Some people went to the fair at Lafayette from here. Some sickness around and yet the doctors are not happy.
W. B. Montgomery is talking of building an elevator at Corwm. Since the Mouon has taken off the fruit train it is not quite so handy.
Esq. Galbreth and wifo visited friends in Lafayette over Sunday. J. H. Bowman now has the post office here and is assisted by Mit Rush.
Stephen Gates, the station agent here, is at West Baden springs for his health. Harter and McClain are the men who will build the new dwelling for J. W. Galbreth.
James Foster will leave the farm of Will Duukle and farm some place else next spring. Mr. Evert Britton, of New Richmond, was in our place on last Saturday looking hale and hearty.
The Clover Leaf company is running a good many freight trains of late as their trade is on the increase.
Dwelling houses in this place ate in great demand as people are coming here every few days hunting houses.
Tom Keeper, the man who has bailed and shipped so much straw out of our country has moved to RosBville, Ind.
People should be very careful about fires as a spark will ignite and cause a heavy loss of property when it is so dry.
It is reported that the reunion at Stockwell last Saturday was a grand success. Our band furnished them wish music.
The new dwelling of Henry Dunkle has just been painted up in style and J. K. Parker was the artist that handled the brush.
The Michigan City excursion on last Thursday was well patronized at this pr int. There were 37 tickets sold at this office.
The weather has been so dry that strawberries which have just been set out have sufrered and many have died from the want of rain.
Some of our boys are passing the time away by playing old sledge or seven up. They had much better be getting an education and learn to be useful.
It is expected that some of these days there will be a funeral here as the boys still get on moving trains. Boys take warning in time to save your lives. ,*
The water melons that comejto our market look as though they had been pulled a long and are no doubt tough. There is at least one shake to every mellon. *?§•'""v
It turns out that J. K. Parker is a painter, a brick Mason, a plasterer and carpenter, as well as a farmer and lumber dealer. Such men are few and hard to find.
Life insurance agents have marked up this territory until there is but few that will take risks any more in the straight line companies as they are costly concerns.
Milo Tomlinson met with an accident on last Saturday morning. He attempted to draw a cartridge from his revolver and got the end of one of his fingers shot off.
Two sets of weil drivers commenced to go down for water on the Clover Leaf last Monday. One well is to suDply the stock yards and the other the water tank.
On Thursday of last week John Reese, of Montmorenci, and John Lee. of Lafavetta, both carpenters, caine to our place to look after a job but left without bidding
If the katydid sign is correct about frost there is very little corn out of the way and it will be nipped should frost come soon. We hope that the sign will fail this time. 1
Dick Utterback, formerly of Wayne township, but now from near Michigan City, was in our midst last week having been on a. visit to his father,' uncle Harmon Utterback.
It does not take a forked peach tree limb to tell 0. D. Thomas where to find water. All he does is to look around and tell the men where to bore and they find water about where he says.
Some boys yet in tfieir teens go around with a cigar in their mouth nearly half of their time. I wonder if their parents know that it is a violation of law to sell them cigars when they are under sixteen years of age.
Frank Wright, who is doing extra work for the two railroads here during the absence of the agent received two telegrams from his wife who is sick at Battle Ground. J. H. Bowman came and relieved him for a few days.
In one of it's letters last week the Journal says that 0. D. Thomas has sold out and will either go into the hardware business or will go on the road. Mr. Thomas says he will not go on the road unless he can carry pills to sell to his customers.
J. S. Bennett is expecting to start' out with something new in the way of insurance. It is not old line or is it a death rattle, but a new plan of life and accident, and none but the healthy can get there, The supplies are expected daily.
People wishing good reliable insurance in
tornado, fire, life or accident companies, would do well by calling on our agent here. His companies are solid and there Is no wild cat about them. Give the old man some show and do not be led off bv strangers that you do not know.

Mrs. Silas Hendricks was in Martinsville over Sunday, attending the funeral of a relative. A1 iyo came home from Illinois last week and brought a handsome young wife with him.
The 63rd boys are putting in much time preparing for their grand reunion, Sept. 25th and 26th.
Misses Carrie Thompson and Aggie Kelley attended the teachers' institute at Crawfordsville Wednesday.
Our cornet band practices each night and will furnish some excellent music for the soldiers' reuuion.
The town couucil has raised the liquor license to $250 and the question that is now being discussed is whether or not it is legal.
Dr. J. P. Russell, of Wavelaud, delivered several of his poeins to an appreciative audience at the Christiau church, Tuesday evening.
Mrs. Ollie Mattick and Miss Ollle Biddle returned to their home in Indianapolis last week after having made a pleasant visit at Andy Biddie's.
The gravel road has the town penned in, as there is a toll gate at each end. But that does not catch anyone that wants to come here to trade.
Nothing has been heard from John Fireball, who sold Frank^Hallowell a load of wheat belonging to John Mitchell, and Mr. Mitchell will have to lose the money.
Rev. Fuson united in marriage, last Sunday, Charles Wingert, of Whitesville, and Miss May Follick, of this place at the residence of the bride's parents. The young couple left for their new home at Whitesville, Monday.
Touchers' Institute.
The county institute convened on Monday iu the large room of the court house, Supt. Zuck in the chair, and A. N, Higgins, secretary. Profs. Warfel, Harwood, Ginn and other educators have beeu present most of the session. The following are the committees:

The exercises this year have been of considerable interest to the teachers in attendance, and everything has moved along satisfactorily. The attendance has averaged from 130 to 150 teachers. The institute closed last night and the teachers departed for their homes.
Cutting Affray.
Scott Smith is a colored individual who occasionly drops into Crawfordsville providing there are no police officers at the depot when the freight trains come iu. He has been here this week and as he always does he got into trouble. He filled up on the fighting kind of whiskey and proceeded to carve Grant Goodnight, at the Monon depot Monday night cutting his coat in several places and a deep gash in his cheek. Ho performed the usual act of leaving for parts unknown as soon as the trouble was ended.

Elmer Henry, a young man that works for Truitt fc Scott in the bakery, was relieved of a fine gold watch, chain and charm, Monday night. He boards at the Long house and was in his room that night. A guest of the house that had only arrived in the city Monday evening departed during the night and it is thought he was the thief. Mr. Heury valued the stolen jewelry at $65, and as the watch was a gift, he feels the loss greatly. No trace of the thief can be found.
