AN'Tl-SAI.OON PETITIONS. Petitions i'.re soon lie circulated till over the couuty, askini: tlio county conitiussioners to hereafter not grant license to those desiring to retail liquor. The intenliou of those originating this move may be and doubtless is all right, but that it will amount to anything wo much question. It needs uo demonstration to the simplest mind to show the effects on any community of the curse of the infernal traffic. Our courts, our poor asylums, our penitentiaries show all this. If there were any maimer by which liquor selling could lie permanently banished from the land how vastly much better in every respect would be the couutry Hud its inhabitants. lhil this state of atltiirs cannot exist. In this state, (he way our laws are regtiliUed, a man desiring to retail liquors who complies with them cannot be prevented. If ho prove good character and pay for his license there is nothing legally to prevent him from engaging in the business, and if refused license in the commissioners'court he can appeal to the higher court and obtain it. This lias been done time and again in this state. Had the laws regulating such matters set out and defined in clear terms what constitutes a good, moral character it would no doubt have been better, and many applicants for license would have at once stood aside. But they do not. The commissioners may at the request of thousands ot petitioners refuse to grant license, yet the applicant, can at once appeal to the circuit cour md secure il. The laws heretofore made regn .,ing the liquor.traffic seem in so many instances to he wait or unconstitutional, and appear of little fo: ce. The intention of the petitioners is to uliL'i'ige, limit or lessen the sale of intoxicants in this comity, and their success in this line is ^et to be seen. We doubt if under their present attempt it will be a success, or only a temporary one at, least.

'i ll.' nuinittee of One Hundred. That committee of one hundred, virtuous, moral and upright citizens of Marion county, which was organized to regulate the morals of the people at elections, seems, since the con viction of Coy and Henihamer, democrats, to have entirely outlived its usefulness and shut up shop entirely. It hail an excellant opportunity to get in some useful work after the indictment of over 100 republicans for crooked work at the election last fall, but failed to use the opportunity and seems to have lapsed from virtuous paths iltogeiher after it saw that two democrats were safely lodged behind the liar.i of the penitentiary, although many of these indicted reptiplicans were without doubt as guilty of as heinous and criminal offenses us were Ooy and Uernhamer and could bate .is ra«ilv been convicted. The committee of onehundred appears to have forgotten all about them, and the indictments through legal quibbles are all quashed. The "couit," (that is what thev call it, for short) appears to have learned of nothing wrong the Dudley "blocks or live" letter, could hear nothing of bribing at the election last fall, of men being paid to rei '.i,,, away from the polls, or having been pai-i ie for this or that person. All this amouiriM io nothing, and the courts must take no cognizance of it. The committee of one hundred can see nothing in the oftoi.ces of these republicans to^nove it to ai.tion. Away with such transparent humbuggery, trickery and partisan meanness. The actions, feelings and opinions ot the ••court" and the committee will deceive no one. The people c.iu unI derstand their actions thoroughly. The committee do not expect to aid in the conviction of I any republicans let his offense be ever sogieat, and was not organized for that purpose. Justice seems decidedly blind just al this time in that respect with that committee and should speedily undergo an operation for the ejes.

THE CRAWFORDSVILLE WEEKLY REVIEW
Very many of the newspapers of both political parties are llagelatiug those Senators who refused to vote for Halstead for confirmation as Miuister to Germany. They seem to go on the principle that the fact that he is an editor I is enough, and that nothing should intervene to prevent his occupancy of the place. There is no reason for this oplniou. Halstead said things about the leaders of his party during the war for which many men less, noted lost their lives. They were considered guilty of treason and were shot, hung or imprisoned. His utterances indicate him to be an unthinking, unreflecting, self-opinated man, whom it would not be safe to trust with so important a mission as that oT Minister to Germany. He would come as near embroiling this country in a war with Germany as any man that could be choseu. He lacks many necessary qualiticationsj even if he is a caustic writer, as his admirers assert. His violent abuse of Logan, Payne, Teller, Ingalls and other Senators, three years or more ago, over the appointing of Payne to the'Senate by the Ohio legislature, was entirely uncalled for, and that these gentlemen have so effectively expressed their opinion of him is entirely natural.
In all the years that may come and go in the life of Halstead ho cannot but feel humiliated over his rejection by the II. S. Senate, and all the "caustic" writing that he may do cannot change the opinion that his defeat under the circumstances was correct and the Senate had maue no mistake.
TIIK .SPOILS.
It
The occasional remark made that the spoils system should be eliminated from politics is very fine to theorize over hut can never do to practice. When you do away with the spoils system you do away with most that constitutes real politics. The ablest meu of all parties that this country has ever produced were politicians. autl lived upon the spoils or rewards given them for their labor in the political field. Cleveland, Bayard, Voorhees, Pendleton and all the prominent democrats now living, worked for, expected and received the spoils Harrison, Sherman, Blaine, and all the republican leaders of the period, worked for the spoils to be won iu the event of party success, aud are now getting them. So it has been in the past and will be in the future. The idea of men spending their time and money in politics for the simple glory of the thing is boyish talk. Politicians are not constructed to that pattern. They work for reward—for the m^ney in it, and care not for civil service prattle. Yon cannot have political parties without leaders any more than an army without generals, and these leaders expect and will receive rewards incident to victory whenever it may come.
OSK of those old chestnuts, resolutions of condolence, appeared by oversight in our columns the other day. "Wo do not desire any such contributions at all, unless they are to appear as paid advertisements, and hereafter when a member of a Masonic, Horse Thief Detective or Odd Fellows' organization dies and it is uecessary for the society to publish to the world how sorry it is over his demise, through the
Review,
we desire that the sum of S3 accompany the resolutions. There is just as much sense in the publication of such stuff as there is in the old, traditional habit ot wearing habilaments of mourning, aud not one bit of sense in either at least that is our opinion, whatever may be that of some other person. The absolute necessity of advertising grief and.sorrow has never been apparent to us.
IOWA EVICTION.
A process of eviction similar to the process used iu Ireland some respects is going on in the upper part of the Des Moines river valley of Iowa. Residents who have lived upon tracts of land for 130 or more years lind that by some hook or crook of speculators that the land which they supposed was theirs is taken fioin them, aud they must move from it or they will be driven off by the officers. The consequence is that there is much excitement and much had blood aroused, contests between the settlers and the officers have taken place and others are threatened. If there is any time when a citizen will fight it is when Ins home is to be taken from him, and that there should be much trouble to arise iu Iowa over these evictions is not a subiect of surprise.

