A New Firm
On Tuesday of last week a trade was coneunated in wbich Torn Houlihan became a partner in the well known grocery house of C. N. Vancleave on north Washington street. The result of this partnership is probably a combination of the best young business talent to be found in the city. The narrow scope la the grocery business does no suffice this raterprising firm and they will at once enlarge to their full proportions by putting in a large nnd complete line of hardware and farm implements and take their stand among the leading Arms. Mr. Houlihan is especially fitted for the new position and will give it all of his attention. Being thoroughly acquainted with the needs of the farmers everything used used by them will be kept in stock and Ibe sold on a live and let live bases for cash. AB for Mr. Vancleave in his department nothing need be said, as his already large trade speaks louder for him than words can praise. In order that they may sell goodB to one and all alike, and at the very lowest possible figure, they will, on and after July 1, 1890, institute a strictly cash system and give their customers a benefit of the money lost on bad debts and the accruing interest which they never get. When In the city go and see them and yoa will never retrret it.
Obituary.
James Davis was born in Virginia May 24, 1816, and came with his parents to Montgomery county when but nine years of age, where he has lived nearly all his life. He was married twice and was the father off twelve children, seven of whom preceded him in death, four dying when quite young, three llater in life. The surviving children are John W. Davis, of Yountsville Mrs. Wm. Baiser, of Alamo Jos. L. Davis, of this city, and Albert and Edgar, students of Wabash College, who live with their mother on south Walnut street. Mr. Davis was one of the oldest residents of this county, having lived here nearly all of Jsixtyfivo years, was generally known and universally respected as a man of strict business integrity and a devoted Christian. He left his farm and came to this city little more than two years ago to give his SODS a better opportunity to pursue their studies at college. For 20 weeks, which occurred on the 18th, he was a great sufferer from Brights disease, but he endured it all with such patience as gave expression to his substantial Chnstiau character which had been the beauty of his life.
Empty Houses.
The somewhat surprising fact is made known by Mr. Nichols, the city assessor, that there are 150 empty bouses in Crawfordsville at this time. This certainly does not indicate much thrift and business for our city, and indeed, presents a discouraging out-look. The want of work has drawn laboring men away from the city to seek employment elsewhere. Dull trade has become entirely too common a cry, and although neighboring county-seats may not be any better favored than ourselves still that does not help us. Here is a fact for our capitalists and men of means to contemplate. 150 houses empty! If they do not put their shoulders to the wheel, who will? If our city is to thrive and prosper who can make it so much so as they? If they will not offer inducements to manufacturers to locate, are there any others who can?

In the vicinity of Monticello, parties representing themselves as being connected with Chicago houses, have been Belling groceries to the Farmers' Alliance and to farmers generally at wholesale prices. Sugar was Bold at an especially low price and several car loads. The sugar arrived, was inspected and proved to bo equal to samples, but when about six inches of the top was used out of it was discovered that the remainder was pure Lake Michigan sand.
