MR. KDITOH:— Announce my riamn as a candidate for Shvnff. Huhjoot to tho iWisiou of the douiocraiic nominating convention. MICHAEL ZKLLKHS.

LOCAL POLITICAL COMMENTATOR.

By Cervantes.

1 learn that (itmrne Hutiey will lio a catniiiltittt for iMrcuil jiiilgn "fernenst" Snyder, thu repiibliran, if he can got the nomination from the democracy. Hurlej made a very creditable race six years an", beat inn his opponent over 200 in Montgomery comity. This county is a circuit of itself now, and Hurley, it maybe, thinks lie can sweep the platter, as Parke county is not iu the consideration now. Hut can he make as good a race now as then, is the question? I do not know. Do you? The republican iiiauagers have set up the pins that •Snyder niHst acain make the race for Jud^'e, and I do not suppose he lias any objection to beiug forced iuto it. The office is worth $2,500 per year, aud this i8 more ood money than any attorney at the Montgomery bar is now making. Some think Pete Kennedy would like to take the race for Judge if he could get enough republicans to urge him forward. And now the florid, sanctimonious Coppage is reported as having the Judge's bee buzzing around his ear. All right. It does not require an immense amount of talent now-a-ilays to make a Judge anyhow. The law as elucidaded by most of them, seems to tie a combination of certain lixed rules aud guess woik. By the way there seems to be a wonderful deterioration now iu the bar of Montgomery couuty and that of 25 or 30 years ago. There are no McDonalds, Butlers and Lanes at this bar now, in fact but one or two that I can call up that, in the least, approach them. Talent, in the line of practice, seeuis greatly depreciated. The bar here needs purgiug, revamping and more work by its members and le«s attention to pleasures and sports. Now this recalls the fact that only within the past few months some members of this bar were iudicted and fined for gauiblintr. The reputable members of the bar should hurl such members aside. A lawyer should respect the law, and not violate it. I would hesitate long and well before intrusting important business with any man known togainble. The world ban set at its stamp of disappiovai upon all such men. You need not quote Clay and WebBter as men whs gambled. That does not make the business respectable, honorable, or lead the world to think better ef men |?uilty of this practice. No, the bar here must give more attention to the conduct of its members, or all popular respect for it will soon pass away. Remember as you go along that these are the opinions only of "Cervantes," and you do not have to approve any of then). I use a free lance and you can do the

There is going to be a big scramble for the office of sheriff this year in Montgomery county. ill's strange what numbers of men think they can lill that office. On the republican side we have Shevlin, Humphey, Rich, Cox, Bible i.!i(] how many more prospect I know tt"t. On the democratic side of tho bouse, tnere is Wert, Harper, \iut Smith, Allen, Van Cleave, Williams ami it may be one or two more. With the republican managers, it wiil be arranged that tho "horse's eyes are sot" for Shevlin. It will he found that the four B's Brown, Burford, Brush and Bonnell, are for him, and they, you know, are the spoksmen ami managers of the republican party now, tin* other fellows being mere adjunct. Thia is tho same Shevlin, it should be remembered, that once run a bucket shop in Crawfordsville, ami after that a billiard saloon, and the utterly pious republicans who gage their suffrage propensities by the moral standing of a man should keep Shevlin in view, and some of them will. I want to say to tho opponent of Shevlin, of tho opposite party, on the presumption that ho is the nominee, he will not find him asleep, and will find that he knows as many tricks in politics as a heathen Chinee. Humphrey, who was a andidate when McClaskey was nominated shot off his mouth in volleys too frequent to suit the nominee anil his friends at that time, and they have not forgotten it either, aud lie can continue lo cord uu lumber right along without fear of having official honors heaped upon him IhiB year at least. The four B'h will arrange, it can safely be said, the following ticket: Auditor, Wingate Treasurer, Ramsey Sheriff, Shevlin Representative, Trout. It will again bo a terrible dose for 'he B's to support Ramsey, but they are compelled to do it. They must do it to promote "harmony,"and prevent the dissolution of our glorious Union! They can not down Ramsey in spita of what they may desire, although they would like to awful well. He has a hold In his party that they caunot break. Some democrats and for that matter republicans, too, have peculiar ideas in political matters about candidates and their claims. Some argue because a man lias once held office lie should forever step aside and give way to some unknown quantity. This might do first rate if this were a solid democratic or solid republican county, but it is neither. It therefore stands the democracy, at least, to this year put the winning men forward if they have auy.

