The youngest department in our store, but one we are pardonably proud of. Although we launched this department only last fall we are gratified with the success with which we have met from the ladies of Crawfordsville and Montgomery county, and to show our appreciation of this treatment we offer for the coming season the choicest line in this department ever shown. A Well Planned Elopement.
Late last Saturdiiy night Clerk Hulet was aroused from his peaceful sluuioers by Henry Vancleave, who had a dispatch from Charles A. McCiure, of Waynetown, to secure a marriage license for himself and Miss Maude York. The couple drove through from Waynetown and arrived in this city about 1130 o'clock. They at. once repaired to the residence of Rev. Swltzer, aud as the clock tolled the weird hour of midnight the happy couple were united for lire. They at once took the train to Lafayette, thence to Frankfort, where the grooin is principal of the graded schools at a salary of $1,200 per year. Mr. McCiure is well kuown in this city, having at one time been connected with the Daily Times, a morning paper long ago defunct. Miss York Is quite an accomplished young lady hailii from Coal (.'reek township, and the successful contestant in last year's county declamation contest.
Early Closing Movement.
Efforts are being made to agaiu adopt the arly closing movement among the dry goods and clothing stores, but this year it is SOIIKwhat more diflicult. Several store keepers are posed to it, while the majority favor it, we understand. Said one storekeeper, "1 am willing to give my clerks what I believe is sufficent rest and recreation, but at the same time if there is any money iu remaining open until St o'clock p. in., I want it, as it is money that I am here for, and do not ask my clerks to stick any closer to business than I do."
Colt Show at Veedersburg.
The business men of Veedersburg, following those of Crawfordsville are to have an exhibition of horses and colts at that place ou Saturday, April 2Gth. The animals are divided into classes and premiums given by the merchants are awarded for the best iu the different classes. It is given for competition only among the farmers of Fountain county. Music is to be furnished and a large crowd is expected in attendance.
Miss Edna Nicholson, lias just returned from Chicago where she purchased an elegant stock of fine millinery for the spriug and summer trade. Styles were never as pretty as this season, See her fine work.
NOTHING SUCOEHhS LIKK SUCCESS.—I has heretofore been a mystery to us why strangers are generally charged so extravagantly by hotels in large cities. Happening a short time since at the Gait House, corner Sixth aud Main streets, Cincinnati, Ohio, man aged by W. E. Marsh, Jr., sou of the proprietor who established the Gait, House fifty years ago, the mystery was solved. The accommodations at the Gait House are equal iu every respect to the best two-dollar per day hotel aud yet the charges are only $1.50 per day for meals and room single ineals thirty-five cents.
The Gait is headquartars for the most com plete meals, which, together with free use of the parlor, office, check-room, etc., constitute the greatest bargain obtainable iu the city. The solution is easy when the facts are kuown. The (ialt is run exclusively the interest of strangers, the same rate being charged per day, at all tunes, to everyone. Whatever will produce a reasonable rent for the property is the extent of its charges, thus doing away with the usual lesses's profits. Its management is constantly under the immediate aud personal control of the owner, W. E. Marsh, Jr. Its employes being paid according to the volume of business, are efficient and reasonable 111 cost. The above peculiarities, a low uniform price, a reasonable rent-charge only, a rigorous aud practical supervision of its Internal affairs, and co-operative salary payment, have secured for the Gait a fair transient trade, and the •&- periinent is a success, producing rent for the real estate. To this benefactor, who has made it possible to stay two day's in tiie city at'.he expense of one, we heartily reccommend our friends.
Have you any trouble with your eyesi' If so see Prof. Powers at the Nutt House and learn what the difficulty is. No charge for examlii' ations.
