey Condon's and bit her severely iu a number of places before he was dispatched. Will Fergursou came up with Fergurson shortly a Her the dog was driven off and killed him a few rods from Condon's house. Dr. Berryman went out and cauterized the wounds, and commenced a vigorous treatment to counteract the effects of poison, if the dog really had hydrophobia.—Darlington Echo.
