The contestants from this county for the W. C. T. U. silver medal are Miss Louie Brown and Claude Travis.

The Journal says Chas. M. Travis was selected Department Commander G. A. R. on the 3rd ballot. This is a good selection.

The funeral of Ewing Sidener occurred on Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. C. Barnhill. Interment at the Masonic cemetery.

The store of T. M. Campbell, at Darlington, came near being destroyed by lire Thursday. The lire broke out in the coal house. The fire company responded quickly and soon confined t'.ie llames. Loss, $150.

George Moody, of Danville, 111., cooked and ate a rat-terrier dog this week. He boasted of it and said ho had eaten several dogs, and considered their meat much sweeter than deer. It's all a matter of taste.

When it comes to sweetness an editor can enjoy it as well as human beings and the maple sugar and tally presented by Miss Lizzie Bible, which was made at R. B. Snyder's camp is as fine as could be made.

Willie Whitney, a 13-year-old boy, was takeu from a freight car at Covington this week, almost starved. He said he had been iu the car five days and that his father, who lives at Haughville, had placed him in the car and Clost-d the door. The poor little fellow was taken care of by the good people of that place. The inhuman father should be hung.

A district convention of W. C. T. U. workers will be held in this city beginning the evening of Wednesday, March 20, aud ending the evening of the 21st. The district is composed of of ttie counties or Parke, Putnam, Fouutaiu and Mohtgomery, delegates will be present from all of them.

Mis. J. R. Nichols, State President, of Indianapolis, aud Miss Mary Hadley and Miss Lodie Reed, with other promiuent State workers are expected. The exercises will begin Wednesday evening at. the M. E. church, with what is known as the Domorest medal contest for a fine silver medal. The- contestants are chosen from each county and thoy may bo either lady or gentleniau. The contestants from Putnam are two young women of Depauw. (Contestants must bo over 15 aud under 21 years of age. Montgomery and Parke will each present a young man and women. Impartial judges will be chosen to determine the grade of each contestant.

Thursday, papers will be read and the business of the convention transacted, to which the general public and the ladies ol the county aud city are cordially invited to attend. All temperance organization, lodges of Good Templars ami Sabbath schools throughout the county are respectfully invited to send reuresentatiues.

A child of Tom Fishero's, of Covington, died Sunday and was buried at Alamo on Tuesday.

Mrs. Lizzie Slaley left Tuesday for Prescott Junction, Arizona, where she will join her husband.

Mrs. Otis Fruits, of Alamo, died last Saturday and was buried 011 Sunday, She was quite young, and her sad death is regretted by a host of friends.

The first installment of county and city taxes cau be paid until April 15, after which date all the taxes for the year will become delinquent if that installment is not paid.

The county commissioners contracted, Wednesday, with J. M. Bishop to build a barn for the jail on the vacant lot two squares of the jail, that belongs to the county consideration, $340.

Agent Watson has had a special policeman appointed for the Mouon depot to keep the boys who frequeut that place from jumping on and off trains, and it is to be hoped this move will save the boys fr.im so often risking their lives.

J. M. Haggard, postmaster at West Point, has forwarded his resignation to Postmaster General Wannainaker to take effect April 1st. Marcus Beer is suggested as a successor, Don't do this, democrats don't resign. Make them fire you and let the hungry horde fight for the offices. It is so much ir.nre fun.

A new orphau's home will probably be erected, or the old building considerably enlarged. The present building is taxed to its limit to accommodate the numbers already staying there. The last legislature, by a law passed, permits the expenditure of $5,000 in building, and this sum will 110 doubt be used.

Charles McKensey was arrested at Veedersburg, Wednesday, charged with bribing a voter at the last election at the Alamo polls. He gave bond this city with J. H. Burford and Will Clark as securities. The Journal says he has always been a democrat, and to those who know, dou't this sound funny''

A petition signed by 4! persons has been presented to the County Commissioners, asking for the location of a new highway in Scott township. It will commence on the southwest corner of section iti, township 17 north, range •1 west, aud runs south 011 the section line, 2', miles, to tho intersection of the road leading east from Ladoga to Parkersburg. It was ordered, and James Mack, James Hutchison and John Lane were appointed viewers.

Taylor Peterson, yras taken before Judge Snyder, Tuesday morning aud entering a plea of guilty of forging a name 011 a note. He was given a sentence of two years in the penitentiary. Taylor Peterson is a bright young man had a life full of promise and this fatal step which has ruined his life can only he assigned to one fault, and that fault is liquor.

The administrator of the estate of Wm. Gray, who was killed last fall l. the collision of two hand cars at the \andalia depot, has brought suit agaiust the company for $10,000 damages. It is charged that it was through neglect the collision occurred.

John Hutchings, a prominent citizen of this county, died Tuesday at his residence seven miles east of this city, the cause being complicated disease of the kidneys. He leaves a wife and several children. His children aro John Hutchings, of Rector, Ark.. Will Hutchiug of Wiluiont, Kan., Mrs. John Martin, of Kan., and Mrs. Louisa Hurd, Mrs. Thos. Button and Mrs. Clayton Kimler, of this county.

Deputy Marshal Brothers took Taylor Peterson to the peniteutiary Thursday. The prisoner felt his misfortune so great that he asked to be taken to the junction, to escape the gaze of the people. He asked a RIJVJKW man to speak kindly of him, and be said he would serve his sentence like a man. Taylor Peterson is not a criminal at heart. It is his love for strong drink that has caused Ins ruin and stained his good name.
