A Terrible Tragedy.
Through the kindness and enterprise of the Attica Lodger, A. L. Peacock'svaluable paper, we obtaiued the following account of a terrible tragedy in that city last Saturday night: At half-past eight o'clock Saturday evening the report was circulated that a double tragedy had been enacted in the northeast Dart of the city—that Simon Houts had killed his wife and himself. The report was so startling that there were few to believe It. A Ledger reporter immediately set out and when he reached the bouse there were only a dozen neighbors there and they quickly corroborated the report. Entering the house the reporter found a large front room and to the left a small bed-rooin. On abed In the latterly the husband and wife, crosswise, and both dead, though their bodies were still wann and life had been gone but a few minutes. Mrs. Houts was lying at the foot with her face buried in the bed, and he squarely on his back, the feet of both hanging over and nearly touching the floor. Turning the covers down a horrible sight was pre8 ted. The bedding was saturated with bloc and the countenances were ghastly to look upon. There were three wounds on the body of Mrs. Houts—one directly under the left shoul-der-blade(shot from the rear) one through the heart(shot from the front) and one through the fleshy part of the left hand. To take his pwn life the husband had made but one shot and that a sure one—through the heart. By his side lay an English Bull-dog revolver, 88calibre, with four chambers empty. His position showed that he died without a struggle, the only movement he made being the throwing back of his head. The position of Kis wife indicates that she made an attempt at defense.
The probability is that at the first shot she attempted'to grab the revolver and received the ball In her hand. He then undoubtedly .fired the shot through her heart and she fell over on her face. To make sure of her death, he fired as she lay, the ball entering the back.
Less than an hour before the tragedy Simon and his wife were both down in tbe city. He stopped at Sattely's grocery and bought some candy, stopping long enough to pass a joke and give the impression that be was in the beat of spirits.
After arriving at home they prepared for bed both donning their night clothes. They had at home five children, the oldest being 13 years of age. They had all been put to bed, but when the firing commenced the oldest one ran to John Point's with the information that he "believed papa had killed mama." W. L. Turman, who was going home, heard the shots and appearad at Point's house as the boy came. The two men immediately went to the house and soon after Marshal Beamer, Mayor Moore and Prosecutor Reid were notified and after viewing the remains, took charge of affairs.
The cause of the tragedy is not known, though it is believed to have been infidelity. About a year ago the couple had trouble and a divorce was talked of, but the difficulties were arraugdd and they soon after moved from their farm in Shawnee township to Attica. They had been married a number of years, and had eight children, five of whom were at home. He was a quiet, inoffensive man, and one of the last to be thought of in connection with such a tragedy. He was an houest industrious iintu, arid was in favorable circumstances.
A Reminiscence of Gen. Lew Wallace. When I saw Gen. Lew Wallace on upper Broadway, the other day, said a writer in the New York Star, I thought be looked younger as the years advauce. He certainly does not appear so old as he did when he returned from die Turkish mission. I learn that everything is going well with the General. "Ben Hur" still brings bim in a handsome income, and "The Fair God" finds an occasional purchaser. He is writing another novel that is promised to be more popular than any previous work from his pen. Several years ago, before the General had acquired an international fame, he devoted his brilliant talents to painting, and turned out several excellant canvasses for an auieteur. Out of one of these pictures there arose a controversy that was fierce while it lasted, and has been a sourse of amusing recollection ever since. The General painted "Venus Disarming Cupid," and give to the little god a pair of bright purple wings. The artist was forced to defend his choice of color with all the mythological and poetical authorities he had at cosnmnnd. I have forgotten how it ended but I know that the General did not recolor the wings, nor did he admit that lie was wrong.
That is not the kind of a General he is.

I loved her well.

The Value of Pure wine in Sickness. The chief difficulty with reliable wines has been their scarcity and richness in body, but this has been removed by the introduction of a pure native wine, produced by Mr. A. Speer, of New Jersey. Be has submitted his wine to the test of many celebrated physicians and chemists aud all concur in its purity, rich medical properties and superiority to all port wines. Most of them prescribe it In cases,of debility, affections of the kidneys and chronic complaints, requiring a tonic, sudorific or diuretic treatment.—Examiner.

THE ORPHAN'S HOME.-
Rev. B. rayne, Agent and Trustee of the Orphan's Home at Macon, 6a., Writes a Letter Dated
February 5th, 1889.
"I have been using Swift's Specific with the children of the orphan's home under my care with the best results. I began its use between nine and ten years ago, and have seen many remarkable results.
Quite a number of the children had constitutional blood diseases resulting from the sins of the parents and every one of these children were cured of the horrible taint by the use of S. S. S.
There have also been scores of children in the institution whose systems (they having been mostly without the benefits of parental care) were enervated by dirt eating and other foul practices. Every one of these children have taken S. S. ?. and all have signally benefitted by it. All have been cured who have taken enough of it. We have also two inmates of the home, subject to painful recurring atr tacks of erysipelas. Neither one improved under the treaument usual for disease. When ail other medicines was discarded and they took S. S. S. the cure in each case was quick and permanent, for they have been well for five years and there has been no return of the disease. I could tell much mors of the remarkable cures of blood disease by S. S. S., for I have seen it used and know its value,,
