On Monday evening ''m streets presented quite ail animaied appearance. Tho druin corps favored tin popelation with few seleclions of clioic nnisic and when a sufficient crowd had been gathered they were conducted to the court room where as per arrangements, mass met'ting was to meet. A. F. Ramsey called tho mass to order in his musical lii-ss voice and selected Judge Snyder to do tho president act. The Judge stalled the bull to rolling by remarking th..t this congregation had congregated for the purpose of hearing the opinion of our most prominent citizens 011 tho free gravel road question and that the public ear was now open for a full expression on tho subject. The program had previously been arranged in the matter of speakers and the first on the list win Judge Uritton. He said he had leard quite a number of citizens both in and ml of Crawfordsville express opinions on tho subject and as far as he was able to ascertain the public sentiment inclined to free gravel roads. Some seemed to think that the roads were assessed too high, that it would be unjust to the widows and orphans who had their land mortgaged now for about all their value and more llub-dub argument of the saiue variety calculated to bring a tear but uot to make a point. These sauio people however said the buildiug of gravel roads now free was bad policy, although they had to come previously ten miles aud more through the mud, cook their meals on the way and be ferried across tho mud holes confronting them at every turn.
They now acknowledge that the free gravel roads running past their farms are a blessing and thus confute their own argumeuts on the question. Some say they cap't afford to keep the roads iu repair although they pay enough toll to do it several times over, Some iu the city are opposed to the idea on the grounds it is too expensive and accordingly a "bad policy." They said the same thing when we talked of haviug gas, of introducing a water plant a*jd of lightiug the streets with electricity, but acknowledge now that tho price compared to the beuefit is small. They are now saying the same thing about free gravel roads and about the cutting up of the streets for the introduction of a street car Hue, but that if both these blessings are forced upon them they will see their mistake and be the first to say we told you so. 'Squire Wright was the next to express an opinion. He said that now upon careful olservatiou it will be found that two travel the free gravel roads where only one travels the toll roads. People who have eggs, butter and other marketable produce to sell in the city, prefer rather than pay the price of the eggs for the privilege of selling them to let them rot and raise their smell to heaven to protest against the outrage. Four years ago the legislature passed a law requiring that before this could be acted upon that the consent of a majority of the people Iiviug on both sides of the road for a distauce of two miles be required, but now we have the question squarely before us and that the opportunity should be improved.
51. \V. Hruner was the next attraction on the bill. He rose iu his might, and as Hoyle says "smoie the qtestion fairly iu the eye." There has been considerable difficulty iu gettiug this great problem before the common intellect AMI the
d.MiiiiiiriJ Illicitae!
Gen. Manson was next called ou, but did not respond, as there was no telephone present and the (ien. was absent.
Col. John Lee next stepped blithely forward and shouted as follows: "I have been absent for a long time, but it gives me much joy to be with you again and toot aloud ou this great question. I can remember when Crawfordsville was but a little boy. We had no court house then, 110 brick buildings, no electric lights, no water works, uo gas, aud some prosnects of a railroad. We have 'em all now, aud as the gas illuminates our stores, aud the electric light Hashes its glim orer the highway, aud as the brick buildings tower skyward, aud as the water works squirts its gay aud festive stream, aud as the steam engines come thundering iu and out of our depots, bringing wealth in and taking wealth out, it seems like a warning to go forth and do likewise, that is, vote for free gravel roads. Wo spent then §100,(XX) ror a railroad and Montgomery county is ten times better off to-day. Make your roads free, thereby making Montgomery county the best in the State of Indiana."
Judge Snyder stated majestically through his beard that what was a benefit to Montgomery county was a benefit to avery citizen in the county, aud for that reason every man, woman and child should yell "Hurrah for free gravel roads."
Judge Sellars made the darling little speech, though. It warbled upwards through his porteutious collar over his windpipe and onto the atmosphere as gracefully as ice cream into the refrigerator of a lireencastle girl 011 show day. Ho was very generous in his offers, said he did not know where his uext nickel was coining from to buy a glass of pop to cool his frame, but in the interest of humanity at large he was willing that all his relatives should be taxed iu order to get free gravel roads. Such generosity was worthy a republican wire puller who leaves all to accept au office, and called forth much applause.
Tho evening's entertainment was finally ended by John H. Hurrord, our talented young legal light. He spoke from the overlooking pinnacle of tho law and said that the cost of the litigation over these roads was more than enough to pay their price. Thus ended oue of our most interesting business moeliugs, and the crowd stepped out into the open air again, wiser and better people, determined to fight through every difficulty for the benefit of the starving widows and orphans who daily cry for bread aud free gravel roads.
l)o Not Think for a Moment that catarrh iu time will wear out. The theory is false. Meu try to believe it because it would be pleasaut if true, but it is uot, as all know. Do not let an acute attack of cold in the bead remain long uusubdued. It is liable to develop into catarrh. You can rid yourself of the cold and avoid all chance of catarrh by using Dr. Sage's Catarrh remedy. If already afllcted rid yourself of this troublesome disease speedily by the same means. quick and much as it probably would'ent have another chance to settle the question soon again, if again at all. He was oue of those who wrote the petition to the board and was therefore particularly interested. Whatever is a benefit to the township is a benefit to the city and vice versa, therefore every patriotic Crawfordsville legal voter 21 years of age should cotne out of his den and shove his ballot aye or nay, chiefly aye.
