the b'ame Hurricane—M»ny Victims at Metropolis, 111.

G. E. JOHNSTON, Courier-Journal. LOUISVIU.K, Ivy., March 2S.—A tornado swept over the southern portion of this city at 9 o'clock last night, wrecking a hundred or more buildings and killing several hundred people. Nearly all wires aro down, and it is almost impossible t,o tret communication with tho outsido world. In ono building blown down, the Falls City llall, a lodge of Knights and Ladies of Honor and a dancing school wero holding meetings. There wero ovor a hundred people the building and very few of them escaped alive. There is scarcely any thing left that would indicate this heap of rubbish had ever been a building, and if any of its inmates escaped it was by nothing less than a miracle. The path of the cyclone was but a square and a half in width.

The cyclone struck Louisville in the southwestern portion and took a northeasterly direction. One citizen saw tho courso of it from Fourteenth and Wal nut to Eleventh and Market streets. From this latter point it followed its course to Seventh and tho river, whoro it loft the city, and, striking across the river, reached JelTersonvillo at tho foot of Spi ing street

Some nine before the cyclone burst in its awful fury on tho doomed city a heavy rain-storm had prevailed. A number of laborers had boon at work near the big depot tho Ohio & Mississippi railroad. hen tho rain began tc fall lieavilv these men took shelter in the big depot belonging to that road. It is not known exactly how many of those men went into tho depot, but it is safo to say the number was not loss than fifty. Tho cyclone struck the huge, but frail building, shattering it as if it was built of cards, and is it not thought ono of the workmen escaped alive.

Tho Lnion depot at tho foot of Seventh street was blown into the river and a train of cars went, Willi the building. Streets aro all blockaded and thero is no wav of getting about. Fires caught all over the city in the dobris and many pcoplo were burned.

Nrcw Ai.liANY, Ind., March A telegraph operator named Arnold, who crossed the river from Louisville late last evening, tells an awful storv of the desolation which lie witnessed 111 a burned walk 111 tne '-"'poitions of tho ruined district where pedostrianism was possible. The dead lay by hundreds 111 the ruined buildings. the wounded in even greater numbers being seen pinned down undor broken timbers, heaps of brick and other wreckage. At ono portion of the devastated district several framo houses had been crushed into a heap, tho wreck taking lire. liogers declares that not less than a dozen people—men, women and childrenwore to be seen fast among tho broken timbers burning to death. The horrified spectator lied from the awful scene, being utterly powerless to render any aid. In tho next street eight frame cottages had been blown flat to tbo ground, and every ono of the people who inhabited them is believed to havo perished.

AY hole rows of brick and frame houses wero to be seen in ruins 011 every hand, and manv thousands of people from portions of the city which had not been devastated were 011 hand doing what little they could to succor the injured and rescue the dead. Ambulances and express wagons by tho score wero being utilized to convey the dead and injured from the ruined district, and every living physician in tho ciLy ivas hard at work giving aid to tho wounded. .IKFKKltSON VIl.LE's GKKAT CALAMITY.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., March 28.—Areport has reached lioro from Clark County. in which Jellersonvillo is situated, that tho city was wrecked by a cyclone Thursday afternoon and that several hundred pcoplo wero killed or injured. Tho brief dispatch conveying this information was sent from Charlestown but 110 ono there could give any details of tho calamity.

A later dispatch places tho number killed thero at between 100 and 200, and says that it is rumored 000 wero killed, but that the report is undoubtedly exaggerated—that .r)00 or (500 people wero injured, many of them fatally. Hundreds of houses fell 111 an instant and carried down th^ occupants to instant death. Leaving Louisville tho storm crossed tho river and began its terrible work at tho river bank, sweeping eastward through a populous portion of tho city, nothing in its path escaping. Hundreds of small buildings and sheds near tho river wore torn to pieces. .Strong buildiiiTs beyond wero lifted from their 1 .nidations and dashed into shapeless 1 un. Churches, schools, stores, dwellings and lactones wore destroyed like so many cob houses and the fragments borne forward bv tho whirlwind.

CALAMITY AT LOUISVILLE. LOUISVIM.E, Ky., March 28.—Shortly after 9 o'clock a tornado swept over this city, wrecking 200 or 300 houses and killing 200 pcoplo. The wind came from the southwest. Thirty-live persons, mostly women and children, have been taken from the rums of Falls City Ilall. It is impossible to get their names. Henry Mason, member of the Legislature from llui.rock County, was it Virgil Wright's c:« ir store lighting a cigar, when the building fell, llo was killed. NOTHING SUCOElilJS LIKE SUCCESS,—r Ims heretofore been a mystery to us why .trangurB aro generally charifoil so extravagantly by hotels 111 large cities. Happening a short time since at the Gait House, corner Sixth and Main streets, Ciuciunati, Ohio, managed by \V. E. Marsh, Jr.. son of the proprietor who established the Gait House fifty years ago, the mystery was solved. The accommodations at the Gait House aro equal in every respect to the best two-dollar per day hotel and yet the charges are only $1.50 per day for mealbaud room single meals thirty-live cents. The Gatt is headciuartars fw the most com plete meals, which, together with free use of the parlor, oflice, check-room, eh ., constitute the greatest bargain obtainable in the city. The solution is easy when the facts are known. Tho Gait is run exclusively in the interest of strangers, tho same rate being charged per day, at all tunes, to everyone. Whatever will produce a reasonable rent for tl properly is the extent of its charges, thus doing away with the usual lesses's profits. Its management is constantly under the immediate and personal control of the owner, W. E. Marsh, Jr. Its employes being paid according to the volume of business, are efficient and reasonable cost. The above peculiarities, a low uniform price, a reasonable rent-charge only, a rigorous and practical supervision of its internal affairs, and co-operative salary payment, have secured for the Gait a fair transient trade, and tbe experiment is a success, producing rent for the real estate. To this benefactor, who has made it possible to stay two day's in the city at the expense of one, we heartily reccommend our friends.
