boon saved by the prompt use of Ayer's Pills. Travelers liy land or aca are liable to constipation or other derangements of the stomach ami bowels wlr.oh, if neglected, lead to serious and often fatal consequences. The most sure means of correcting these evils is the uso of Ayer's Cathartic Pills. The prudent sailing-master would a» soon go to sea without liis chronometer as without a supply of these Pills. Though prompt and energetic in operation, Ayer's Pills leave 110 ill effects they are purely vegetable and sugar-coated the safest medicine for old and young, at homo or abroad. "For eight years I was afflicted with constipation, which at last became so bad that the doctors could do no 1110m for nie. Then 1 bewail to take Ayer's 1'ilU. and soon the bowels recovered their natural and regular action, so that now I .1111 111 *1^

They have been in use in my family for affections requiring a purgative, and have given unvarying satisfaction. We have found them an excellent remedy for colds and light, fevers."— W. 11."Woodson, Fort Worth, Texas.

For several vears have relied moro upon Ayer's Pills than upon anything tflse in "the medicine chest, to regulate my bowels and those of the ship's crew. These Pills are not. severe 111 their action, but do their work thoroughly. 1 have used them with good effect for the cure of rheumatism, kidney troubles, and dyspepsia." ('apt. Mueller, Steamship Felicia, New York City. "I bave found Ayer's Cathartic Pills to be a better family medicine for common use than any other pills within my Knowledge. Thev are not only very effective, but safe and pleasant to take qualities which must make tliem valued by tbe public.'' Jules Ilauel, Perfumer", Philadelphia, Pa.

ers and railroad agents desirous emigration. Here is something, foi Instance, that exhibits the state of atlians now 111 Soutu I'akota: 1-'. Iv l'axion, a well-to-do business man, of sliabbona, lieKalb coiintv, tins state, who has spent some days 111 the alllcled districts, sajs: I '-However hard laud sharks and other intriested parties may try to keep the true state of things irotil the people of this coiintu, tlie.v caniiot long be successful. 1 he siiceessim failure of four ye.ws' crops lias reduced those even formerly well-to-do to a condition of the sorest distress. Manv thousands of families are entirely without means of any kind. '1 hey lack the wherewithal to purchase the necessaries of life for ready cash, while the ominous placard confronts them 111 every st.tre where thev once had credit: "No trust given, (ioods ild for cash only."

Mr. Paxton described the condition of the people in Kingsbury and Minor Countries as simply heart rriiding. In the latter country thev have 110 Hour, tbe stapel of life being a hadlv ground corn meal, and there is a deplorable insutheiency of that. Kvery farm is mortgaged, in many cases for more than a sale under present prices would realize. Most of the st ock has been levied on and sold by the sheriff at public auction, the ridiculously low prices obtained being eloquent, not only of the starving condition of the cattle, but the scarcity of the means in the community. Cows fetching as low as •'?r apiece, horses $- and !?10. while sheep and pigs are smiplv unsalable, (here being nothing to feed tliein with.

TIMIDITY OF TRAVELERS.'

It would appear that there are a remarkable number of cowards to bo found 011 passenger trains that robbers get after. We have rarely heard of any combat taking place between tram robbers and passengers, the latter always submitting to their fate as quietly as possible. The passengers generally out number the robbers seven to one, and often the proportion ta much greater. Very rarely during the palmy days of the James Hrothers, were they ever disturbed 111 their "stand-and-(leliver" schemes, from passengers on railway trams. Last week a large robbery by two men of the express car on a California railway tuok place. The amount taken was ^25,OoO, and the thieves got away safely, not a gun being fired at tliein. From this it is genererally to be concluded that most traveling people are cowards anil would rattier yield to the scoundrels than to make a resistance which, in many instances, would be successful. Train robbers generally seem to he aware of this, ami hence the uniform success that attends their r.iiiK

SELECTING COMMITTEEMEN. In the final work of a political battle'poor committeemen often spoil the best laid plans for achieving a victory. The democracy meet to-day 111 most, of tl (owuships of the county to select coniiiiiUeei!i-ii, who, with the chairman and secretary, will constitute the central couiniitUeeuien of the party for the ensuing two years. Care should tie taken to select tbe best men. They should select men whose fealty to the party and its principles have 'never reasonably been questioned. We certainly can desire 110 man on the committee who will not make earnest and energetic efforts during the campaign to achieve success, no man who may he luki-wann 111 his support of the ticket nominated, no man known 111 the past to have been guilty of "trading" his principles 111 the least, liy nominating a ticket composed of good men with a central committee to push forward the work, our hopes of success can be realized.

lll'.Hilth ii committee 111 Congress an investigation relating to the ballot box forgery case which played such an linportent part ill the Into Ohio election, has been going oil. It developed much of the low tricks and schemes of a few republican politicians in that slate, L-'ora-Ker and lla!siead ainouiig lli.MII, and will only lower them 111 the scale of public eMimation down which 1 hev were rapidly descending. 1'oraker, tno loud mouthed biatheiskite, has had his day. 1 he laM election 111 his stale settled bun, the voters of his party had learned to estimate him correctly, ami they laid linn out at the lirst opportunity, and he is very likely to remain in a recumbent position permanently/Hie ballot box exposition only confirms the opinion previously lormed of this blowing loud mouthed patriot, who made so much ado over the proposed lfturn of the rebel flags three years ago, and Foraker can now take tune to ascertain just what the people tliink of him.

