Mr. Craig was something over 60 years old, and had resided in this county most of his life, mostly in Franklin township, removing to this city near two years ago to rest the remainder of his days and enjoy the well-earned competence of a lire of industry. He it thought to have inherited some traits of insanity, as some ten years ago he wns observed for a short time to be somewhat demented. Some seven years ago a son of his committed suicide at the home iu Franklin township by shooting himself. Of tho family, a wife and six children survive, most of whom reside in this county. ,® Hold Over Clerk*.

Some good stories are croppiug out about the frantic efforts of the Republican clerks in the departments who served through the Cleveland administration to curry favor with the new powers, Bays a Washington special. The man Baxter, who was caught with letters on file reccouynending him as both a good democrat ami a staunch republican, and who had his salary reduced $1,000 a year, has not had the manliness to resign. He holds to his little job amid the derision of all hiR fellows. Now another pension office clerk is in a similar predicament Anxious to win favor with Com uussioner Tanner, he wrote a letter to the coin ini3sioner claiming to be a good republican and inclosing a recipt for his contribution ot $10 to last rail's campaign fund. The check-

The Disciples of Christ will hold a mass meeting in Frazier's grove, south of Hillsboro, Iud., commencing Friday, August 16th, and lasting over two Sundays. A tabernacle 56 by 75 feet is being erected for the occasion. Eld. J. F. Roe. of Cincinnati, Ohio, Eld. J. W. Perkins, of Indianapolis, Iudiana, Eld. A. Elmore, of Frankfort, Ind., and other leading preachers will be present to preach to the people. The disciples of Fountain and adjoining counties, with their friends are iuvited.

The republican members of congress from the south are very much out with the administration aud threaten to make one of their number speaker of the house. Judge Houk, of Tennessee, is an old and experienced member of the house and he may become a formidable candidate for speaker. His friends say the administration has treated hiin worse than it could have done bad he been a democrat, aud that lie Intends asserting himself by becoming a candidate for speaker. If Houk, Taylor, Ewart, Brower, Cheatham, Coleman and four or five oth rs from the southern or border States join bauds and stand together they can master the situation and orgauize tho house. It is a prize worth fighting for and Messrs. Reed, Mc-

Kinley, Burrows, Cauuon and Henderson may find all their hopes and calculations blasted by these men whom the president bas treated with so much disdain. An independent revolt against Harrison and a staud for the speakership would set the whole republican party by the ears.

signed "W. H. Barnuin." When Tanner saw this he sent for the man and asked for an explanation. The explanation was that while he had contributed $10 to the republican fund his wife, who was a devoted admirer of Mrs Cleveland, had sent a like sum to the demo cratic committee. By mistake he had enclosed the wrong receipt. The poor fellow plead ed hard for mercy, and is still hard at work in the pension office. It is Baid that this method of catching the coon a comin or agwine was worked by many anxious government employes last fall. A small contribution to both campaign funds, with a receipt from each, armed them with an argument for retention, no matter how the election resulted.

Starving IIIIIH'IH Miners.

CHICAGO, .July 81.—Congressmen Lawler and other members of the business men's relief committee left this niurtiiiig with additional supplies for the half-starved, locked-out coal miners at Streator, 111. A reporter talked with

chronicle the third, Robert Craig having killed Geerahty, whose business in Streator has himself last Tuesday about 11 a 111, by hanging, in the stable attached to his properly 011 west Main-st. At noon his wife went to the stable to call liiin to dinner, when looking up in the loft she saw his body suspended by a cotton rope, which ho had tied to two rafters. He had fixed a noose ill the rope and fittiug it to his neck jumped from an upright beam near by toward the lloor. His feet were not over afoot from the ground, and how long ho bad been hanging is not known, but about an hour, It is thought. The cause of suicide in all cases is generally a matter of surmise unless the victim leaves word behind. Mr. Craig was a quiet, honest, pleasant old gentleman, and had no enmity toward anyone, was not involved financially to aniouut to anything. He was the owner of a valuable farm in Franklin township, the large, commodious residence on west Main-st. where he resided, was possessed of other property and was worth $40,000 or more, with no incumbrances worth mentioning.

be-11 w» ilniirh ruined by the miners' troubles. Mr. (jeerahty has been in Milwaukee for some days soliciting relief. MVe have two car loads of provisions to distribute to-day," said Mr. Geerahty, "but what will that amount to when divided among 8,000 starving miners, the majority of whom are married men with families? It will scarcely last two days for the poor fellows. The condition of the men is almost indescribable. I can truthfully say that many people are actually starving. The babies and children cry for bread and wallow in the muddy streets, but their mothers have become callous to their cries and do not mind. They say but little and complaints are infrequent. They just keep silent in their misery. A few are very proud and affect to bo light hearted when they have not a thing to eat iu the house. I tell you it is horrible, and no one can realize the awful sufferings until he gets right into the midst of the misery. Business has gone to smash and stagnation rules everywhere."

When asked atmut the Indiana Inw, which prohibits any gas being run out of the state, Mr. Elkins said: "Oh we're going to have that declared unconstitutional.
