The Improved method of listening strings of pianos, invented by us, is one ot tho most Important improvements ever made, making the instrument more richly musical in tone, more durable aud lews liable to get out of tune.
Both tho MASON & HAMLIN Orennsandrianos excel chiefly in that which is tho chief excellence in any musical instrument, quality of tone. Other things, though important, are much less so than tliis. An instrument with musical tones cannot ho good. Illustrated catalogues of now styles, introduced this season sont froe.

A Cl*'&n Record.
To TUB KniTOK-Sir: It will be remembered that Col. John Lee of Crawfordsville was appointed, on the recommendation of the late Vice President Hendricks, Senator Voorhees, ex-Senator McDonald, ex-Gov. Gray. Gen. M. D. Mauson ami other prominent democrats of Indiana, to the position of superintendent of the government Indian school at Saleui, Ore., and a special disbursing agent of the government, He served from Oct, 1,1885, until March 20,1889, and it goes without saying, by all who are acquainted with the facts, that lie was a careful, paiustakiug officer aud strictly houest, and although it was one of the most difficult positions to fill iu the Iudian service, it was so conducted by Col. Lee that he often received commendations from the commissioner of Indian atTairs for his faithul and efficient service, aud on his retirement from the service ex-Commissioner John H, Oberly, in a letter addressed to the seuators of Iudiana, paid: "Iu justice to Mr. Lee it is but due him to say that this is the model Indian school, and under his managements has reached the highest state of efficiency."
Col. Lee lias just completed his final accounting witli the Indiau department of the government, and it is found that he has faithfully and honestly accounted for every dollar thai has passed through his hands asdisburing ageut, and that there is still standing to his credit the sum of $113.31 on account of money placed by him in the First National bank of Saleui, Ore., to the credit of Iudian pupils of said school.
Financially and in every other way the school was marked a success from the time Col. Lee took hold until he retired under the circumstances not at all creditable to one S. A. Albro of New York, and one Gen. Frank Armstrong, late of the Southern Confederacy, The former relieved Col. Lee, who was for almost four years filled his trust faithfully and well, and appointed two of his near relatives to the best positions in the school in the interest, doubtless of civil service reform. Col. Lee had the American flag floated over the Indian school chapel and he also had one H. H. Booth, formely private secretary of the late Jefferson Davis, to be discharged from his position as clerk in the school on account of druukennesB. These two offenses were doubtless considered by the ex-brigadier general of the Southern Confederacy to be sufficient cause for the relief of any Indiana democrat, and lie so recconimended. But Col. Lee and his friends can stand it. They have cause to be proud of the record made iu behalf of the Indian children aud iu behalf of a pure aud houest administration of public afliairs.
