A Not Very Flattering Opinion. "This City Council," remarked an old citizen, "it the members would draw their salaries and nothing more, would be of vastly more benefit than if they attempted any legislation for the city's good. Many of their movements for a year or more are calculated to injure CrawfordBville and drive' trade and business from it, That cow ordinance was tyrannical aud oppressive, and injured many who are poor in purse and dependent on their cows to help make thein a living. They had to sell their cows in order to conform lo the ordinance, and it is harder, very much so, to keep the wolf from the door than formerly. The taking of the handles from the pumps was a mean piece of business done, I believe, in the interest of the water works company as much as anything else. The Council allowed the opinion of a number oi aUeged "Scientists" to control them in this matter, men who have about as practical knowledge of "Science" as old man Wintou has of landscape painting. I look for results like unto the Iowa election next May here, if any of the present members of the Council come up for re election, and republican as I aui, I would be pleased to see it

A NAMELESS GRAVE.

It Holds All That Remains of Blanche Oougliss, Who Uecaine Notorious Through the .Jennie Cramor Tragedy

Some Years Ago.

CHICAGO, NOV. 18.—Blanche Douglass Is dead. Her demise is but another act In the tragedy which had its inception in the sensational murder in New Haven, Conn., several years ago of Jennie Cramer. The scene of tho last act is laid in one of the lowest of the low brothels in the most sinful quarter of Chicago. Last Thursday morning Blanche Douglass, the notorious witness in tho Malley trial, died after suffering most horrible torture in body and mind. Before she died the Douglass woman tried to tell what she knew about the Jennie Cramer muvder, but she could not speak, and her secret was buried with her in potter's field. She died Thursday, and is now in a nameless grave.

The death of Blanche Douglass closes the only possible means of discovering the truth regarding the murder of Jennie Cramer, for it is not likely 'that the Malley boys will ever say any thing about the matter, even if they know tho truth. They still have hanging over them indictments which werei brought when they were charged with having killed the girl. It is understood that their lawyer is to move in a short time in the New Haven courts that these indictments be quashed.

Jennie Cramer war. tho daughter of a German with small means, who kept a cigar store on Grand street, New Haven. She was remarkably beautiful. Her dead body was found at Savin Rock on August 0, 1SS1. Blanche and both the .Malleys were tried for her murder. but the jury disagreed. James Malley, Jr., is now a coroner in Wilkesbarre, Pa, Walter lives in idleness with his father at New Haven. The story of how James, aided by Walter and Blanche Douglass, ac complished Jennie Cramer's death can easily be recalled.

THOSE MORMON OATHS.

Several Elders Appear ag Witnesses, bat Their Memories Prove Faulty.

SALT LAKE CITY, U. T., NOV. 18.—In the Mormon oath cases Saturday in court Wilford Woodruff's prayer at the dedication of St. George's Temple, denouncing tho United States Government and prophesying its destruction was introduced also Orson Pratt's sermon declaring the kingdom of God to be the only legal government on earth and all others un authorized, and the case rested. Ths defense introduced Apostle John Henry Smith, who swore that no disloyal oaths were administered. The injunction to avengethe blood of the prophets was general, and did not apply to Jo seph and Hyram. Smith more than too thers. When pressed regarding the throat-cutting and disemboweling penalties, he refused to answer. When he professed obcdience to the laws he was asked if he had obeyed the law against polygamy, and declined to answer. Elder Clark, also for the defense, didn't re member any thin# bad in the endow' ment oaths or declined to answer.
