Specimens of oil from the Terre Haute well have been received in the city. It iB the champion oil for a good, square stink if nothing else^ Asafustida would seem a mild perfume compared to it, still we should not disparage other oils, as our oil well may smell fully as bad— when we have one.

Kiu'olliug Officers' Trials.

"I don't see why I should not receive a pension as well as some others, as I saw service during the war that was decidedly trying" said Benjamin Wasson the other day. "I had been appointed eurolling oflicer for the township in Putnam county in which Carpentersvilie is located. The Knights of the Golden Circle were well organized in that locality, and had sworn to have the blood ot any man who undertook to enroll their names for any draft for soldierB that might be made. I paid no attention to threats and one day started out in performance of my duties. While working ou the edge of the town somebody fired at me aud the bullet came whizzing past in front of me. It certainly began to look serious. At another time I went out one day iuto the country about three miles to enroll the names of a uuiuber of persons in a thickly settled neighborhood. I could find no men whatever at any house. Au old lady quietly informed nip that there was a meeting of the Knights at that hour uer.r by atid that all the men were there. It was to determine whether or uot the draft should be resisted. I approached their place of meeting just as it was adjourniug. A few of them told me to go ahead and enroll their names, though from the omiuous glances cast at ine I could see that uiauy ot them would take pleasure in euding my existence then and there. I proceeded without trouble aud enrolled all the names and was never bothered after that. Mauy of these men are yet living at and near Carpeutersville and are to-day my warmest friends."

Suicide by the Hope.

As Mr. Gluts. Fraley was coming along the road iu a wagon three miles aud a half southeast of Linden, on Monday forenoon, when opposite the Oakland school house he observed a team hitched lo the fence with no owner apparently iu sight. Getting up erect in his wagon and looking directly toward the school house he noticed a man suspended by a rope from a tree within eight feet of the building—dead. His body was warm and the deed had probably uot been committed over a half hour before. Upou inquiry it was boou ascertained that the body was that of James I. Slavins, a fanner liviug one mile east of Linden. His age was about G5 years. He had frequently exhibited fits of melancholy, aud probably had in his mental wanderings considered that it was best for him to go hence. A coroner's luquest was held ou Monday afternoon, the verdictof which was death at his own hands. He was hurried on Tuesday.

Poor Children's sumliiy School. Sweet strains of vocal music accompanied by the soft notes of a cornet, issuing from the small courtroom every Suuday morning, attract the attention of many people. A poor children's Sunday school is in progress. It was established some months ago by a number of Christian ladies of the city and now has a fair attendance. The scholars are not requested to appear in broadcloth and fiue linen, as seems to be the requisite in many other places, and consequent' ly the school will become popular and be the means of shedding a wholesome influence over them hereafter. The music is unusually good and will attract the attention of the little ones at all times, and will doubtless be of benefit to them.

GENTLEMEN—I have been a sufferer from nervous headache for twenty years and owing to a general enfeebled condition of my nervous system I was continually tired, worn out and able to accomplish but little each day. My sleep is sound aud my general health is better than for years previous to its use. It has proven a great relief to me in eradicating the bearing down pains and backaches so general aud peculiar to my sex. I shall continue to reeoinmend it to my neighbors aud acquaintances, and hope to always have it in my house. Auy lady wishing to tegt the authenticity of this letter can do so by writing to me.