Tliis may bo said to be a republican county by a small majority. It very frequently happens that a man who has once acceptably filled office is the best one to again put forward. Oapt. Herron was selected us a candidate tor treasurer five or six years ago, because he was thought to be a winner, although ho had held the office before he run. Goben had been treasurer but ho ran for Auditor and won. He had good runniug qualities. It a man has held office twenty years, give it to him again if lie Is tho only available man to be found. If we, the democrats, had a majority of from 300 to 500 the situation might bo different, and we might say then who should or should not be the candidates. We are not in position to mince about matters. We iiaro not the offices to give. The other party has been doing the donation act for a few years past. Of th« half dozen or more democratic candidates for sheriff and republicans also, there are but two or three of them who hare auy great strength. These will not be specified, of course, for predontial

THE CRAWFORDSVILLE WEEKLY REVIEW

reasons, as I ain uot electioneering for any of them. I would suggest, however, that thu man who is best able to hold his party strength, and secure the largest number from tho opposite side, is the one the convention is looking for. Who is it? I don't know. Do you? 1 would like to see a good strong ticket nominated this year. We did not have it at last election, in fact we bad a number of no accounts politically to vote for. Do not repeat that this season. If our candidates don't work, and work hard, the racs will be a foolish undertaking to them. Polities lias become a science in this country, and, iT you are not thoroughly versed in it, keep out. "Cervantes" is through for the present, but will aim to inject some more of his views on a suffering public ere long.

Protection is What the Farmor Noeds MK. ED'S.: The writer read an article in a republican paper recently, which started out by saying, "protection is what, the f,inner »eeds." Now permit me to say a few words as to the protection tho farmer does need. It is uot a protection iu the way of a tariff tax that the farmer is in need of, but he does certainly need protection, and if he does not soon get it iu some way, many will have to quit the business aud go into some other. Men that have money will uot invest it in farms, aud it seems that they are not to blame for it. The salable values of farms have fallen front one-third to one half In the last few years, and the price of farm products are so very low that very few, if any, of our best farmers can pay the taxes and make a very scant living for their families by working from 12 to 1-i hours a day for several hot months in the year, and this now exists with a high republican protective tariff, which has brought to the farmer a home market for his products, but. is this the kind of a market we want? Iu fact almost any kind of a market would be better than this republican home market. There is no market tor farmers and the price of farm products are so low that it ruins the sale of the farms, but this is protection as claimed by our republican papers. Monied men will not now loau over about i?20 per acre on our best farms, that, only a few years ago, were worth from about $60 to §80 per acre. Many farmers have been dropping behind for several years, until, now, the mon

ey loaners are afraid and require a mortgage instead of a note. The fanners now of our state have their farmers mortgaged for nearly four hundred millions of dollars, and now many farmers are compelled to pay from ten to twenty per cent, for money to pay their taxes. All the money in our banks seems to be loaned out until it is dificult to borrow

even small stuns from them, so the farmer must resort to loan agents for small loans, and they charge an enormous commission and ofteu simply check on the bank for tho money or loan the money of many private individuals aud business meu who refuse to loau directly to the fanner, but give the loan agent a chance to loan the money and charge a large commission which is often divided with the money leuder. So the fanner is gouged by the very men that expect to make a living off oT his trade. Is it any wonder that Crawfordsville has many store rooms and over one hundred vacant dwellings, when the farmers have such treatment from her business men at a time when the life is almost pressed out of them by the republican protection of capital, trusts and monopolies. Farmer.

Active Business.

Business with druggists aud physicians has not been so active and brisk iu many years as it is at this time aud since the first of January. There is a wonderful demand for quinine, which is used in the grippe and influenza malady. So strong is this demand that Ui« price for it all over the country has advanced, and bids fair to go higher yet before there Jis a decrease in the number or cases. Physicians have had a remarkable run of business, and have been kept active day and night attending the calls made on them for professional services, aud Borne of them have made from forty to sixty call per day, One medical gentleman the other day bad fourteen calls made upon him within the space of a half hour. These lacts indicate the great amount of sickness prevailing now iu this vicinitv. cXXf'if
