Pettit Gains Time.
Iu the Circuit Court of Tippecanoe county, Monday afternoon Judge Laugdon made a ruling in the application of W. Fred Pettit for a continuance of his case from the present term of the court, granting the request to the p«t it loner. The court reviewed the points on wl ILII tho application was made, tc wit: 1st, to prove attachment to his wife 2nd, to impeach and contradict Dr. Yeager, and 3rd, to ni'ike an expert examination of the remains of his dead wife. On the litst point the court held that the defendant could go hack fill.her than tho State to show the relations between himself and
his
wife, whether affectionate or
otherwise, and the bearing this might have with committing the crime with which he Is charged. How far back the evidence may be presented cannot now be determined but must depend upon the facts. On the second and third points the court held that the request of the defendant for further time was not unreasonable and he therefore granted the continuance. At the conclusion of the decision Prosecutor Haywood gave notice t'»it he would ask for a continuauce on the trial of Mrs. Whitehead.
Point Against Petit.
The Attica Democrat of last week says in regard to the Petit case: "It comes to the Democrat this week from authority that is pretty reliable that it was only six days after the death of Mrs. Petit that Mr. Petit went, to the residence of Uncle David Meharry and there made a formal request of him for the hand of his daughter, Mrs, Whitehead, in marriage. This was so unexpected, and seemed so outrageously inappropriate that Mr. Meharry could not conceal his auger, and ordered the reverend gentleman off of the premises Whether this visit was made to her father with the knowledge and consent of Mrs. Whitehead is not kuowu, but will he very damaging to the defendant. In all the newspaper comments on this case this visit has never beeu mentioned, but it will be one of the strongest points for conviction brought out iu the trial

WASHINGTON', Feb. 10.—PostmasterGoncral Wanamakcr further expltutieu his postal-telegraph uleas bcJ"*ro the House jiost-olllco commute'1Tuesday, lie thought the Civil-iService Commission shotild control tho sorvieo, and said he would not object to an amendment yiv-

His whole aim in usin^r tlio employes now ensured was to obviato the objections which had been raised that a pu.stul telegraph would take a great deal of money.
President, Chandler, of the Postal Telegraph Company, said that no company could do the worU at tho rates provided in the bill without loss, lie said he was very much in sympathy with the Postmaster-General in his desire to serve the public interests. "We want," he said, "to favor the interests of the Government in overy proper way, but we do not want to soo a Government telegraph established or the beginning of a Government telegraph that will destroy S7,000,000 or §8,000.000 which wo have invested. VV» do not think the Government has a right to do that, and if it has that right we think it would be unjust and very unreasonable to exercise it."
Kepresentative Wade (Mo.) on Tuesday introduced a bill to establish a Government postal telegraph. It appropriates SS,000,000 for the puruoso.

Monday. WASHINOTON, Feb. 19.—The New York delegation in Congress is very much rejoiced over the result of the mass-meeting in Cooper Instituto, and believe that the eo-called compromise between Piatt and Depew will allay the opposition to that measure and insure its passage by tho Legislature. It is useless to dony the fact that tho compromise between Piatt and Depew in New York seriously alters the situation of the world's fair bill, but the Chicago people have no reason to be disheartened. New York comes back into the raci, and the conditions that existed four weeks ago are resumed. Illinois Congressmen all agree that it is now an even fight, notwithstanding tho compromise in New
York, and are willing to take a vote at any time. They rest securely upon the pledges they have received from their fellow-members and expect gains upon the second or third ballot.
An Albany dispatch says that the Senate hold a special session Tuesday night to consider tho report of the conference committee on tho world's fair, but that nothing was done, the amendments not having arrived from Now York. Tho conference committee, however, held a meeting, and finally agreed on roport to be presented to the Legislature to-day, which is signed by all tho members of the conference present.
