A man with a petition with several scores of names soliciting the appointment of cattle inspector was circulating it for more signitures last week.
Most of those absent for 4tli of July visits have returned and consider that they would have enjoyed themselves just about as well to have reniaiued at home.
Most of the stores of all kinds will close hereafter at OJp. in. except on Mondays and Saturdays. This may be a popular move but will give the city a very Sunday like appearance.
Rev. W.IH. Kerr has been appointed district oil Inspector by Ur. U. T. Yaucy whom Gov. Hovey appointed State oil Inspector. We do not know yet whether to congratulate our friend or not.
Mr. Johu)Lane, the gravel road builder, left on Monday for Huntsville, Alabama, to look after a large contract of gravel road building some 73 miles in length, which is to be award ed to the lowest bidder on Monday next.

The farmers are busy in harvest and many of them hate angry words for what they are compelled to pay for twine. The home dealer is uot to blame in this and the only farmer who has aright to say bad words is the one who voted the democratic ticket, -f.
Two meetings have been held lately by a number of the business men of the city aud a regular business men's association formed. All business men of the city are invited to become members. The object is solely in the interest of the city and its business interest.

Mrs. Daniel Hanafan, the Ladoga woman who was taken to the asylum last week, has been sent to the asylum six times since 1872 and when she arrived there she recognized several of the attendants. Poor woman her trouble seems more than one is deserving.
A meeting will be held at Armory Hall next Monday night for the purpose of appointing committees aud transacting other business to perfect nu organization to build a race track aud piruic grounds. The field just north of the O. I. A W. depot, belonging to Howard Edwards will probably be leased for a term of live years and the ground fixed up in lino style There is already 8100 signed and with our wealthiest men in the lead much more will be given in the future. Prof. W. N. Lake began his walk of 412 half miles in 412 consecutive half hours at Rockville last Saturday at 1 a m. He finishes to-day at 3 and will make about the same walk lie did here.
The Hillsboro ball club had a trlaUwitli the Veedersburg club Sunday. The later refused to play when they saw the strong looking club. The game was rightly given to Hillsboro by a score of 9 to 0.
The east-bound passenger train Saturday morning, run into a team of mules driven by'au ignorant fellow, near Clermont. Both of the mules were killed and the wagon smashed to pieces, butjthe only occupant was lucky in uot receiving a scratch.

The Vandalia excursions are growing in popularity every Sunday and will take a large crowd to Lake Maxiukuckee to-morrow. It is the finest place in the state to spend a holidny and no one will regret the trip after making it.
