The Great Chase After Fishes, Etc. The most exciting chase of the season is now on for the Republican noni'uatiou for mayor. Four gallant gentlemen are on the turf, and three of them are bound to sit in sackcloth and ashes on the dunghill of political despair, after the primary. They are Colonel John Burford, whose galleut conduct in the blocks of live campaign of 18SS, entitles lnui to recognition and a seat in the milk white throne of Crawfordsvllle's executive. Then we have lieutenant Col. 'William Carr, a gentleman with a fierce mustache and aright to approach close enough to Boss Drown to whisper to him. His chief claim to recognition by the g. 0. p. lies in the fact that he at one time ordered the street commissioners to raise the wages ot his men from $1.25 to $1.50 per day. This he feels sure has put him 011 record a3 a friend of the horny handed sons id' toil. Then comes Major Thomas Stilwell, the hero of a field as yet unnamed, whose cl' ,ei characteristic is being able to wear a silk plug hat and cany a gold headed cai.e, miu M'il to treat common people civil, especially when he is 011 the hunt fur votes to boost him into a coveted place. Tommy is quite sly, and though he has not the ear of the bosses he may, by a circuitous route, bob up and astonish uoiiioiiixt.%, L- ,tiy comes the imported otlice seeker from the far east, who came among us free from the duty which should bo placed ou imported legal mugs, who come 11-0111 New York to compete with western brains. Judge Cliuiuasero, a good old man, no doubt, who has, so the story goes, tilled a bench iu the state oP'New Yawk" whether a shoemaker's bench or a Judge's, this paper can not say. Judge Chummy had not been iu the city more than a month belere he ollered himself as a sacrifice ou the alter of his country. He would be willing to take almost anything so it was known as an otlice. To give his pain ease, the republicans nominated him for Justice ot the Peace hoping to see him beaten, but fate stuck him to them like a coekel burr to a lamb's tail, and he can't be made let go. They proposed to slop him in his career, so they nominated him again for Jus ce. but he wants to climb into the Mayor's chair. A few eveniugs ago they say he wandered into a neighbor's house, declared it was his own and den nded that the father-in-law of the neigliseek another roost. Th's is a had habit for a mayor to get into. This thing of a mayor getting into the wrong house is sure to bring dister to .e mayor, In an absent minded old man, it is all right, but, in a mayor, it could not be over looked by a righteous public.

Here you have them. The great four. You pays your money and you takes your choice. The cat fignt is 011 and all we democrats can do is to watch it to a fiuish and make note of the foul«

was made. I have not,nor do intend to commit myself on any subject except that I stand on te ancient democratic doctrine that to the majority belongs the right to rule. No true democrat asks or expects utof-e, and, if I should be so fortunate as to represent Montgomery county in the next general assembly, it will be my ugliest ambition to bow humbly to the will of the majority, regardless of what my individual preference may he on any subject. Such a policy cannot help hut bring the greatest good the greatest number of people. But, on that subject, I desire further to say, let no democrat be deceived. The honored gentlemen whom I have the privilege to oppose in democratic convention, are not so impolitic and indiscrete as to be the authors of that arti-
