THE CRAWFORDSVILLE WEEKLY REVIEW
Letter From Washingtou.
VASCOUVKR, WASHINGTON, JAN. 6, 1890. Mr. E.Htor: My friends back in Hoosierdom may have some curiosity almut this country, so, after a sileuce of about a year. I open up my storehouse of knowledge and give them a peep at some of its contents.
I suppose they all know that Vancouver is on the Columbia river, in Washington, and just six miles south of Portland, Oregon, •which is on the Willamette river, ten miles above the junction of the two streams.
Ever since coming west, I have sung praises of the mild climate iu this region. Two summers and one winter convinced mo it was seldom hot and never cold. Why, iu December there were ripe raspberries and strawberry plants were blooming.
:But
now
all is chaugi'd, Christinas was warm as a morning in May. New Year saw six inches of mow and the ground froze solid. Rumors were ailoat that ice iu the upper Columbia had broken up and was coming down stream. The morning of the third, our steam boats and steam ferry had disappeared in search of safety in the Willamette, and the Columbia was blockaded with ice.
Vaucouver depends on steamers and a steam ferry that makes connection with the Portland and Vancouver R. R. for communication with the optside world. At one blow our two lines were closed and no mail could come or go.
The next morning a steamer came out of the Willamette and crossed to the Washington side. It was there met by wagons that had goue down six miles to meet it. Mail was put on board and the steamer departed. The Washiucton shore became ice-bound and once more communications were cut otT.
Saturday evening four daring fellows crossed the river on the ice and brought the mail across on'a hand sled. It was a sight to watch the dozens of eager persons crowding the post otflce while the clerks distributed the four^day's mail.
Yesterday was a beauty. The Sun shown brightly, but the air was cold. The blocked ice had frozen solid aud in some places was smooth as glass. At least a hundred people were on the river running, coastiug%nH Bkating. I had no skates, but took a run of about live miles on the ice. I crossed over to the lee of Sham's island where two of the Eiwell boys and some other fellows were skating.
Just before I got there, a little tragedy occurred. Two fellows uamed Pane and Morris were leading a race when the ice gave way and Morris went in. Pane got excited, and, iu trying to help Morris out, broke iu. Tbe other fellows were two hundred yards away. All made a rush for the shore for something to throw to the boy in the water. Perl went to the rescue and Robert Eiwell went for two small sticks near the bank. It was the work of a minute and they reached the scene of the accident. Robert got his man out, but the other fellow was swept under the ice holding like grim death to the stick in Perl Elwood's hand. Robert laid down on the ice and caught Perl's feet, another fellow came up and the tbree stretched upon the ice succeeded in bracing themselves while Paul pulled himself out. They were a half mile from towu, away they went like a Hash for the shore where they were relieved of their skates, giveu dry over coats and started for home. Paul was "out of his head" and cannot now remember a thing on the way home. He came to himself in a warm room, almost frozen to death and with his cloths frozen stiff. Except a slightly frozen foot which Paul carries with "nun as a reminder «f the occasion, they are none the worse for their cold bath. gjAfter returning to the Washingtou side, I accompanied a crowd over two inilesof ice to the P. & V. lauding, then went down stream a mile and crossed over to Vancouver, making a trip of four aud one-half miles. This is a feat of which I little dreamed I would ever perform as it seems impossible for so swift a stream as the Columbia to ever be frozen ever.
There are mountains on every side of us glittering with coatings of ice. The fir forests are leaden with snow, the ground is covered to the deptli of eight inches aud eleighing is all the rage.
The temperature is about 38 degrees above zero and all morning a feathery shower was fall. If I cannot say it is wanner weather I can truly say it is most tbe delightful winter weather I have ever seen. The thermometer has never fallen to zero yet.
Wagons will cross on the ice to-day, aud, uutill the breakup, we will receive rcj, I mails.
We anticipate lively times iu real estate before spring as our town is becoming known aud the natural location is good. Three times more laud was sold in 188(.t tbau had been for ten years before.
John H. Eiwell is our new county clerk. He is a successful officer and gives good satisfaction. What is the matter with CrawfordsvilieV John B. Allen, John L. Wilson, John H, Elwell! If my name was John!

Good Morning!
"Have you been to Ensminger & Seawnght's Grocery lately. I tell you they are bustlers, they do business on business principles. They buy their goods very close and give their customers the benefit of close buying, they haudle the best line of goodB I know of and keep their stock arranged so as to attract attention, and treat all customers alike aud I tell you they are coming right to the front. They pay a little more for produce than the other dealers and that makes them a nice country trade and their city trade can always get freBh produce when they want it, and that's a nice thing itself. They appreciate any person's trade and do all In their power to please them. If I was located iu or near Crawfordsville I would certainly do my trading with those hoys." The nhnve conversation was over heard and we offer it to the people of Montgomery county to investigate and report. You will find this Grocery at