terms caused by the reduction in interest, except by lowering wages paid and consequently impairing the efliciency of the schools.
If tho bill increasing the limit of local tax levy to ?.! cents oil the 15IOO had passed it would have neutralized the effects of the reduction of interest. Kepresentalives from the counties most affected were very anxious to secure the passage of the tax bill, but u: the hurry of (lie closing hours of the session Ihey failed to secure action on it
At the municipal elections in Chicago, St.Lotiis, Leavenworth and other western cities tho democracy carried the day and elected most of the officers. It is hoped that these elections indicate a coming change all over the country in tho views of the people nnd that it will gain in strength and result in the complete overthrow of the republican party.
was stated in the intelligence from Wash-' mgton City last week, that the policy of the present administration is not to simply remove Democratic post-masters on account of offensive partisanship and that the majority of them would remain until their commissions had expired. If true, it is a deadeuer upon many of the aspirants for p. in's. in this county, and before many months the dozen aspirants will be heard uttering deop imprecations against tho mugwumpian policy of the Harrison administration. Such a policy will not suit sta'wart republicans as it did not suit stalwart democrats during Cleveland's administration.
The workmen in the De Paw glass factory at New Albany have lately been compelled to submit to a reduction iu wages. The proprietors of this establishment are, we believe, God and morality republicans, aud the good Utiles prophesied to the laboring men if Benny was elected are here. The men working there can see them—the good times—and the proprietors can also. Protection is getting iu its work, and the good times are now being realized.

Blackstoue were living lie might gain several points about law from Judge Woods, the Federal court at Indianapolis, about which he knew apparently nothiug. He would learn how to have two different opinions upon the same subject, aud just when and how to give them separately so as to seemingly not conflict. In fact old Blackstoue knew nothiug about law compared to some specimens we have ruuuing the courts to-day.
Republican farmers iu particular, should, according to republican authority have no reason to demur at the action of the binder twiue

Houston, chairman of the republican state central committee, has been rewarded. Harrison has appointed him U. S. treasurer. Thread is protected 51 per cent., and these spinners were told last fall that if Harrison was elected and this protection was maintained, thenwages would not beuisturbed. The Now York Tribune, in announcing tho reduction sajs, "uo cause is assigned for it." The uctiins ought to demand tho cause—ought to insist upon knowing why their wages are cut down when the blessed 17 per cent, tariff is in no danger.

A KiiW persons from this locality are, it is slated, getting ready to start to Oklahoma territory, the new country which will be opened to settlement on and after the 22nd. There is no necessity for being in haste to get there. '1 he new comers will stiller scores of difficulties that tliev now little dream of. Prices of everything will be enormously high, the most desperate characters of the west will be* found congregated there, iiuil the country for a tiino will be any thing but pleasant to the now comer. 1111 Ohio legislature defeated the attempt recently made to ailopt the Australian system of holdiftg elections, and tho old law in that stale remains in force. Dudley, the "blocks of five" originator, has probably never livod iu that state.
And now another unconstitutional bill passed at the last legislature has been discovered. It is known as the loan bill, by winch the state desired to borrow some money. Wo look for some judge to yet decide that it is unconstitutional in Indiana for a citizen to change shirts any oftener than once every week.
Oklitlioiiiii.
There is a great deal of unnecessary excitement about the opening of the Oklahoma country to settlers. The writer has heard several in this town in the last few days talk as though they were going to that country to get land.
It is commendable in any man to try to get land ou which to make a home for himself, hut there are other locations where he would stand a much better chance to get good land than in Oklahoma, because tho territory is too small to supply the already waiting claimants.
There are only 1,800,000 acres, which is equal to only 2,S12).£ sections in the entire laud grant, and two sections, or one eighteenth, of every congressional township is reserved for school lands.
Each claimant is allowed 160 acres, which equals four claims to the section, aud if it is as the newspapers report, there are more than enough claimants there already to take up the land, and probably by April 22 there will be 50,000 people ready to enter the territory. With these facts before us it is evident that a strug g!e for possession of tho land will be the mev' itable result, .aid that four out of five must fail to get anything but disappointment, which is liable to end in riot and blood-shed, because most of the meu composing the frontier eh ment of society are a reckless, dare-devil type of men who will not hesitate to do anything to accomplish their purpose. They are very leal otis of and are especially severe on new comers from the East, whom they denominate "tender feet."
Our advice to those who desire to go to that country is to wait a while until tho excitement dies out, for the time will come when the boomers will bo sorely pressed financially and will be not only willing but anxious to sell out at almost any price, because tho reaction will always come sooner or later: therefore bide your time or go to a inoro gonial clime, for there is good land to be bad in other localitie
The writer lias been that country and knows what he is talking about.
