Early Thursday morning lightning struck the barn of Jacob Bowman, at Jacksonville, Montgomery county, and it was burned to the ground. He lost in the flames a fine staiilon, several horses and other property to the amount of $1,000. Insurance $600.—Terre Haute Express.
Mrs, Elenor Lemon, widow of the late A. W. Lemon, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ella Carpenter, ou Saturday afternoon last at the age of 74 years. Death was caused by a sudden paralytic stroke. The funeral took place from the residence on Sunday, Rev, D. P. McLain officiating. ..

The Midland had one of its aetni-periodical "spells" this week, and has had a surveying corps at work, surveying a route from near the end of the old grade, at J. S. Kleiser's, through the south part of town, along Walk er's lluu, connecting with the Vandalia about a half mile west of town. White, a colored gentleman representing JthefiFreeman, a paper published in Indianapolis by colored people in the interest of the democratic party, was In the city this week, soliciting subscriptions for his paper. Mr. White iejan educated Negro, a gentleman in appearance, [and received quite a great deal of encouragement from the white Democrats ot this city.
