Nearly $70 was made up yesterday for the families of the miners of Clay county, in this city, by two gentleman from that county authorized to work for that object.

M. E. Clodfelter, of the firm of Clodfelter & Hurley, went io Lake county in the northern part of the state, to attend to important legal business in which the firm is employed.

Tuesday, July 23rd, has been fixed by the commissioners as the day for holding the election for the people of Ripley, Union and Wayne townships to decide whether the turnpikes shall be purchased or not.

The residence of William Gore, of Veedersburg, was partially destroyed by fire Monday night. A gold watch and $85 were taken and they think burglars did the work and then set the house on fire to cover their crime.

If the republicans of Veedersburg, take the post office away from Editor Clark they are a mean set of fellows. That poor unfortunate man is a cripple for life having had a leg amputated only a short time ago and the man who would take this needed advantage from him is too mean too shame the devil.

Lake trains for Maxinkuckee will be run by the Vandalia, June 23d and 80th July 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th August the 4th, 11th, 18th and25th. A somewhat strange fatality would seem to follow the family of young John McCune, who was killed by falling from a freight train upon which he was working on the Motion road near Elliolsville, on WednesJay, His father was a brakeinan on the road and was killed in the discharge of his duties. John was on the tram at the time his father was killed. A brother of the deceased was also a brakeman and was on the train that killed his brother.

Mrs. B. W. Hanna attended the commencement of St. Mary's in the WoodB at Terre Haute this week.

The hack lines got to cutting Wednesday and one line carried passengers to the fair grounds for five cents.

Department Commander Chas. M. Travis reorganized Steele Post, G. A. R., at Rockville, Wednesday night.

Prof. W. N. Lake began a walk at Rockville to day. He will make 412 half miles in 412 half hours. He can do it easily.

George Neilist may not be much of a hunter by profession but he keeps all contracts in furnishing game for his friends.

The O. & W. will sell excursion tickets for oue fare for the round trip to all points on July 3rd and 4th, good returning the 6th.

George Butler, traveling pass. agt. 0.1. & W,, was in the city Wednesday, having come over with the colored picnic excursion.

Ed. Mahorney left Wednesday for Kansas City where he will reside. His many friends here are glad that his health has improved.

Blue Mountain Joe is going through the coun. try making small towns with his band this week while the remainder of his show is at Rockville.

The Rockville artillery is drilling every week and we would not be surprised to see the boys win the championship of the United States this fall.

David C. Greiner has been appointed post master at Terre Haute and Johnnie Reagan invited to step out. Wonder who will be struck in Crawfordsville.

The Seattle Post Intelligencer says, that G. W. Paul, of Indiana, has been admitted to the bar, and that J. E. Humphries and wife have arrived in that city.

A suit has been filed this week by the heirs of the late John Gill!land to set aside the will of Samuel Gilliland. These heirs received but $100, while the estate is valued at over $100,OOO.

All the saloon keepers who take out license will have to pay the city license of $250 and cannot take out license before the ones they have have expired. This is a decision of the Supreme Court in a case taken there by Jack Kelley, of this place.

"If the election was held now the democrats would sweep the whole country," is the remark of scores of people now days, many of whom are republicans and if they think such more advisable why do they not become more resolute and vote the democratic ticket? There is another election coming that is certain.

On Saturday morning last a young man aged about 19 years, whose name we were unable to learn, working on the farm of Jacob Church, two miles south of Howard, Parke county, was found lying dead on the hill, and the only mark found on hiB person was a large welt across his bowels. It is supposed the horses ran off and threw him out of the wagon.—Covington People's Paper.

What a dreadful thing was the Johnstown horror. Dr. Wirt, of Rockville, received a telegram this week from a class-mate who resides there that his home was swept away and his mother and two sisters drowned. The bodies of his two sisters were found but they have no hopes of finding his mother. The dearest person on earth to him will lay in a spot unknown and will fill an unmarked grave.

Wednesday at high noon occurred the marriage of Dr. I. L. Brown, of Alamo, and Miss Mary Remley at the residence of the bride's parents on east Main-st., Rev. T. D. Fyffe performing the ceremony. Only the relatives were present. Dr. Brown has an excellent practice in his chosen Iprofession, is a young man with hosts of friends, and has won a young lady who is his equal in such high esteem. They will reside in Alamo.

The National Supply Company will allow no agents for this county, but persons in the county desiring their goods can obtain them by becoming members.

The Ladoga ball club seems to have no use for a Crawfordsville club. They played a "pickup" nine once and was treated shame: fully but should not judge all the ball players alike.

Over at Lafayette they still want to know who that center fielder was that chased balls for three long hours when our club attempted to play their leaguers. Joe Fosse thinks they' must mean him.

The Thompson & Houston system of electric light for street purposes has been sold by V. Q. Irwin, to the city of Decatur, Adams county. He is also seeking to establish this same system at La Porte, Indiana.

Grant Nixon, a young farmer living in Fountain county, meta thirteen year old daughter of Max Weller, living near Danville, on the road Monday, anii tore her clothes off and beat her unmerctfully. He fled and has not been captured yet.

Mrs. Elizabeth H. Canby, widow of Gen. E. R. Canby, residents of Crawfordsville fifty years ago, and first owners of the land upon which the Central school building stands, died in Indianapolis on Tuesday afternoon. Her remains were interred In Crown Hill cemetery, Indianapolis.

The Commissioners wili probably make the changes in the voting precincts September. There will probably be the following number in the respective townships: Coal Creek, 3 Wayne, 2 Ripley, 2 Brown, 3 Scott,2 Union, 14 Madison, 8 Sugar Creek, 2 Franklin, 3 Walnut, 8 and Clark, 8.

Lake, the walker, when handed a half dollar by a merchant on Monday when on his collecting tour, immediately handed it back Indignantly, supposing probably that he should receive twice that amount. There are few people who refuse to receive money even if it Is as small an amount as a half dollar.

The Williamsport Republioan is our authority for the statement that In John Morgan's pasture in Medina township, Warren county, thirty-one head of cattle were killed toy one stroke of lightening. They were near a wire fence, which carried the current along one side of the field. It was a pretty big loss.

The Journal says a Ripley township farmer calls the little green bugs on the wheat Cleveland, because they are sucking for the tariff. But like all Ripley republicans he Is mistaken. They should be called Harrison, for like hlin they promised to do much but when the sun began to shine they turned their color aud were harmless.

The barn of Mrs. A. Davis, of Brown township, was set on fire and burned ou Friday night or last week. The loss is about $1,200, with no insurance. The tracks of a buggy and horse leading from near the destroyed barn was trailed to Crawfordsville the next morning audit is thought the iuceudiary went from here to engage in his dastardly work, but no one in particular is suspicioned.
