VutliiK F.ir Toll HUIIIIK. (Communication.)

What profit will it be to Crawfordsville to tax ber citizens for the purchase of these roads? The market for all the products of the farm is equally as high in the surrounding villages as it is in Crawfordsville. The foreign market controls the prices both in Crawfordsville aud the surroundiug country villages, and there is no competition in railroad freights to enable buyers in Crawfordsville to pay more than the village cau pay. These villages have facilities for handling all products now fully established ami the little diminution of the tolls cannot possibly divert the trade to such an extent as to benefit the common tax payers of Crasvfordsville.

The trade «nd business of the country is ex-

1

tensively diverted, and the facilities to reach I Iudianapolis by means of the numerous railroads causes all the heavier purchases of goods to be made there. Cheap rate excursions take hundreds of people from this county to that city aud thousands of dollars are paid out there every year for goods thatmight be purchased in

Crawfordsville. And the voter should ask himself whether the additional tax he places to his account will in any way compensate him in the improved business of Crawfordsville. Will it cause manufactories to be built here? NVill it cause the city to build more houses more business rooms give more employment to labor pay better wages and enable laborers to buy more of the necessaries of life? The voter perhaps never pays a ceut of toll, because he has 110 business along the tall roads, but let him vote the tax and it will find him for many cents or dollars. Will it cause his food supply to be reduced, his expense of coal, or wood, or flour, or meat, or groceries? These are all regulated by causes independent of the toll roads. Minneapolis sets the price of his flour, and with wheat at 65c he pays St for flour. A coal syndicate prices bis fuel. A sugar trust and a coffee trust fell him what be has to pay for these articles, aud a British syndicate puts the price of cattle so low that farmers are growing them at a loss, while Armour tells what dressed beef must bring. Now let the voter look a little at these facts and not be persuaded, like the miners of Brazil, to vote against bis own interests in anticipation of some great prospective good that might grow out of it. Tax yourselves, if you desiro to, but do so with your eyes open.

But I must not be unmindful of the farmer who votes to tax himself to purchase these roads, looking forward to the happy day when he can drive to Crawfordsville with a sack of potatoes or a few dozen eggs and not have the toll required all the time. He drives about from Btreet to street, looking for some place to hitch his team while he aud his wife do a little shopping. On nearly every shade tree he sees the notice, "§5 tine for hitching on this street.'' Now what must he do? He must sit in his wagon, hold his horses till his wife barters off her little marketing to some commission house or grocer, while she aud her husband are forbidden to sell on the street to consumers without taking out a license to peddle, at $3 per day.

Now let him vote to'tax himself with his eyes open, or go home a,nd sell his littlo marketing at the village store where it can be put on the next train and sent to some of the largo cities for consumption.

Every old citizen in the county knows bow inducements are held out and what encouragement is given to establish manufacturing interests in the city, so as to increase the population and consequent demand for the products of the county. Witness the Brown plow factory that started under favorable circumstances. But in a little while every man who was engaged in the sale of farm implements filled his house with plows from Moline, Cincinnati, Hamilton and South Bend, and the homo manufactory of Brown As Co. was snowed under. How many men did Miller & Bro., Doherty & Dighton aud Smith & Bonnel employ in making carriages and wagons, but they have all goue to the shade aud their bouses are filled with goods from some other place, aud a few clerks aud runners are all that are needed. Curtis Bros., aud then Josliu, tried tho boot and shoe business, but were soon swamped.

This is the way Crawfordsville encourages a home market and if the farmer has a surplus of his products he has to sell at Liverpool prices, hut if his products are of a perishable nature, such as fruits, his home market is overcrowded by shipping in the same kind of goods from other points. This practice, both with dealers aud consumer'' cau have but one result, simply to close the business like tho above named factories. Take your choice, vote to tax yourselves aud then wait to see where the fun conies in.