I.iiMi winded and carefully worded communications of this or that candidate for position 011 the democratic State ticket to bo nominated this year, continue to arrive by mail iit this office every week. It is an old cheatnuty style of electioneering, winch these candidates hope and expect us to join in and amplify on them and their peculiar litnes for the position sought. We know little or uolhiug about any ol these candidates and it is certainly somewhat gallish 011 their part to ask strangers to commend them. Our columns are open for paid reading matter notices at 10 cents per line, and to be understood as such. (Jet the nomination and office if you can, but do not ask persons unknown to you to extol you when they know nothing of you, and, in most instances, cure less.

"WITH his new colleague by his side in the Senate, John Sherman will feel grotesquely out of place when he rises to unfurl the bloody shirt iu his old time style, His colleague will bo a soldier—one who, when Sherman was waiting at home for a ficticious riso in whiskey to coin money, was marching to the front with a musket 011 his shoulder to fight for his country, although but a boy. The picture will strike the country as extremely ludicrous.

Twenty-four candidates are already announced in Putnam couuty for the various offices to be filled in that couuty at the next fall election.

NATI UAI, gas may be and doubtless is a nsi fill aiticle, but, at the same time, a very dangerous one if not under perfect control. 'I hey appreciate this 111 full force now at Columbus, Ohio. The gas was lately piped to that city from Lancaster, 111 that state. By some means it exploded and the explosion caused the destruction of two buildings and the loss of life of six persons. It is probable that this is one element of destruction from which no danger need be feared 111 Crawfordsville. The natural gas from our well here, has, thus far, been confined.

At the republican district convention in this city last week, there seemed a somewhat I unanimous disposition among most, of the dellegates from different comities to slight any tiling from Vigo county and not permit it to have its usual hand 111 political matters in the district. A feeling similar to this existed lS8h also among the democratic delegates.

The politicians of both parties, it would seem, are not willing to concede that all trie political wisdom and skill of the district is concentrated in one countv.

IN Vermont and New Hampshire, farms are being advertised for sale at from i?8 to $5 per acre. Farms in this state that sold for 675 per acre a few yeais ago, are now being offered at •'?ir without takers and at the same ratio of decrease, and, unless a radical change is made in the laws of this country, the boy on some of these farms will live to see tbe day when they will he worth little more than are farms 111 the New England States.

INK by one, the inlluential men of the country are falling IU with the tariff reform. Wayne McVeigh, who was a member of Garfield's cabinet, has renounced the protective fallacy urn! is now advocating tariff reform. When a Pennsylvania protectionest, a relative to the Camerons, takes such a step, it is evidence, indeed, that the cause of the people is mighty and will pievail. M.-V

Mrs. Whitehead, indicted jointly with Rev. Pettit on the charge of murdering his wiTe, has been released on $10,000 hail. Mrs. W., like Mrs. Tilton, has doubtless found out by this tune that the matter of being sweet on the hands of preacherc is not profitable if agreeable, and wishes it was some other one now that the newsp ipeis could talk about 111 place of heiseir.

A MAN named Eznian, who murdered a wo. man in Indianapolis lr.st August has been sentenced to be hanged 111 April next. The ri porters of that city are in luck, and hereafter "interviewes with the condemned" may he looked for regularly until the day comes for E/.mau to depart.

Ai'TKK the i.ential Committee is organized for this year's work, candidates will then hegin to make themselves known. Iu answer to inquiry we would say that the charge for announcement of names will he $3.00 and tho money must, accompany the mime 111 eveiy instance.

Tnk election of U. S. Senators should' be left with the people by popular elections. If the money of the candidate obtained him the position, it would have a much greater defusion than now, and being placed in moro hands would do more good.

A Joke on Justice, v-

The ideas of just ice ami lair play as exhibited by tbe republican city officials are at limes decidedly unique. Cases 111 illustration of this are shown lately 111 the treatment of those engaged 111 gambling. Tuck Cirx's place was raided some three weeks ago, a number of well known players caught 111 the room, but on some frivolous excuse they weie let oil without having to pay any fines. A few days aTter a room over Poole's grocery was raided and a number of colored men loiind engaged ill gambling. On some hook or crook hey were liberated, and no lines placed agtinst them. Saturday night late a loom 111 Joel block was entered by Officer (mines and Conner and eight, young men tumid playing cards at rested. 'I hey were all under age, from eighteen to twenty years. 'I hey were fined $21.70 each. Explanation: The first two gangs consisted of men of mature age, who are expected and needed to vote the republican city ticket next May, while the buys arrested on Saturday night are not voters.

This is justice as exhibited around in tho building 011 (iieen street.

Why They Failod.

"The failure of the evangelists lately here at the Y. M. A. hall to create any revival of religious ma'.ters, I attribute," said a preacher the other day, "to the great number of card parties, engaged in what they term progressive elichre. There seems to be a mania just now for card playing in Crawfordsville. *The players are entirely too much absorbed in these games to think anything about their soul's salvation or any of their filends. They should think more of progressive soul training, and let tbe progressive euchre business alono."
