GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESA
JOHNSTOWN, Pa., June 1^. .Sentiment has been permanently supplanted by business hero. It began Monday morning and the most, Heavily stricken citizen, both hi family ami fortune, lias brought himself face to lace with the inevitable, aud in a meeting? of a committee of business men asked General Hastings to erect 100 twostory business.building's on the public square for immediate occupancy. General Hastings promptly replfed 1ih.it he would rush the work night and day aud give them every facility that was in the power of the State and himself to confer. The City Council will meet this afternoon to grant the right to build and work will begin Wednesday. The buildings will last until the buHii.ess men are able to rebuild at their own expense. One hundred houses, ready to pla- upou their foundations, will arrive from Chicago on next Saturday and will all be put up by the middle of next week. General Hastings said Monday night: "We will put all the carpenters to work we can get to building new housos on lots from which buildings were taken by the flood ss soon as the lumber arrives. It will begin to arrive this week, and I think Johnstown will look very much like a city by next full. When the houses are erected I shall furnish the householders with cooking utensils, cots, bedding and the necessary articles to begin with again, and when they are ready they can build better houses."
About 2,500 men are engagjd in the cloaring-up work in the live districts, and the outlying boroughs are beginning to look themselves again. The drift at the bridge was largely reduced Monday. Dynamiting was temporarily suspended on •accouut of complaint from citizens, but was resumed later in the day, but the quantity used in the charges was reduced. The commissary is supplied with sufficient rations for all hands for five day a
