THE CRAWFORDSVILLE

BY HETTIE A. MA11T1N.

'Tla a beautiful night, nncl with enlm dolight, 1 gnze on the glorious sceno Tho sun goes to rest 'neatli tlio crimsoning west,

And loaves mo to ponder and dream.

All glowing nnd bright, tlio lnndscnpo In sight. As far as my vision extends. Is tinged with the gleams of his glowing beams, 'Kro bohind the green hill ho descends.

Tlio bright happy hours have fled to tholr bowors Till now the stern past has the day. And twilight comes down over country and town,

Wrapping each In Its mantle of gray.

And now as 1 gnzo on the purpling liazo, Of night dotted o'or with each star. Bright Venus, the queen of night's regal scono,

Appoars In the lioavons afar.

To my entranced ear, as 1 wouderiug hear, Are wafted melodious strains, As Angelic choirs with glittering lyros

Were treading tho glittering plains.

Even so then I thought when life's work is wrought. And tho sunsot of life appears,, 'Twill bo tinged with thogleamsof hope's goldon beams.

To brighten tho last of our yoars.

When life'p evening sky appears to our ey«. And the mantle of twilight descends, If 'tis wovou all o'er with good deeds dono before,

Wo will welcome it then as a friend.

And, oh! may tho lyres of angelic choirs, King sweetly to cheor us tho while. As wo cross tho dark river forever and ever,

To dwoll In tho light of God's smile.

WAYNBTOWS,

Harry Ramshrook, of CrawfordBVille, will play with our hand at the soldiers reunion held here next week.

The case agailist R. S. Osburn, in the U. S. court, was nolled Sept. 5th, and without notifying his attorneys or the defendant. There seems to be something very peculiar in this prosecution and termination and if they had been men, they boast of being, they would have pushed the case to a bitter end or never begun it.

The soldiers reunion to be held here next Wednesday and Thursday promises to be a grand affair. Several members of the Rockville artillery have signified their intention of being present and the programme arranged will be worth seeing. The old and the young soldiers will be 111 camp Wednesday night and hold an old fashioned camp fire. Excursion rates have been secured and wejlook for the largest crowd ever seen in Wednesday.

Mrs. Win. Philipps died at the family residence on Tuesday uight. She w.as one of the oldest residents of tho town. Her husband ran the Philipp's Inn, a hotel on the road known as the state road when this town was but a vil lage and for a number of years carried the mail from this city, before the I. B. & W. Ry., was built. Mrs. Philipps had mauy friends who mourn her death, but nature had done its work as she had lived a loug and useful life. -t

COUNTY SCHOOL NOTES.

Al. Henry teaches at New Richmoud this year. Prof. Ewing and wife have charge of the Linden schools for the ensuing year, commencing Oct. 7th.

W. T. Sharp has resigned his position as a teacher at Longview. Mr. Kennedy has been selected for the place.

At the examination on Aug. 31st four persons secured license for two years, twelve for one year, one for six months, aad fourteen failed to pass the examination.

The schools of Franklin township began on Monday. The schools I11 that township did not receive the new books in time aud used the old ones this week, but next week will be fully supplied with the uew Indiana series of school books.

Not quite 50 per cent, of the children of school age attended school last year. An effort will be made by teachers, directors and trustees this year to have a larger attendance of scholars than last if possible. If they fail the County Superintendent will aim to get in some work for the same purpose. Union, Franklin, Clark, Scott, Brown, Walnut, Ladoga, Waveland and Crawfordsville schools began on Monday.

More attention than usual is to be paid to the reading circle feature of the schools in this county. A circular lately issued regarding this says: "In some counties, township trustees have placed a complete set of the books in each school where they have been used as a circulating library. In other instances enterprising teachers have raised funds by entertainments and in other ways and bought the books for their schools. Thousands of chiliren have bought their own books and read them with the enhanced interest and profit which a sense of ownership gives. Different plans are suited to different localities, but enterprising teachers will find

A pound can of each powder was taken, the total leavenins power or volume in each can calculated, the result being as indicated. This practical test for worth by Prof. Schedler only proves what every observant consumer of the Royal Baking Powder knows by practical experience, that, while it costs a few cents per pound more than ordinary kinds, it is far more economical, besides affording the advantage of better work. A single trial of the Royal Baking Powder will convince any fair minded person of these facts.

While the diagram shows some of tho alum powders to be of a comparatively high degree of strength, it is not to be taken as indicating that they have any value. All alum powders, no matter how high their strength, are to he avoided as dangerou*
